TDN Rising Star Beauvatier Extends Perfect Streak To Three

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) was two-for-two heading into Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure and remained on a roll after notching a 1 1/4-length success in the seven-furlong test. He became the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire (by Shamardal) in a May 9 five-furlong newcomers' test at Chantilly and doubled his haul later that month, upped to six furlongs at Saint-Cloud, with a defeat of 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent G3 Prix du Bois victrix Ramatuelle (Justify) when last seen.

Beauvatier, now owned by Haras d'Etreham in partnership with Philippe Allaire, was steadied to track the leaders in third after a slick break in this black-type bow and was gathered together in readiness for his bid once turning for home. Angled outside for a clear run with 350 metres remaining, the 3-5 pick quickened in impressive fashion to seize control entering the final furlong and coasted to the line in the closing stages to easily withstand the late threat of Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for a career high.

“This horse has really a big engine and he didn't even have to extend himself to win,” claimed Barberot. “When Maxime [Guyon] switched him out, he settled the issue within two strides. My concern is that the horse lacks some strength and I would like to see him change physically, to grow and strengthen up. This is why I will give him a small break now and hope that it will do him some good. He will return in September for the [Sept. 3 G3] Prix La Rochette [at ParisLongchamp].”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 113th stakes winner.

Breizh Sky Comes Good In The Paul De Moussac

Finally getting his ideal conditions and ride, TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) had his head back in front in Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at ParisLongchamp. Dogged mainly by ill fortune since his success in Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure in July, the Alain Jathiere colour-bearer was reverting to seven furlongs following his creditable third in this venue's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains last month. Allowed to stride to the front from his disadvantageous wide draw by Maxime Guyon, the Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti-trained 5-1 shot kept finding to ward off his G3 Prix Djebel conqueror Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths.

Breizh Sky, who had gained his TDN Rising Star tag with an eight-length debut win over six furlongs at Saint-Cloud before following up in the Roland de Chambure, had looked on form to have levelled off when going down narrowly in the G3 Prix la Rochette and when third in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over this course and distance. Again missing out in the Djebel on his return also at this distance at Deauville in April, the feeling persisted that he was being continually found out by the lack of a strong pace to run at under hold-up tactics.

This reversion to front-running seemed to unlock his latent talent and Alessandro Botti is hoping he can use it as a stepping stone back to the big time. “He is such a good and brave horse and really deserved to win this,” he said. “After his good performance in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, my first idea was to go straight to the [G1] Prix Jean Prat but he was doing so well that I was tempted by this. We will go to the Jean Prat now and enjoy this victory.”

Pedigree Notes

Breizh Sky is out of Anna Danse (Fr) (Anabaa), a granddaughter of Danse Bretonne (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere)  who was responsible for the G3 Prix Gladiateur winner and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Varevees (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and was the second dam of last year's G1 Preis der Diana heroine Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}). Danse Bretonne is kin to the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc and G3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord winner and GI Man O'War S. runner-up and sire Kaldounevees (Fr). Anna Danse's unraced 2-year-old filly by Birchwood (Ire) is named Breizhy Girl (Fr), while she also has a yearling filly by Attendu (Fr) named Breizh Danse (Fr).

Above The Curve Makes All For Prix Corrida Triumph, Nashwa Eclipsed In Fourth

Last term's G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G2 Blandford S. heroine Above The Curve (American Pharoah–Fabulous {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) encountered stellar opposition in Sunday's G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud and halted a three-race losing streak with a pillar-to-post victory in the 10 1/2-furlong contest.

Coolmore and Westerberg's 'TDN Rising Star' was undone by Saint-Alary runner-up Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the reopposing Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) when third in October's G1 Prix de l'Opera before running seventh in both November's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and this month's G2 Mooresbridge S. on seasonal return last time.

The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and held sway at a comfortable pace. In command throughout, the 47-10 chance was shaken up when threatened at the top of the straight and stayed on relentlessly under a drive inside the final quarter-mile to hit the line strong with a two-length buffer from Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). German raider India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) kept on well to finish one length adrift third while 'TDN Risng Star' Nashwa, who held every chance turning for home, faded out of contention in the latter stages and finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

“I am delighted to win this race for Joseph O'Brien and in these famous silks too,” said Maxime Guyon. “We used to ride together and know each other very well indeed. He said that she is a very straightforward filly with a huge action and to go on if nobody wanted the lead. She travelled beautifully and quickened well. She had the race in the bag quite early.”

Hollie Doyle, reflecting on a satisfactory return to action for G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Nashwa, added, “She's a big, burly mare and I think she just got tired. She's grown a lot and has put on a lot of weight. She had a busy year last year and was coming back off her first proper break. She probably needed the run and I think she'll come on for it.”

Pedigree Notes
Above The Curve is the third of six reported foals and one of two scorers produced by an unraced sibling of eight black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). She is a full-sister to G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Weld Park S. third Thinking Of You and her dam Fabulous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bred to Justify last year, has the unraced 3-year-old filly Deadly Nightshade (Justify) and a 2-year-old filly and yearling filly by Justify to come. Descendants of the April-foaled bay's MGSW second dam Mariah's Storm (Rahy), herself kin to G1SP sire Panoramic (GB) (Rainbow Quest), also include MG1SW sires Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Classic heroines Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Marvellous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW distaffer Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and elite-level performers Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Coolmore (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

TDN Rising Star Algolia Underlines Her Class

Favoured at 9-10 for Tuesday's informative Prix Kizil Kourgan at Saint-Cloud, the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Algolia (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) read the script perfectly to double her career tally and add another string to Andre Fabre's Classic bow. Despite being only a conditions event, the mile contest featured another TDN Rising Star in Ecurie des Monceaux's Snowpark (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), the half-sister to the Arc and Prix du Jockey Club-winning luminary Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and the champion Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) from the Jean-Claude Rouget stable, and all eyes were on how they would shape up with Algolia with recent race experience having won by five lengths on Chantilly's Polytrack three weeks previously.

Settled in fourth early by Maxime Guyon with Snowpark just ahead, the homebred daughter of the G1 Grande Premio Diana heroine and GI Flower Bowl S.-placed Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}) moved ominously into contention two out and soon had total control. At the line, the chestnut was two lengths ahead of the impressive course winner Prija (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), with another 1 1/4 lengths back to Snowpark in third. Algolia, who holds an entry in the G1 Prix de Diane, is a granddaughter of the G1 Grande Premio Marciano de Aguiar Moreira heroine Linda Rafaela (Brz) (Bin Ajwaad {Ire}) and a half-sister to last year's Listed Prix Charles Laffitte scorer Babala (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) also related to the GII Edgewood S. winner New Year's Eve (Kitten's Joy).
