Medaglia d’Oro Leads Darley’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Darley in Lexington, Ky., has announced the advertised stud fees for its 2021 roster, led by top commercial sire Medaglia d'Oro at $150,000.

“These are trying times breeders are facing,” said Darley sales manager Darren Fox. “We gave great consideration to this when setting our fees to reflect the economic reality of today,” Fox continued.

“Breeders are attempting to navigate a sales environment that is both unpredictable and difficult,” Fox continued. “Subsequently, all but one of our stallions will see a decrease in stud fee from last year. We sincerely appreciate the past support from breeders, and we are looking forward to a better and brighter 2021.”

Medaglia d'Oro's fee will be set at $150,000 following another excellent year in 2020. He is currently the number one yearling sire in North America by both average and median and was represented by four million-dollar-plus offerings in 2020, the same number he was represented by in 2019. No stallion can match his 20 million-dollar yearlings since 2016.

With a total of 75 worldwide group or graded winners – 25 at the highest level – Medaglia d'Oro's propensity to consistently produce quality racehorses was further exemplified this year when his son Moretti won Saratoga's Birdstone Stakes, making him the all-time leading sire of black type winners at Saratoga with 20. His Grade 1 winner Higher Power is a contender for this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

First-crop sire phenomenon Nyquist will stand for a fee of $75,000 in 2021. His 10 juvenile winners to date include Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes winner Vequist and G1 Summer Stakes winner Gretzky the Great, both slated to run in the Breeders' Cup next month.

Two G1 winners in any crop is no small feat for any stallion, but two from a freshman crop puts Nyquist in rarified air. Not since Danzig in 1984 has a stallion had two Grade 1 winners so early in his career. This quick success was reflected at the yearling sales this year as prices for his yearlings included $635,000 (top colt for a second-crop sire), $510,000 (top-priced filly for a second-crop sire), and $500,000. He is the leader of his sire crop by yearling average and median two years running.

Progeny of Street Sense, with a 2021 stud fee set at $60,000, are once again excelling on the track. No stallion can top his four graded stakes-winning dirt colts this year: unbeaten Maxfield in the G3 Matt Winn, multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie in the G2 Triple Bend, juvenile TDN Rising Star Cazadero in the G3 Bashford Manor, and 3-year-old Shared Sense in the G3 Indiana Derby and G3 Oklahoma Derby.

Bernardini and Hard Spun will both stand for $35,000 next year. Bernardini's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile-bound son Art Collector joined the list of the nation's best sophomore colts with a win in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes, while daughters Lady Kate and Micheline have both recorded Grade 1 placings with the latter under consideration for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. No stallion under $125,000 can top his 22 graded winners on dirt since 2015 and he has more Grade 1 winners, graded winners and black type winners as a broodmare sire than any 17-year-old stallion in history.

Hard Spun's current top runners include Grade 1 winner Hard Not to Love, Saratoga Oaks winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Antoinette, plus 10-length Churchill debut winner and TDN Rising Star Beautiful Memories. No stallion can top his three Grade 1-winning 3-year-olds over the past two seasons.

Frosted, the record-breaking Met Mile winner, is priced at $25,000 for 2021. His nine juvenile winners to date include G1-placed TDN Rising Star Travel Column, TDN Rising Star Inject, Saratoga winner Restored Order, recent Belmont winners Likeable, Frost Me and Ten for Ten, and his latest winner, Inspector Frost, who won at Keeneland on Oct.18. He is the only freshman with multiple TDN Rising Stars and he's the only stallion in America with three juveniles to have run an 80+ Beyer this year.

Street Boss's current crop of 2-year-olds is one of the best-bred groups of his career. Only Into Mischief can boast more juvenile stakes horses than Street Boss this year. Another reflection of the quality of his 2018 crop can be seen in a $760,000 2-year-old at the sales. Street Boss's new fee will be $15,000.

Medaglia d'Oro's Group 1-winning son Astern will shuttle from Australia again and his first foals will be 2-year-olds of 2021. His fee will be $7,500 next year. His first crop of Northern Hemisphere yearlings were received very well in 2020 with prices that included $100,000, $90,000 and $87,000.

Lifetime statistics for Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman ($7,500) continue to position him as one of the best-priced stallions in Kentucky. His 17 percent career black type horses from starters is among the best in the business – no stallion under $50,000 can do better, and his eight black type winners and 16 black type horses in 2020 are the best of any stallion $25,000 and under.

Enticed, another son of Medaglia d'Oro who has made a strong start at stud, will stand for a fee of $7,500. His first season in 2020 reflected firm support from breeders who sent him 148 mares.

Stallion Fee
Medaglia d'Oro $150,000
Nyquist $75,000
Street Sense $60,000
Bernardini $35,000
Hard Spun $35,000
Frosted $25,000
Street Boss $15,000
Astern $7,500
Enticed $7,500
Midshipman $7,500

Full Sister To Rachel Alexandra To Debut Friday At Gulfstream Park

Gladys, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, is scheduled to make her debut Friday at Gulfstream Park.

The 2-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is slated to break from the outside post position in a field of 10 2-year-old fillies assembled for a $65,000 six-furlong maiden special weight race carded as Race 6.

Gladys was named by owner/breeder Dede McGehee, a graduate of the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, in memory of her late maternal grandmother, Gladys Atkinson Houser.

Gladys is the eighth foal out of Lotta Kim, a daughter of Roar whose first foal was Rachel Alexandra, who was named 2009 Horse of the Year after winning five Grade 1 races in a row, including the Preakness, Haskell and Woodward against males and the Kentucky Oaks.

The Kentucky-bred Gladys, who is trained by Kelsey Danner, has been prepared for her debut with a series of 10 breezes at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream Park's satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.

Angel Arroyo has the mount.

Medaglia d’Oro Half-Sis to Sergei Prokofiev to Shadwell

Hip 319, a Medaglia ‘Oro half-sister to Group 3 winner Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy), rolled to the top of the leaderboard about midway through the second day of bidding at the Keeneland September sale after selling to Shadwell Farm for $1.6 million. The Apr. 27 foal was bred in Ontario and consigned to the sale by Anderson Farms and was produced by Orchard Beach (Tapit), a $200,000 graduate of the 2012 September sale, whose produce have now accounted for better than $4 million in turnover at this auction since 2017. Sergei Prokofiev was a $1.1-million acquisition by M.V. Magnier out of the 2017 September sale, while the mare’s foal of 2017, a Hard Spun filly named Turko Beach, made $950,000 in 2018. Early Warning (Air Force Blue) was purchased by David Redvers for $400,000 at this venue 12 months ago. On Monday it was announced that Sergei Prokofiev would stand at Whitsbury Manor Stud.

Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Estate Company, perennially among the leading buyers at the September sale, purchased a pair of fillies by Medaglia d’Oro during Monday’s second session of the auction. Shadwell’s Kentucky manager Rick Nichols warmed up with the $425,000 purchase of hip 231 and then refused to be denied when bidding $1.6 million to acquire a daughter of the Darley stallion out of Orchard Beach (Tapit) from Dave Anderson’s Anderson Farms consignment later in the session.
“She was a beautiful filly, extremely well bred and conformationally correct,” Nichols said after signing the ticket on hip 319. “It’s one of those you kind of got to have.”
Sheikh Hamdan’s operation purchased 18 yearlings for $11,070,000 at last year’s September sale and was the auction’s second leading buyer.
“[Sheikh Hamdan] told me this morning to try to concentrate on getting some really nice fillies,” Nichols said. “We send all of our really good fillies to England and he promises that he’s going to send them back, but he never does. So our broodmare band is starting to get a little old and we need to rejuvenate it a little bit. We are looking for a nice colt, but mainly our focus will be on some nice fillies.”
Asked if the Shadwell game plan was to buy fewer horses this September, Nichols said, “Yes. We are looking for quality not quantity.”

Anderson Farms Hits Another High Note With Orchard Beach

The Anderson Farms-bred mare Orchard Beach (Tapit) has been quite the blue hen for the operation, producing Dave Anderson’s first million-dollar sale in Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy). She provided the Canada native with a new high Monday when her yearling filly by Medaglia d’Oro (Hip 319) hammered for a $1.6-million to Shadwell Farm.

“It means everything,” Anderson said. “I am very emotional right now. I bred the mother and now I bred this filly. She is probably the most athletic filly that I’ve ever had on the farm. I came in here fairly confident, hoping everyone would feel the same way I do. I am just thrilled that Mr. Nichols bought her for Shadwell. I want to thank Mr. [Joe] Allen for being the underbidder on the filly. So many wonderful people I respect, came by to see the filly and bid her. It means a lot to a little guy from Canada.”

The Ontario-based Anderson Farms purchased Hip 319’s second dam Song and Danz (Unbridled’s Song) for $400,000 with Orchard Beach in utero. Orchard Beach was winless in two starts on the track, but has more than made up for it in the breeding shed. Her first foal, GSW Sergei Prokofiev, sold for $1.1-million to M.V. Magnier at the 2017 renewal of this auction and her second foal, a Hard Spun filly now named Turko Beach, brought $950,000 from Shawn Duggan. She is also responsible for a now-2-year-old colt named Early Warning (Air Force Blue), who sold for $400,000 last year.

“It has been a long time,” Anderson said of his increasing success. “We try hard. I don’t necessarily have the resources to buy the top stock, so I just do the best I can.”

As for this filly in particular, Anderson said, “From the day she was born she was meant to be a sale topper. Not only is she athletic, but she has unbelievable racehorse mind. She wants to do it. She dragged that showman around for three days and never turned a hair. It was amazing to watch. I could sit there for a year and watch that filly walk back and forth.”

Anderson Farms is also responsible for the likes of Canadian Horse of the Year and GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d’Oro) and one-eyed Grade I winner Hard Not to Love (Hard Spun).  @CDeBernardisTDN
