Singh, Bell and Prior Appointed Associate Directors At Tattersalls

Harvey Bell, Matthew Prior and Jason Singh have been appointed as associate directors at Tattersalls, the sales company announced on Friday.

Bell will now operate as head of bloodstock while Prior will carry out the duties of head of sales and Singh as marketing manager.

Prior and Bell joined Tattersalls in the Bloodstock Sales department in 2012 with the latter now combining auctioneering and yearling inspections with overseeing sales administration, while Prior, in addition to yearling inspections and horse recruitment, oversees sales at Cheltenham and is on the Board of Tattersalls Ireland.

Originally joining the Tattersalls Marketing team in 2000, Singh manages the Tattersalls advertising and social media strategy while also overseeing key overseas markets including Australia and the Gulf region.

Commenting on the new appointments, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Appointing Harvey Bell, Matthew Prior and Jason Singh as associate directors reflects not only their respective contributions to Tattersalls over many years, but also the esteem in which they are held both within the company and by our many vendors and purchasers. Between them they have amassed a wealth of experience showing a commitment to Tattersalls and the wider thoroughbred industry and we look forward to seeing them continue to expand their roles within the company.”

Call Her Now on Top at Tattersalls Cheltenham

Five lots made six figures at the Tattersalls Cheltenham May Sale, with the top price of £240,000 paid for Call Her Now (Ire) (Presenting {GB}) by Rahinston Stud.

Sold as lot 8, the 4-year-old filly was a debut winner of a mares maiden point-to-point in her only start to date. The Monbeg Stables-consigned bay is out of a half-sister to MG1SW hurdler Denman (Ire) (Presenting {GB}).

Highflyer Bloodstock snapped up the geldings City Chief (Ire) (Soldier of Fortune {Ire}) (lot 45)-from Ballyboy Stables and a winner in one start–and Closcedi Farm's Timeforatune (GB) (Yorgunnabeluck) (lot 24), an 11-length scorer at Ffos Las, for £210,000 and £175,000, respectively.

Rounding out the top five lots was winning gelding Pimlico Point (Ire) (Flemensfirth) (lot 26) who was knocked down for £160,000 to Kerry Lee and the placed Knowsley Road (Ire) (lot 47), another Flemensfirth gelding, that went for £135,000 to the duo of Tom Malone/Paul Nicholls. The pair were offered by Milestone Stables.

The Tattersalls Cheltenham May Sale grossed £2,923,000 for 53 lots sold and averaged £55,151. The median was £45,000 and the clearance rate was a sparkling 95%.

“The Cheltenham May Sale brings to a close what has been a challenging season for the point-to-point sector on a high note,” Tattersalls Cheltenham Head of Sales Matthew Prior said. “The handlers have continued to show great resilience in adapting to a disrupted racing and sales calendar as a result of the pandemic and it has been hugely satisfying to see their efforts rewarded at our recent sales held here in Park Paddocks, Newmarket.

“The hallmark of the Spring sales season has been the sustained strength and depth at every level, as witnessed by the exceptional clearance rates of 93% or more at our last three sales. To have sold the two highest priced point-to-pointers at public auction this May underlines the confidence purchasers have in the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales regardless of the location. This year has been spectacular for Tattersalls Cheltenham graduates as highlighted by the nine winners at the recent Cheltenham Festival and we look forward to our sales returning to Cheltenham in the not too distant future.”

Lot 225, a colt consigned by Norris Bloodstock, the first crop from Arlington Million winner Mondialiste attracted interest from a number of parties but it was Aidan O'Ryan and Richard Fahey who came out on top securing the colt for 47,000 guineas (US$64,976).

Ringfort Stud also offered Lot 143 an El Kabeir half-sister to this year's Lowther Stakes winner and Ascot Yearling Sale graduate Miss Amulet. The filly caught the imagination of a number of bidders but it was Nick Bell who struck the winning bid of 45,000 guineas (US$62,211) on behalf of his father Michael.

Joe Foley was responsible for purchasing the fourth highest priced lot of the day when signing for Lot 93, a filly offered by Houghton Bloodstock by sire sensation Night of Thunder. At the conclusion of the sale, Matthew Prior, head of Tattersalls Ascot commented;

“We have witnessed robust trade throughout the day, and it is hugely pleasing to see gains made across the board. Vendors have noticeably increased the quality on offer and have been rewarded with both strong domestic and international participation. Our thanks go to Tattersalls for accommodating the relocated sale to its headquarters in Park Paddocks, along with Great British Racing International who have assisted in the promotion and airport transfers for those traveling from further afield. We look forward to charting the progress of this year's graduates from a sale that goes from strength to strength.”

West End Girl Tops Inaugural Tattersalls Online Ascot Sale

The Alan and Mike Spence-owned West End Girl topped the inaugural Tattersalls Ascot Online Sale when selling to Badgers Bloodstock who saw off interest from a number of bidders to secure the filly for £420,000 (US$527,184).

The daughter of Golden Horn, who is out of a half-sister to Reckless Abandon, won the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at two and was placed third on her latest start in the listed Oaks Trial at Lingfield on June 5. The Mark Johnston-trained 3-year-old is declared to run in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes on Tuesday at the Royal Meeting.

Lot 4, Igotatext, consigned by Archie Watson, made the perfect start to his career when making a winning debut at Lingfield just ten days ago. He caught the imagination of the Cool Silk Partnership who secured him for £165,000 (US$207,183). The son of Group 2 Gimcrack winner Ajaya now looks set to take his chance in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes on Saturday for new connections who are no stranger to Royal Ascot success.

Commenting on the first sale of its nature in the U.K. and Ireland Matthew Prior, head of Tattersalls Ascot Sales, said;

“A big team effort has gone into getting the inaugural Tattersalls Ascot Online Sale off the ground and we are very pleased with the results. There were a few technical glitches along the way which were quickly resolved and we will learn from today's sale, but overall it was a genuinely encouraging start for Tattersalls Online. We had wholehearted, enthusiastic support from the vendors as well as bidders from throughout the world, and we would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all who supported and participated in this new venture. In particular we wish all the connections the very best of luck with their purchases this week if taking up their engagements at Royal Ascot.”
