Adlerflug Filly Earns Rising Star Tag At Cologne

Sporting the famed Gestut Rottgen silks in Cologne's Preis vom Weidenpescher Park on Sunday, Naila (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) overpowered her peers to become the latest German TDN Rising Star. Sent off the 9-10 favourite for the 1850-metre maiden, the Markus Klug-trained chestnut broke well from the widest stall to track the leading duo throughout the early stages. Taking control approaching the two-furlong marker, she surged clear to win unchallenged by 10 lengths with Andrasch Starke easing down.

The winner is the last known foal out of the listed-winning dam Naomia (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who has produced the G3 Zukunftsrennen scorer Narella (Ire) (Reliable Man {GB}). She is a daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Nagoya (Ger) (Goofalik), who is also the second dam of Nepal (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}) who also captured that Milan Classic when it was staged as a group 2 in 2016.

Protectionist Colt Powers To Rising Stardom In Germany

Gestut Rottgen's homebred 2-year-old colt Aspirant (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}–Aussicht {Ger}, by Haafhd {GB}), who holds an engagement in Krefeld's Nov. 13 G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen, went postward as the 16-5 second choice for Sunday's one-mile Preis der Holschbach Immobilien Gruppe at Dusseldorf and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' after disposing of his rivals in impressive fashion. Aspirant was professional from the gate and broke well to gain a narrow advantage going into the first turn. Comfortable on the lead throughout this debut, he was nudged along at the top of the straight and powered clear under urging inside the final quarter mile to easily outclass Alpenjager (Ger) (Nutan {Ire}) by an impressive 3 1/2 lengths.

“I'm a little bit surprised that he won so easily,” trainer Markus Klug admitted to GaloppOnline after welcoming back the first of his two winners on the card. “Even though his siblings [Akribie and Ariolo] were good 2-year-olds, he is a late-foaled son of Protectionist and didn't come into training until very late. So, of course, we have to be tentative with him at first.”

Aspirant is the fifth foal and scorer produced by a winning daughter of G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis victrix Anna Thea (Ire) (Turfkonig {Ger}). The April-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Diana-Trial winner Akribie (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and last term's G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen runner-up Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}). Descendants of Anna Thea also include this term's G2 Derby Italiano hero and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin third Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}), G2 Union-Rennen victor Aspectus (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), stakes-winning G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Willie The Whipper (GB) (Whipper) and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) third Andrea (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}).

Guiliani’s Mountaha Outclasses Schwarzgold-Rennen Rivals

Gestut Schlenderhan's homebred 3-year-old filly Mountaha (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}–Montfleur {GB}, by Sadler's Wells) ran third to subsequent G3 Preis der Winterkonigin heroine Lizaid (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) when making her debut over one mile at Hannover last September and bested a pair of subsequent winners when breaking through over the same trip at Dortmund in her only other start the following month. Sent postward with confidence aplenty as the 21-10 favourite to make a winning comeback in Sunday's G3 Karin Baronin von Ullmann – Schwarzgold-Rennen at Cologne, she took the one-mile heat by storm and was mightily impressive in scorching to a six-length triumph. Steadied to track the leaders from off the pace in seventh after breaking in the front rank, Mountaha made eyecatching headway in the centre of the track to launch her challenge with 300 metres remaining and powered clear inside the final furlong to easily outclass French raider Chaussons Roses (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) by daylight for a career high.

Mountaha is not entered in the June 12 G2 German 1000 Guineas and will target Dusseldorf's Aug. 7 G1 Preis der Diana – German Oaks, for which she now shares 5-1 joint-favouritism with last month's G3 Dr Busch-Memorial victrix Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}). “She is something very special,” winning rider Andrasch Starke told GaloppOnline. “She had been working very well at home and looked an absolute picture in the parade ring beforehand. The [one-mile] trip isn't her ideal distance, but she did everything well and confirmed what we knew she could do.” Trainer Markus Klug, who registered a treble on the day's card, added, “Mares with a lot of class can also run to the front at the wrong distance. She looked very good today and, of course, her main goal is the [Preis der] Diana. We'll get her home, see how she is and we'll continue from there.” Baron Georg von Ullmann made a sporting gesture at the prize-giving ceremony for the contest sponsored by the Ullmann family. “She is a very good mare and the victory is something very special,” he said. “I passed the honorary prize on to the second-placed finisher, as I think that's how it should be.”

Mountaha, who becomes the second pattern-race winner for her sire (by Tertullian), is the 10th of 11 foals and one of seven scorers out of a half-sister to three stakes performers headed by GSW sires Mr. Mellon (Red Ransom) and Seeking the Best (Ire) (Seeking the Gold). The April-foaled homebred is kin to G1 Doomben Cup-winning sire Mawingo (Ger) (Tertullian) and a 2-year-old colt by Adlerflug (Ger). Her GIII Busher S.-winning second dam Mackie (Summer Squall) ran third in the GI Ashland S. and is a half-sister to MGISW sires Sea Hero (Polish Navy) and Hero's Honor (Northern Dancer).

Mylady A Group First For The Grey Gatsby at Krefeld

Gestut Karlshof's spayed 3-year-old filly Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}), who backed up an Aug. 22 debut win at Mulheim with a narrow score in Dusseldorf's Sept. 12 Listed Junioren-Preis, maintained her perfect record and went three-for-three in Sunday's G3 Dr Busch Memorial at Krefeld. The homebred grey, sent postward as the 11-5 favourite, was bustled along from the gates to remain in touch with the pack through the initial strides of this 8 1/2-furlong test. Angled wide for a clear passage in the straight, she quickened in impressive fashion to poach a decisive advantage approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly, despite rolling around in front, to hold the late surge of Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) by a neck, the pair four lengths clear of the remainder.

Mylady, who becomes the first pattern-race winner for her second-crop sire (by Mastercraftsman {Ire}), is the first of two foals produced by Minoris (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}), herself an unraced daughter of Monspa (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). Monspa, in turn, is kin to Listed Hampton Court S. victor and G2 Hardwicke S. third Persian Majesty (Ire) (Grand Lodge). Mylady's third dam Spa (GB) (Sadler's Wells) also produced Spasha (GB) (Shamardal), whose trio of stakes winners is headed by G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 Sprint Cup hero Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) and G2 Gran Criterium victor Royal Youmzain (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}). Mylady's fourth dam is G3 Lancashire Oaks victrix Sandy Island (GB) (Mill Reef), herself kin to runaway G1 Epsom Derby-winning sire Slip Anchor (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Sandy Island's descendants also include G1 Sisterna S. victor Summer Passage (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), with this being the dam line of legendary racemare and producer Schwarzgold (Ger) (Alchimist {Ger}). The winner's dam has 2-year-old colt by Counterattack (Aus) to come.
