Maryland-Bred Fund Introduces New Breeder Incentives For 2022

As the New Year approaches, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association announced today that the Maryland-Bred Fund will implement additional incentives that have been approved by the Maryland Racing Commission.

In addition to increasing breeder and stallion bonuses on all stakes races in Maryland, there will be two new plans to incentivize and reward breeders of Maryland-sired horses:

Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, an additional 10 percent breeder bonus (for a total of 40 percent, with the existing 30 percent), to all Maryland-sired and Maryland-bred maiden winners in Maryland.
Beginning with Maryland-bred foals of 2023 (2-year-olds of 2025), there will be a tiered breeder bonus system. The proposed percentages for that system are 35 percent breeder bonus to Maryland-sired and Maryland-bred and 25 percent to Maryland-bred (or 40 percent more for Maryland-sired/Maryland-bred) paid for first, second, and third, on all overnight races.

Additionally, beginning on Jan. 1, 2022:

The bonus percentages for all stakes in Maryland (except Maryland Million Day) will be breeder 30 percent and Stallion 10 percent paid for first, second, third.

“The purpose of these latest programs is to incentivize mare owners to breed to Maryland stallions,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. “We have a great stallion roster already and some new stallions are coming to Maryland for the upcoming season. Our goal is, and will always be, to reward everyone who breeds, foals and races in Maryland.”

The Maryland Bred Fund will implement additional incentives that have been approved by the Maryland Racing Commission, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association announced Wednesday.

In addition to increasing breeder and stallion bonuses on all stakes races in Maryland, there will be two new plans to incentivize and reward breeders of Maryland-sired horses:

Horse Library & Education Center Part of the Maryland Horse Park

The Maryland Horse Library and Education Center was designated by the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) as the Educational and Cultural Center of the Maryland Horse Park System. The new, multi-faceted facility will honor the history and importance of Maryland's horse industry.

“Maryland is home to over 100,000 horses, more horses per square mile than any other state,” said Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. “With over 40 equine disciplines practiced right here in Maryland and premiere horse events held year-round, our state's equestrian industry is world-renowned. This center will teach Marylanders and visitors from around the world about the remarkable contributions of our horse industry.”

Construction of the 4,500-square-foot center is expected to begin in September and will be open to the public by spring 2022. The center will be located in the Maryland Horse Breeders Association's (MHBA's) building in historic Reisterstown, centrally located close to Pimlico Race Course, Sagamore Farm, and other popular equine destinations. Once completed, the facility will house over 1,000 equestrian books, a memorabilia area, versatile meeting rooms, a media center, interactive kiosks and rotating exhibits.

“This one-of-a-kind facility in Maryland will serve as a central learning and research hub for horse sports in the state,” said MHIB Chair Jim Steele. “It is our intention for the center to educate the public about the breadth of Maryland's horse industry and to motivate them to get involved. I want to thank all of the individuals who have been involved in making the center a reality, it is your hardwork and dedication that has made this all possible.”

Maryland Hall of Fame Inductees Selected

For the first time since the inaugural year in 2013, more than two horses will be inducted into a class of the Maryland-bred Thoroughbred Hall of Fame. Selected for the class of 2021 are national champions Conniver, Devil's Bag and J. O. Tobin, voted in by a committee of Maryland racing industry members coordinated by the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland Racing Media Association.

“With this newest class of Hall of Fame inductees, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and the Maryland Racing Media Association are proud to recognize Maryland-bred horses that have been successful in the sales ring and racing on the national and international stage,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association.

“These three newest members of the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame demonstrate the depth of the state's breeding program over the years,” said Maryland Racing Media Association president Frank Vespe. “All were top-class runners who were not just Maryland champions but also national champions while defeating the best in their divisions.”

All three horses will be celebrated during a ceremony between races at Timonium on Sunday, Aug. 29.
