Chaldean One Of A Score Of Colts In Guineas At Latest Entry Stage

Despite losing Frankie Dettori once the gates flew in the G3 Greenham S. on Saturday, Juddmonte's Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) remains part of the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas field. After Tuesday's latest scratching stage, 20 colts are still entered in the first Classic of the British season on Saturday, May 6.

A winner of four of his six starts, the G1 Dewhurst S. hero is one of two in the one-mile race for Andrew Balding. Second in the Dewhurst, G2 Richmond S. scorer Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will attempt to turn the tables for Mrs. Fitri Hay and trainers Paul and Oliver Cole.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) remains in the race for Charlie Johnston, as do the Godolphin/Charlie Appleby pair of G2 Gimcrack S. winner Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf runner-up Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

The Coolmore partners and Aidan O'Brien field a quintet led by Group 1 scorers Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never). G3 Killavullan S. hero Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) is also signed on, as is G3 2000 Guineas Trial S. winner Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Third behind Auguste Rodin and Tuesday's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Blue Riband Trial hero Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) is one of three in the race for Karl Burke. Burke runner Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G3 Craven S. over the course-and-distance of the Guineas, will also take part. Group winners Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) hail from the stable of Roger Varian.

There is also still a chance of a royal runner, as the King and Queen Consort's two-for-two Slipofthepen (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) has also retained his entry for John and Thady Gosden.

In the fillies' equivalent on Sunday, May 7, 26 nominees have stood their ground, among them Group 1 winners Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), and Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) for trainers Ralph Beckett, Aidan O'Brien, and Dermot Weld, respectively.

Beckett has also entered G3 Fred Darling S. heroine Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Hugo Palmer trains the runner-up in Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Juddmonte's Juliet Siera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), a Group 3 winner, is also part of Beckett's Guineas challenge.

The first and second-place finishers from the G3 Nell Gwyn S. also have entries in Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) for Richard Hannon and Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby. Saeed bin Suroor's G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. heroine and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) has been entered. G2 May Hill S. heroine Polly Pott (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) for trainer Ben Pauling is also part of the fray.

O'Brien is double-fisted in the Guineas, as his G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. victress Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) defeated Kieran Cotter's Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by 2 1/2 lengths at Leopardstown earlier this month.

Guineas Targets Next For Mawj

Either the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas on May 7 or the French equivalent on May 14 are next for 'TDN Rising Star' Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), trainer Saeed bin Suroor revealed.

Two-for-two at Meydan after victories on Jan. 27 and Feb. 24, the royal blue silksbearer is pleasing bin Suroor since her latest effort.

Bin Suroor said, “She ran really well [on Feb. 24]. She won over six furlongs in England and she came back here over seven furlongs, the way she worked in the morning I thought she could stay the mile. It was worth a try and she was really impressive, she won it easily. She's a tiny filly but she has plenty of speed, she's by Exceed And Excel.”

The Godolphin filly broke her maiden at first asking, earning her 'Rising Star' moniker by 4 3/4 lengths at Newmarket on May 14, and was second in the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot behind subsequent GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) in June. She earned a group rosette herself with a half-length victory over future Group 1 winner Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. in July, but finished fourth in the G2 Lowther S. a month later. Her final 2022 appearance was a third to Lezoo and Meditate in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 24.

“There are options to run her in the French or the English Guineas, one of those will be the next target with her,” he said. “The way she's done it, she's definitely improved, she did it so well. She's grown a little bit out in Dubai and she's a better filly now. To run her in the Guineas is a bigger step, but we will have a chance.”

MAWJ (IRE) (f, 3, Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}), named a 'TDN Rising Star' after winning her May 14 Newmarket novice by 4 3/4 lengths, went on to take the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. two starts later and ended her juvenile season with a third in the G1 Cheveley Park S. in her fifth start. Perched out wide in an ideal stalking position, she tackled longtime leader Alseyoob (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at the quarter pole and appeared home free. However, fellow Godolphin colourbearer Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal) was rocketing home up the outside and cut the margin down to a short head at the line. “To be honest I got racing too far out and I wasn't really going too well at the 600 metres,” said winning jockey Pat Cosgrave. “She's an Exceed And Excel and she doesn't really want this ground. It was tight at the line but class got her through.” Although Epitome never placed, she has made a large impact on the breed, as she is already the dam of three stakes winners including the winner. Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) won at listed level in England and was also placed in a pair of Group 3s there, while her fourth foal was recently crowned Eclipse Champion Turf Male Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the GI Breeders' Cup Mile and GI Woodbine Mile S. to go along with his Classic scorein the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. Exceed And Excel’s Mawj Survives Enquiry In The Duchess Of Cambridge

Godolphin's homebred 2-year-old distaffer Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}) exhibited an impressive array of gears when earning 'TDN Rising Star' status by daylight in her May 14 debut over six furlongs at Newmarket's Rowley Mile venue and followed up with a second in Royal Ascot's June 17 G3 Albany S. in her only other start last time. Lining up as a 4-1 chance for Friday's bet365-sponsored G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at HQ's July course, the G1 Moyglare Stud S. nominee bounced back in style, and survived a stewards' enquiry, to claim a first black-type triumph in the six-furlong test. Positioned on the lead after a slick getaway, she was bustled along when threatened on both sides at the foot of the hill and kept on strongly, despite a leftward drift, in the closing stages to deny the hitherto unbeaten Listed Empress S. victrix Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) by a half length for a career high.

“The way she won the race is exciting and now we're looking at the [G1] Cheveley Park,” revealed trainer Saeed bin Suroor, who notched his second win, and first since 1997, in the contest. “She's a tiny filly, but she obviously has class. I remember when she won first time out, off the back of one piece of work, because she was light and she won well. She was behind a good filly at [Royal] Ascot and now winning this is a good result for her. I hope she grows and if she does it would be great. I'll take her to Dubai to find nice races for her in the winter, but her next target is the Cheveley Park and she will have a break now. Seven furlongs will be better for her at the end of the season.”

Winning rider Ray Dawson incurred a three-day suspension for careless riding in the closing stages and added, “Obviously there was interference, I was unaware where Frankie [Dettori on Lezoo] was until probably the last furlong and it was a little bit late then. I straightened my filly up and she was always going to stay in front. We kept the race, but it's mandatory that you're going to get between two and four days. I got three which is fair enough. I watched the video of the head-on and I did let her drift across and I've got to be punished for that. I am over the moon for this filly and we got very excited when she won first time out at Newmarket. Ascot didn't work out the way we hoped and she ran a great race [in the Albany], but we bumped into a very good horse on the day. She jumped and was very professional today. She wanted to please me the whole way and wanted to get her head in front. She was tough when she needed to be and she's got a lot of scope for the future. She's definitely heading towards a Group 1, she's ticking all the boxes and the [G1] Cheveley Park sounds about right at this moment.”

Ralph Beckett, trainer of runner-up Lezoo, commented, “I was very pleased with the run, she ran her race and left it all there. We just couldn't quite get it done. She was ready for it, from the way she was training, and I was happy to come back here after her Listed win here 13 days ago. Six furlongs on this [good-to-firm] ground appears her gig. Her dam was very much a soft-ground filly that won the [G3] Firth Of Clyde, so I wouldn't mind trying her on it.”

Mawj is the fifth of six foals and one of four scorers out of a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), G3 Prix Minerve victrix Synopsis (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Epic Similie (GB) (Lomitas {GB}), herself the dam of G2 July S. and G3 Sirenia S. runner-up Figure of Speech (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
