Preakness Art Submissions Open

The Art of Racing, inaugurated last year as a partnership between 1/ST, the Maryland Jockey Club and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), today launched its 2023 program. This year, the call for entries has been expanded to artists nationwide, and beginning today, artists can submit their entries to www.preakness.com/the-art-of-racing. Submissions will be accepted through Mar. 10.

The art competition commemorates the second jewel of the Triple Crown Series and its impact on Baltimore, as artists are invited to create and submit original, two-dimensional visual art depicting the unique elements of Thoroughbred horse racing and the Preakness Stakes. Last year's program drew nearly 150 entries and included an open voting phase, during which the public was invited to visit the aforementioned site to cast their vote for their favorite work of art. This year's voting range will be from Mar. 13 to Mar. 27. The top 10 selections will be entered into the finalist category with the winning piece being selected by a panel of judges.

The winning artist of the second-annual competition will be awarded a $4,000 stipend and two tickets to Preakness 148 on May 20, 2023. In addition, their work will be reproduced on a curated collection of Preakness 148 merchandise that will be available for purchase online and onsite during Preakness weekend. Proceeds from merchandise sales will, once again, be directed to the Park Heights Renaissance, a non-profit organization pursuing employment opportunities and affordable housing for Park Heights residents.

“The artwork featured during last year's inaugural competition was exceptional,” said David Wilson, Chief Marketing Officer, 1/ST. “Artists shared their interpretations of the thrill of victory, the heartbreak of defeat and the vibrant crowds of Thoroughbred horse racing fans coalescing each unforgettable year in the Preakness Stakes.”

Laurel Re-Gifts Stakes Program

Winter Storm Elliott is expected to bring gusty winds, arctic cold and threats of flash freezing to the Mid-Atlantic over the weekend. To prepare, the Maryland Jockey Club has postponed its Dec. 26 Christmastide Stakes Day program.

“Due to the weather conditions expected throughout the weekend, we decided to cancel our Monday program early and accommodate our fans as well as the horsemen and horsewomen who will be participating in this exceptional day of racing,” said Mike Rogers, Acting President of the Maryland Jockey Club.

The entire 11-race slate will shift to Friday, Dec. 30 with a post time of 11:25 a.m. Live racing is scheduled to resume Thursday, Dec. 29 with the 48-day fall meet finale set for Saturday, Dec. 31.

Featuring six $100,000 stakes, the Christmastide program includes, the Heft S. for 2-year-olds and Gin Talking S. for 2-year-old fillies at seven panels, each; 6 1/2-furlong Willa On the Move S. and 1 1/8 Carousel S. for older fillies and mares; and six furlong Dave's Friend S. and Robert T. Manfuso S. going 1 1/16 for 3-year-olds and up.

Mike Rogers Pledges One-Day Match Donation to TAA Dec. 10

As part of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)'s month-long Holiday Giving Campaign, Mike Rogers has pledged to match all donations up to $500 made to the TAA Dec. 10. The campaign commenced Nov. 29 and is scheduled to conclude New Year's Eve.

Those wishing to support the TAA, its 81 accredited organizations, and thousands of retired Thoroughbreds can donate through the TAA's website or text DONATE to 56651. During the Holiday Giving Campaign, TAA is also offering donors the benefit of sending digital holiday cards to colleagues, friends, and loved ones.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is doing great work and I'm happy to do my small part in helping their mission,” said 1/ST RACING Executive Vice President and Maryland Jockey Club Acting President and General Manager, Mike Rogers. “Our industry would be nothing without these horses, who all should have the opportunity to live long, happy lives after racing. Thank you, TAA, for providing an industry-united aftercare mechanism devoted to our retired equine athletes.”

Canter for a Cause Raises Over $20K for TAA

For the third year, 300 riders from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond walked, trotted, and cantered their horses across Pimlico Oct. 31 with proceeds to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). In total, the 2022 Canter for the Cause raised over $20,000 for the TAA–a nonprofit which provides accreditation and grants to Thoroughbred aftercare organizations dedicated to the retraining, retiring, and rehoming of off-track Thoroughbreds.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, this annual event also gives riders the opportunity to take their horses through the starting gate and get their picture taken in the winner's circle.

Maryland Jockey Club Vice President of Racing Development, Georganne Hale said, “Everybody who rode around the historic track had a smile on their face, riders loved getting their picture taken in the winner's circle, and all the proceeds went to an important cause for our industry–the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.”
