Pimlico Surface Examination on Target for Apr. 17-19

The Maryland Jockey Club has confirmed that maintenance work on the dirt surface at Pimlico Race Course will begin Easter Sunday, Apr. 17, with plans to reopen the track for training Wednesday, Apr. 20.

MJC Acting President and General Manager Mike Rogers said a favorable weather forecast will allow the project to proceed at the preferred time rather than the following week. The track maintenance crew each year has examined the Pimlico surface prior to the May race meet and last year repaired the base in specific areas.

Traditionally, there is no training on Easter Sunday at Pimlico and Laurel Park. Rogers and Track Superintendent Chris Bosley earlier said the project, which entails an examination of repairs made to the Pimlico surface last spring, would take about three days.

The Pimlico spring meet begins May 8 and concludes May 31.

Voting Open for the Art of Racing Preakness Art Contest

Voting is officially open for The Art of Racing, a unique art competition presented by 1/ST and the Maryland Jockey Club in partnership with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) to honor the GI Preakness S., Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, and its impact on Baltimore.

A total of 147 entries of original, two-dimensional visual art that depict the unique elements of Thoroughbred racing and the Preakness Stakes were submitted for the contest. The winning artist will receive a $4,000 stipend and their artwork will be reproduced and available for sale during the Preakness with proceeds benefitting Park Heights Renaissance.

The 147th Preakness for 3-year-olds is scheduled for Saturday, May 21 at legendary Pimlico Race Course.

The Preakness and MICA have an illustrious history dating back to the 1970s, when then-MICA professor Raoul Middleman led his classes in painting murals of Pimlico. The seven murals Middleman created with his students live in perpetuity behind the track's grandstand and provide an intimate look at a tradition defined by history and character.

Knicks Go Honored as Top Maryland-Bred of 2021

GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Knicks Go (Paynter) was honored as 2021 Maryland-bred Horse of the Year during the fifth annual Renaissance Awards held virtually throughout the week of Feb. 28. The awards, which are a collaborative effort between the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Jockey Club, were presented through the MHBA's social media accounts.

Also honored were champion 2-year-old male Joe (Declaration of War), champion 2-year-old filly Luna Belle (Great Notion), champion 3-year-old male Jaxon Traveler (Munnings), champion 3-year-old filly Street Lute (Street Magician), champion older female Hello Beautiful (Golden Lad), champion turf runner Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid), and champion sprinter Aloha West (Hard Spun).

The late Robert T. Manfuso and Katharine M. Voss, breeders of 2021 Maryland-bred champion sprinter Aloha West, were crowned the Maryland Breeders of the Year, while their mare Island Bound, dam of Aloha West, was named Maryland Broodmare of the Year, and Northview Stallion Station's Great Notion took home the title of Maryland Stallion of the Year for the sixth consecutive year.

Other award winners for 2021 include Hillwood Stable LLC, Maryland Owner of the Year; Brittany Russell, Maryland Trainer of the Year; Jevian Toledo, Maryland Jockey of the Year. Julio Garcia was honored as the Pimlico Backstretch Worker of the Year, while Antoinette Charles Orellana earned the title of Laurel Backstretch Employee of the Year.

Pimlico Spring Stakes Worth $3.8 Million

The Pimlico Spring Meet, highlighted by the GI Preakness S., will offer 16 stakes–10 graded–worth $3.8 million in purses.

The $1.5-million Preakness anchors a program of 10 stakes, six graded, worth $2.75 million May 20.

Leading the undercard stakes on Preakness Day is the $250,000 GII Dinner Party S. for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. To be run for the 121st time, the Dinner Party is Pimlico's oldest race and the eighth-oldest in the country, first run in 1870.

Other graded supporting stakes are the $200,000 GIII Chick Lang S. for 3-year-olds sprinting six furlongs, $150,000 GIII Gallorette S. for fillies and mares three and up going 1 1/16 miles on the grass, and the $150,000 GIII Maryland Sprint S. at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up.

The 98th running of the $250,000 GII Black-Eyed Susan S. will once again be in its traditional spot as the feature of the Preakness Eve card May 20. The Friday card boasts six stakes, four graded, worth $1.05 million in purses, including the $300,000 GIII Pimlico Special, $150,000 GIII Miss Preakness S. and $150,000 GIII Allaire du Pont S.

The Pimlico spring meet is scheduled to open May 12 and run through May 31.
