Hurricane Lane Leads 18 St Leger Nominations

Classic winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Paris already this summer, will line up for Godolphin in the G1 Cazoo St Leger on Sept. 11, one of 18 colts and fillies left in the fall Classic. G1 Cazoo Derby hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who also races for Godolphin, will not take part, and instead target the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Richard Hannon's Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), one better than Hurricane Lane's third in the Derby and fifth in the Irish equivalent is also signed on. The progressive G3 Gordon S. winner Ottoman Emperor (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) for Johnny Murtagh and Martyn Meade's Irish Derby second Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also remain at the latest forfeit stage. One of two for Andrew Balding is G2 Great Voltigeur third Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Aidan O'Brien fields an octet at this point for the race, including Sir Lamorak (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), listed winner and G3 Gordon S. second Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and G2 Great Voltigeur runner-up The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

A pair of listed-winning fillies have also stood their ground in Roger Varian's Save A Forest (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Ralph Beckett's Yesyes (GB) (Camelot {GB}).

Murtagh said of Ottoman Emperor, “That is the plan so far–we've had no problems, touch wood. I've not been speaking much to the OTI people [owners] since after Goodwood-[but] the English St Leger is the next stop.

“That last run was good, and the form of that race stood up at York. I think he deserves his chance in the St Leger–whether he stays the mile and six is a question mark, but we'll have to pay to find out.”

King George Next For Lone Eagle

The July 24 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. will be the next race for G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), instead of the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris. The Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm runner saluted in the G3 Zetland S. at Newmarket last October and ran fourth in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 23. Back in the winner's circle after a four-length win in the Listed Cocked Hat S. on May 21, Lone Eagle made the running in the Irish Derby before being passed by Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the shadow of the post.

“He's going for the King George. Everything's been perfect since the Irish Derby,” said trainer Martyn Meade. “Obviously it's a huge ask going there. It was a toss-up of going there or to France, and we decided we'd stay on home territory and take on the big guns at Ascot.”

Galileo’s Lone Eagle Wins The Cocked Hat

Still entered in the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby, Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm's Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made every yard in Friday's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat S. at a rain-hit Goodwood to stay in blue riband contention. Always happy on the front under Silvestre de Sousa, the 3-1 second favourite who took last year's G3 Zetland S. had Godolphin's Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to deal with in the final two furlongs but pulled away to score by four lengths. Seemingly out of the Derby reckoning when only fourth on his return in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial over 10 furlongs Apr. 23, the homebred is still not certain to take part at Epsom according to trainer Martyn Meade. “Obviously we were a little bit disappointed at Sandown and after that we came here with a little bit of trepidation, especially with the strong wind up the straight,” he said. “He's a horse that only just does enough at home and you can't put him under pressure, so today we decided to try to make it a gallop because he is relentless and he has a big heart, so that when they come to him he finds more. He's in the Derby and the Irish Derby and the end game could be something like the St Leger, but we need to revisit. I would love to go for the big prizes, but I'm inclined to take small steps as it is a long season.”

The winner is the first foal out of the dam, who was listed-placed on two occasions in Britain before winning the Ladies Marathon and finishing third in the GIII Rood and Riddle Dowager S. in the States. A half to the listed scorer Chasing Stars (GB) (Observatory) and the G3 Chester Vase third Risk Taker (GB) (Rainbow Quest), she hails from the excellent Juddmonte family of Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Reams of Verse (Nureyev). Sent to Lope de Vega (Ire), she has produced two colts by that sire in 2019 and this year.

Group Winner Lone Eagle Returns at Sandown

Group 3 winner Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will aim to enhance his G1 Cazoo Derby chances with a start in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown Park on Apr. 23. Second at first asking at Sandown in August, he got off the mark later that month at Goodwood over a mile. He quickly added a Sept. 12 Doncaster handicap and the G3 Zetland S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in his juvenile swansong on Oct. 10.

Trainer Martyn Meade said, “The plan is to go to Sandown on Friday with Lone Eagle. He improved all the time last year and he did everything we asked of him. He is totally laidback at home. He is a horse that never shows anything at home but just gives his all on the racecourse.

“He coped with Sandown well first time out there when he was a bit unlucky, so hopefully he can go one better there this time.

“After the race on Friday it will tell us where we are and whether we need to work him on our Derby gallop at home but so far he is going the right way.

“I think he is pretty versatile ground-wise and I don't think he is ground dependent as far as I can ascertain, both from what we have seen at home or on the race track.”

Meade remained noncommittal on sending Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) to the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas after her second-place run in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. on Sunday.

“Statement showed she is good enough for that level on Sunday and Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) just got the first run on us a bit,” Meade said.

“I'm not sure about the 1000 Guineas yet as she had a hard race at Newbury. The 1000 Guineas is in just under a fortnight and I'm just going to see how she is over the next two or three days.

“She is in the race and if she is firing on all cylinders then we would go, but it might just come too quick and we might then go to the French Guineas instead as she does take a bit of minding.

“I do think she is top class but I don't want to back her up quick and end up leaving her season behind.”
