Maurice Colt Scales Falcon Stakes Heights

Danox, Inc.'s Danon McKinley (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) rallied to win the G3 Chunichi Sports Sho Falcon S. at Chukyo on Saturday. It was the first stakes victory for the son of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

Fourth last through the early going as Orchid Romance (Jpn) (Roger Barows {Jpn}) led, the 12-1 shot was able to relax behind a rapid pace, with the first 1000 metres reached in :57 flat. He gathered himself on the turn and fanned out into the centre of the course at the 400-metre mark. Making up ground with every stride, Danon McKinley ground past the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. third and won by a half-length. It was two lengths back to Sonshi (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who had enjoyed a stalking trip for much of this contest.

First in both a newcomer affair at Hanshin in September and in a Kyoto allowance in November, Danon McKinley was eighth to Jantar Mantar (Jpn) (Palace Malice) in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. a month later. Wheeled back in the Jan. 27 Listed Crocus S., he improved to fifth over this trip in Tokyo.

Pedigree Notes

Danon McKinley is the 26th stakes winner worldwide (18th group) for Shadai Stallion Station's Maurice, who also shuttles to Arrowfield Stud in Australia. The 13-year-old son of Screen Hero (Jpn) was Japanese Horse of the Year, Champion Sprinter and Champion Miler in Japan in 2015. His quintet of top-level winners include Australian three-time Group 1 winner Hitotsu (Aus), while Jack D'Or (Jpn) won the G1 Osaka Hai, Mazu claimed the G1 Doomben 10,000 back in Oz, Geraldina (Jpn) struck in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and Pixie Knight (Jpn) prevailed in the G1 Sprinters S.

2012 G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen left five Galileo (Ire) foals in Ireland with a record of four winners from four runners and three stakes horses. The best of these was Shale (Ire), who won the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and Berkeley Square (Ire), who was third in the G2 Futurity S. Acquired privately by Japanese interests, Homecoming Queen foaled the 4-year-old winner Irish Pearl (Jpn) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}). Next is the ¥220,000,000 JRHA Select yearling and Falcon S. hero, who has a juvenile half-sister by Kizuna (Jpn) and a yearling half-brother by Epiphaneia (Jpn). In 2023, Homecoming Queen–a half-sister to Group 1 winners Dylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill) and Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge)–visited Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn).

Quartet of Deep Impact Yearlings Anchor JRHA Select Sale Catalogue

The catalogue is now online for the 2021 JRHA Select Sale, which features four yearlings from the last crop of Deep Impact (Jpn) who died in July of 2019. Held at the Northern Horse Park near New Chitose Airport, the yearling session has 248 lots set to go through the ring on July 12, while there are 241 weanlings slated to sell on July 13.

Kicking off the yearling portion of the sale is a Deep Impact colt who will be offered as lot 1 and is out of the GII Black Eyed Susan S. heroine Go Maggie Go (Ghostzapper). There is also a Deep Impact filly out of GI Beverly D S. heroine Watsdachances (Ire) (Diamond Green {Fr}) and another filly by the late Shadai sire who is a daughter of the winning Jewel Maker (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Rounding out the foursome is another colt, a son of MG1SW Sweep Tosho (Jpn) (End Sweep), a winner of the G1 Takarazuka Kinen.

Naturally the sire power extends far beyond the four by Deep Impact, with a yearling colt out of G1 Golden Slipper S. heroine She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}) by Heart's Cry (Jpn) just one of the high class lots on offer. Heart's Cry's yearling colt out of G1 French 1000 Guineas winner Elusive Wave (Ire) (Elusive City) will also sell. Maurice (Jpn), whose progeny have been excelling this spring, is represented by a son of G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Necklace (GB) (Darshaan {GB}). Among the blue blooded yearling by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) is a daughter of GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. winner Hot Cha Cha (Cactus Ridge), as well as a son of Finest City (City Zip), who captured the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

One of the choicest foals in the catalogue is a son of Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) out of MG1SW Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}), who saluted in the G1 ATC Sires' Produce S. Down Under. A Kizuna (Jpn) filly, a daughter of G1 Irish Oaks heroine Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), will sell earlier in the foal session. Juddmonte's Frankel (GB) is represented by a son of GI Las Virgenes S. victress Callback (Street Sense), and there is also a colt by Triple Crown winner Justify out of MGISW Caledonia Road (Quality Road), successful in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

In 2020, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the yearling portion saw 229 sold of 249 offered (92%) for a gross of ¥10,428,000,000 (US$95,703,618/£67,742,999/€78,399,969). A brown colt (lot 114) by Deep Impact topped the sale at ¥510,000,000 (US$4,766,356/£3,313,198/€3,834,218). The average was ¥45,537,118 (US$417,984/£295,903/€342,353) and the median was ¥31,000,000 (US$284,548/£201,440/€233,068).

For the 2020 foal session, 203 foals sold from 226 through the ring (90%). The aggregate was ¥8,333,000,000 (US$76,486,200/£54,156,140/€62,649,703). Heart's Cry (Jpn)'s son (lot 365) of Hilda's Passion (Canadian Frontier) brought top dollar at the foal session when knocked down for ¥380,000,000 (US$3,551,402/£2,469,643/€2,856,986). The average was ¥41,049,261 (US$376,822/£266,781/€308,634) and the median was ¥29,000,000 (US$266,213/£188,436/€218,040).

Maurice Filly Lands Hochi Hai Fillies’ Revue

The G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas is on Apr. 11, and Shigeru Pink Ruby (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) punched her ticket for that Classic affair with a neck victory in the Hochi Hai Fillies' Revue over 1400 metres on Sunday.

Sent off at 13-1, the chestnut perched in a tracking sixth as Paul Neyron (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) carried the field into the single bend. She faced a wall of horses to get through turning into the home straight, but she burst in between horses late and nailed new leader Yoka Yoka (Jpn) (Squirtly Squirt) narrowly on the line. Minnie Isle (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) rounded out the trifecta another length behind. Favoured Opal Moon (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}) was dead last for much of the race, but made up some ground late on to take ninth.

A Hanshin debut winner over 1400 metres, Shigeru Pink Ruby was unplaced in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in December and Sunday was her 3-year-old bow.

Pedigree Notes

From the first crop of Maurice, Shigeru Pink Ruby is the second group winner for her young sire after G3 Nikkan Sports Sho Shinzan Kinen victor Pixie Knight (Jpn).

The winner's dam is unraced, but she has already left Shigeru Pink Dia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), who ran second in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas and third in the G1 Shuka Sho. Moonlight Bay also foaled 2-year-old colt Shigeru Rosemary (Jpn) (Silver State {Jpn}) and a yearling filly by Daiwa Major (Jpn). The daughter of Group 3 winner Moonlight Dance (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) was covered by Kizuna (Jpn) last spring. Moonlight Dance is a half-sister to G1 Irish Derby hero Grey Swallow (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}).

Maurice Colts One-Two in Chukyo Contest

Pixie Knight (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) caused an upset in the G3 Nikkan Sports Sho Shinzan Kinen at Chukyo on Sunday. He led home an exacta for his sire, former Japanese Horse of the Year Maurice (Jpn), 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Rooks Nest (Jpn), who was 3/4 to the good of Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}). Favoured Kukuna (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) reported home fourth, another half-length back.

The 12-1 shot surged immediately to the head of affairs and raced with ears pricked through splits of :23.40 for the quarter and :46.30 for the half-mile. Still full of run 600 metres from home, he was soon pressured by Bathrat Leon to his outside, but shifted to another gear and quickened away again 200 metres out. Under mainly hands and heels, Pixie Knight had built up enough of a cushion that Rooks Nest’s late rally fell short and he scored a shade handily, appearing to have plenty more to give if asked.

Off the mark at first asking in a Chukyo newcomer race on Sept. 26, the Silk Racing colourbearer was wheeled back going the same 1400-metre trip at Hanshin on Nov. 23 and ran third in the Shumeigiku Sho.

Pedigree Notes
Part of the first Northern Hemisphere crop of his sire, Japanese Horse of the Year Maurice, Pixie Knight is his Shadai-based sire’s initial black-type winner. Maurice was named the champion sprinter/miler in 2015 and scored six times at the highest level in Japan and Hong Kong. Maurice’s Infinite (Jpn) has also filled the runner-up position in the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup.

The third foal from his three-time winning dam, Pixie Knight has the older half-brother Salpa (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}), the winning 4-year-old half-sister Vidia (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), a juvenile half-brother by Black Tide (Jpn) and a yearling half-sibling by Mikki Isle (Jpn). Pixie Hollow visited the court of Kizuna (Jpn) last spring.

His third dam produced Japanese MSW & MGSP Danon Come On (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S), GSW Queen’s Barn (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}), SW Wild Soldier (Jpn) (Brocco), SP Lebaiserdel’ange (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) and the dam of MGSW & G1 Sprinters S. third Ukiyono Kaze (Jpn) (On Fire {Jpn}). GI Vanity H. heroine A Kiss For Luck (Reflected Glory) is his fourth dam, while GI La Brea S. heroine Alphabet Kisses (Alphabet Soup) is also in the extended family.
