Turf Star Newspaperofrecord Sold, Retired; Will Be Bred To Galileo

Breeders' Cup winner Newspaperofrecord has been sold privately and retired, and she will be bred to all-world sire Galileo in 2021, trainer Chad Brown announced Wednesday on his Twitter account.

A 4-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega, Newspaperofrecord finished her career with five wins in 10 starts, earning $1,122,250 for owner Klaravich Stable.

Bred in Ireland by Times of Wigan Ltd., Newspaperofrecord was purchased by Klaravich Stable at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, and brought stateside, where she got off to a fast start on the racetrack. She went undefeated in three starts during her 2-year-old campaign, using the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes as a prep for her 6 3/4-length triumph as the heavy favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

She earned a pair of Grade 3 placings during her 3-year-old season, then came back strong in 2020, notching victories in the G3 Intercontinental Stakes and the G1 Just a Game Stakes. The latter half of her 4-year-old season featured in-the-money efforts in the G1 First Lady Stakes and G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes.

Newspaperofrecord is out of the British Group 3-winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Sunday Times, whose runners also include stakes winner Classical Times.

Galileo stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a private fee. The 22-year-old son of Sadler's Wells has become a cornerstone of international racing through his progeny on the racetrack, and when they go to the breeding shed themselves.

A European champion in his own right, Galileo's 2020 runners are led by Group 1 winners Magical, Circus Maximus, Peaceful, Search for a Song, Shale, Mogul, Love, and Serpentine.

Australian Star Black Caviar Booked To Written Tycoon For 2020 Breeding Season

Black Caviar, a three-time Australian Horse of the Year and one of the greatest turf sprinters to ever set foot on the course, will visit prominent Australian sire Written Tycoon for the 2020 Southern Hemisphere breeding season, bloodstock agent Suman Hedge announced Thursday on social media.

It will be the first paring between the two, with Black Caviar having previously produced foals from stallions including Exceed and Excel, Sebring, More Than Ready, Snitzel, and I Am Invincible.

Written Tycoon is an 18-year-old son of Iglesia who stands at Arrowfield Stud for an advertised fee of AUS$77,000 (US$55,674). He joins the Arrowfield roster this year after previously residing at Woodside Park Stud.

On the track, Written Tycoon did his best work at age two, winning the Group 2 Slipper Trial Stakes. His 3-year-old campaign included runner-up efforts in the G3 San Domenico Stakes and the listed Satellite Stakes. In total Written Tycoon won two of 11 starts for AUS$289,325 ($209,189).

Though he started as a relatively unheralded stallion, Written Tycoon has steadily climbed to the upper echelon of Australia's sire ranks, spearheaded by 2016 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. Written Tycoon was Australia's leading freshman sire of the 2010-11 racing season, and he was the leading 2-year-old sire in 2015-16.

Other runners of note by Written Tycoon include Group 1 winners Tycoon Tara, Music Magnate, Despatch, Booker, and La Luna Rossa.

Black Caviar, a 13-year-old mare by Bel Esprit, was named Australia's Horse of the Year and champion sprinter each year from 2011 to 2013.

Undefeated in all 25 of her career starts, Black Caviar was a three-time winner of the Group 1 Lightning Stakes, and she was twice a winner of four other Group 1 races in her home country. However, her most famous effort arguably stemmed from her voyage to England for the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes during the Royal Ascot meeting, where she preserved her undefeated streak after a nail-biting finish.

Black Caviar's career so engulfed the imaginations of racing fans in Australia and around the world that she became the second horse in history to be named to Australia's Hall of Fame while still actively racing in 2013.

Black Caviar is still seeking her first breakout star as a broodmare, but her influence will soon spread as her first foals retire to the breeding shed, including her son Prince of Caviar, a Sebring horse who stands at Riverbank Farm in Australia.

Canadian Champion Holy Helena Confirmed In Foal To Quality Road

Holy Helena, a multiple Grade 2 winner and Canada's champion 3-year-old filly of 2017, has entered the Adena Springs broodmare band, and was confirmed in-foal on Wednesday to Quality Road.

The 6-year-old Ghostzapper mare was unraced in 2020, but was still in training through the end of May, turning in her final workout at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida on May 27.

Holy Helena retired with eight wins in 20 career starts for earnings of $1,330,018, racing as a homebred for Adena Springs' Ontario base, and for trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

Unraced at two, Holy Helena broke her maiden in her second career start at Belmont Park, and parlayed that into victories in two of the most prestigious races for Canadian-breds. First, she bested the country's top sophomore fillies in the Woodbine Oaks, then she became the 36th filly to win the Queen's Plate. She added a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby before the end of the season to clinch honors as Canada's champion 3-year-old filly in 2017.

Holy Helena made the leap onto the U.S. scene in the seasons to come as a turf runner, racking up two victories in the G3 The Very One Stakes to go along with wins in the G2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Belmont Park and the G2 Dance Smartly Stakes at Woodbine.

Quality Road, a Grade 1-winning son of Elusive Quality, stands at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $200,000.

The 14-year-old has emerged as one of North America's highest-ranking sires on the racetrack and in the auction ring, with notable foals including champions Abel Tasman and Caledonia Road, as well as Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner City of Light and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hootenanny.
