Breeding Right to Aclaim Headlines Thoroughbid Christmas Sale

Listed as Lot 1 next Wednesday, Thoroughbid's Christmas Sale will offer a breeding right to Aclaim (Ire)–sire of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Cachet (Ire)–as one of the highlights of the 32 strong mixed catalogue of horses in training, breeding and youngstock.

Also on offer will be Fletchers Dream (GB) (Advertise {GB}) as Lot 10, a son of Poet's Princess (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}), herself half-sister to the dam of GSW Raasel (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), who won his sole start over the Newcastle all-weather last Saturday for conditioner Craig Lidster. He hails from the female family of G1SW Sakhee's Secret (GB) (Sakhee) and MGSW Santa Monica (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).

“Our offer of risk-free consignment at what can be a tricky time of year for many has attracted a healthy catalogue of 32 nice prospects for both racing and breeding, with plenty of black-type and winners throughout,” said James Richardson, CEO of Thoroughbid. “To be hosting the sale of another breeding right, this time to Aclaim, is testament to the versatility of our platform and we're looking forward to another competitive bidding period next week.”

Bidding for the sale goes live on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 9am and will run until midday. The full catalogue can be viewed here.

Making Waves: Mastercraftsman Filly Feeling Valourous

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Romagna Mia in the Dowager S. at Keeneland last weekend.

Mia All Class In Dowager

Team Valor International's Romagna Mia (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) won the Dowager S. at Keeneland on Sunday (video). It was the GI Beverly D. S. third's second graded/group score, having taken the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio in 2022.

Bred by Cavendish Bloodstock, the Graham Motion trainee was a 3,000gns buy-back as a yearling, before selling for €29,000 to Valfredo Valiani at Arqana's 2-Year-Old Breeze-Up Sale. Racing in the colours of Scuderia Dell'Avvocato, her Italian career was highlighted by her Lydia Tesio victory, prior to selling for €500,000 to Juergen Albrecht out of the 2022 Arqana Vente d'Elevage. Her dam's latest foals are a yearling colt by Expert Eye (GB) and a weanling filly by Magna Grecia (Ire). This is the extended family of G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Blue Duster (Danzig), and her descendants include GI Man o'War S. hero Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}).

The late Coolmore sire Mastercraftsman has 13 winners from 29 runners in the U.S. (45%). Five of his six stakes winners in that jurisdiction have won at the graded level including dual Grade I winner A Raving Beauty (Ger) and GI Matriarch S. victress Off Limits (Ire).

Surf's Up For Invincible Spirit Filly

La Nora, LLC's Ocean Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) made her third start a winning one at Horseshoe Indianapolis earlier this week for trainer Ignacio Correas (video). Originally unplaced at Aqueduct for trainer Wesley Ward in the colours of Stonestreet Stables, the filly was bred by Peter Winkworth.

Originally a 480,000gns yearling when joining the Stonestreet fold at the Tattersalls October sale in 2021, the bay changed hands for $75,000 out of the Keeneland April Horses-of-Racing-Age Sale this spring. The first foal out of Sparkling Surf (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Ocean Spirit is followed by Kingman (GB) half-sister Ocean Mermaid (GB) who was second in the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies S. at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, as well as an Oasis Dream (GB) yearling half-sister and a weanling half-brother by Palace Pier (GB). Second dam Shimmering Surf (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) won the G3 Pinnacle S. and also foaled G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Kitesurf (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The Irish National Stud's Invincible Spirit has sired 27 winners from 63 runners (43%) in the U.S. Of his seven stakes winners there, three have earned a graded brass ring, among them GI Turf Classic S. winner Digital Age (Ire) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile victor Vale Of York (Ire).

Repeat Winner

Siena Farm, Michael Kisber, Peter Deutsch and The Elkstone Group's Queen Of The Mud (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) upped her record to two wins in three starts after taking a Keeneland allowance on Sunday (video). The Graham Motion trainee landed a Belmont affair in September.

Klaravich Stables' multiple graded winner Technical Analysis (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) put her mark on the Listed Athenia S. during the Belmont at the Big A meet on Friday for trainer Chad Brown (video). The Rabbah Bloodstock-bred mare, who has also placed twice at the highest level, was taking her sixth stakes and first since the Listed De La Rose S. in August.

Long Distance Cup Is An Option For Giavellotto As Melbourne Trip Off The Table

Scuderia La Tesa's Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), a winner of the G2 Yorkshire Cup S. in May, will not travel for the G1 Melbourne Cup in November, with connections considering the G2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot instead, trainer Marco Botti revealed.

“He's in good form and has come out of the race at York in fine shape, but we're not going to Australia,” said Botti. “There were a few niggling problems and it's not going to happen this year unfortunately.

“Hopefully next year if we still have him and everything is going well then we can think about it as the Melbourne Cup is a race the owners would love to go for, and the race and the track would suit him as he seems to go on left-handed tracks.”

Botti is on weather watch regarding the 4-year-old's bid on QIPCO British Champions Day, with softer conditions unlikely to suit Giavellotto. After his York triumph, he ran fifth in the G1 Goodwood Cup S. to Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in August and was most recently third in the G2 Lonsdale Cup S. back at York at the end of that month.

“We'll keep an eye on the weather as he will only go to Ascot if the ground is not too soft,” he added. “Good to soft is fine, but he wouldn't want to run on anything softer than that. If he doesn't go to Ascot we'll just put him away for the winter.

“We haven't discussed plans for next year with the owners yet. I wouldn't rule out going back to [the] Dubai World Cup night for the G2 Gold Cup, but let's see how he winters and how he is after a nice break.”

Mastercraftsman’s Coltrane In Tune In The Lonsdale

Mick and Janice Mariscotti's ultra-consistent 6-year-old gelding Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}–Promise Me {Ire}, by Montjeu {Ire}) settled for placings in this term's G1 Gold Cup and G1 Goodwood Cup and exacted revenge on Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) with a determined effort in Friday's G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.

Coltrane, a 14-length runner-up in this marathon contest last year, had risen through the staying ranks to notch victories in last term's G2 Doncaster Cup and this term's G3 Sagaro S. and raced in fourth through the early stages. Inching into third at halfway, the 11-4 second favourite made continued headway to wrest control from habitual frontrunner Quickthorn approaching the two pole and was driven out in the latter stages to withstand the late threat of Courage Mon Ami by 1 1/2 lengths in game fashion. Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) fared best of the remainder and stayed on to finish a half-length adrift in third.

“That was fully deserved, he's been incredibly consistent and he is adored by everyone,” commented Anna Lisa Balding. “Tom [Marquand] gave Quickthorn such a great ride at Goodwood and he fully deserved that, but it was Coltrane's turn today and he's done it in brilliant style. I'm thrilled to win another Group 2 for Mick and Janice [Mariscotti] as they have been incredibly patient. He had surgery two years ago and he hasn't looked back since, but that is why he doesn't go to Australia. He's like a pet, he's adorable and I think it will be Ascot [Champions Day] next as he ran so well in the [G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup] race last year.”

Stable companion Nate The Great was pulled up in the home straight and vanned off the track for treatment. “Hopefully Nate The Great will be okay,” Balding added. “They have put a compression boot on him and taken him back to the stables. The vets are there and they are doing what they can.”

Reflecting on the performance of Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami, Franke Dettori said, “He wasn't keen, but it took him a while to warm up and then he came good. The [Group 1] penalty and shorter trip made Coltrane a better horse than me. We didn't let Quickthorn go today and that made a big difference. It was the right result today, Coltrane and my horse first and second in the Gold Cup and first and second today. The [G1] Prix du Cadran over two-and-a-half [miles] would be tailor-made for him and I guess he'll come back for the Gold Cup next year without me.”
