Cheveley Park Stud Releases 2023 Roster

Ulysses (Ire) anchors the Cheveley Park Stud roster in 2023 at £10,000. His progeny include G3 Ballysax S. scorer Piz Badile (Ire) who was also runner-up in the G1 Irish Derby, as well as second-crop colt Holloway Boy (GB), the winner of the Listed Chesham S. at Royal Ascot and third in the G1 Futurity Trophy later in the year.

Twilight Son (GB) will stand for £7,000, while Mayson (GB)'s fee has been set at £6,000. Also standing for Cheveley Park is Unfortunately (Ire), who is based at Springfield House Stud in Ireland. His fee is €3,500. All fees are payable Oct. 1, special live foal terms.

Bloodstock Manager and Head of Nominations Matthew Sigsworth said, “It has been pleasing to see our stallions' progeny have yet another solid year both on the track and in the sales ring. We have therefore decided to leave our fees unchanged for 2023.

“The regally bred Ulysses has continued to make an encouraging start with his first two crops of runners. Highlighted by the group winning and Classic-placed Piz Badile, along with the Royal Ascot 2-year-old stakes winner Holloway Boy,

who was group placed on no less than four other occasions, including at Group 1 level. He now has Classic aspirations and is being aimed at the G1 2000 Guineas in May.

“Once again, Mayson is one of the leading sires of sprinters in Europe, headed by the group winner and Group 1-placed Rohaan (Ire). We believe Mayson continues to be one of the most consistent and best value sprint stallions standing in Europe.

“Twilight Son has enjoyed another excellent year, with seven black- type horses, including the group winners Twilight Jet (Ire) and Twilight Spinner (GB), as well as the leading sprinter and Group 1-placed Twilight Calls (GB).

“Unfortunately has made a most promising start with a 44% winners to runners strike rate with his first crop 2-year-olds, and he will once again stand at Springfield House Stud in Ireland, with Reddy and Linda Coffey.

'We feel our roster offers outstanding value and quality and, as always, we invite breeders to contact us directly to discuss their mares' mating plans for 2023.”

Oxted to Be Examined After July Cup Third

Two-time Group 1 winner and Saturday's G1 Darley July Cup third Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) will undergo a thorough examination by a veterinarian prior to racing again, according to trainer Roger Teal. Last year's July Cup hero, who also bagged the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot on June 15, veered right across the course during the running of the Newmarket sprint on Saturday.

“He seems absolutely fine, but we're going to have him checked out because we don't know why he hung across the track,” said Teal. “We'll have the vet look at him and see if there's anything untoward. He's never hung across the track like that before, so we'll monitor him over the next few days and see if anything comes to light.”

The Sept. 4 G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock is a possible next port of call for the two-time Group 1 winner, all being well after the veterinary exams.

“We're sort of running out of options now, so the Sprint Cup at Haydock would be his next target if all is well,” added Teal.

Another July Cup also-ran, the dual group winner Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}), could take his chances in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. The 3-year-old gelding ran 10th in the July Cup after a trio of wins including the Wokingham S. at the Royal meeting.

“He could go for the Maurice de Gheest,” said trainer David Evans. “There might not be so many runners and not as good a field as in the July Cup. That was probably the best sprint race of the season.”

Rohaan to Be Supplemented to July Cup

Dual group winner Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}), who won the Wokingham S. at Royal Ascot when last seen on June 19, will be supplemented on Monday for the G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on July 10. The gelding took the G3 Pavilion S. in April, before being purchased privately by Chris Kiely Racing Ltd. and James Tomkins. He then saluted in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock on May 22. In the latter, the David Evans trainee defeated Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}), who was first past the post in the G1 Commonwealth Cup S., but demoted to second by the stewards for interference.

“We didn't expect him to perform as he has in his last two runs and we didn't want to take on the older horses, but now with the figures he produced at Ascot, we haven't a choice now,” said Kiely, who is also a professional gambler. “We have to go and take them on. We're looking like we might get the ground we need. We probably wouldn't run him if there was firm in the ground description.

“The horse is in the form of his life, he takes his racing incredibly well. It's a race we'll never get another stab at and it's the chance of a Group 1.

“The horse is on an upward curve and I think we go there with an incredible chance and if there was rain to come we'd go and be almost favourite. It's an incredibly hot race and it's nice to be part of it.

“If all goes well in the July Cup, we might go for the [G1] Maurice de Gheest four weeks later. He takes his races so well. While the iron is hot you have to strike, so we're going to supplement him and pray for rain.”
