Gold Cup Defence For Subjectivist as Sir Ron Priestley Retired

Dual Group 1 winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was injured in training in July, is aiming for a title defence of the G1 Gold Cup in June. The 4-year-old won the G1 Prix Royal-Oak, G2 Dubai Gold Cup and Gold Cup in succession before his plans were derailed for the season.

“Subjectivist is still here at Kingsley Park and there are no immediate plans for retirement,” said trainer Mark Johnston. “It is well publicised that an injury came to light soon after he won this year's Ascot Gold Cup and there is no doubt that that injury is career threatening but, in the absence of a suitable job at stud, we will make an attempt to bring him back for the Royal meeting next year.

“As the clock ticks by towards the 2022 covering season it looks likely that he will still be here in the New Year and returning to training.”

Regarding Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}–Reckoning {GB}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who won both the G2 Princess of Wales's S. and G2 Jockey Club S. this year besides running second in the 2019 G1 St. Leger and third in the 2021 G1 Goodwood Cup S., Johnston added, “His three-parts brother, Sir Ron Priestley, on the other hand, will definitely be retired. He is also currently still with us but it is hoped that he will shortly be departing for France where he will take up stud duties.”

Group 1 Winner Pyledrive To Prep For Hong Kong In Saturday’s All-Weather Churchill Stakes

Pyledriver is the headline act in a quality renewal of the Listed Betway Churchill Stakes at Lingfield Park on Saturday, Nov. 13, one of two Fast-Track Qualifiers on the card.

The popular 4-year-old reappears for William Muir & Chris Grassick having been sidelined since registering a first Group 1 success in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs in June, for which he must concede a 7lb penalty to his nine rivals.

Pyledriver is the 7/4 favorite with Betway as he prepares for a foray to Hong Kong next month, with the Marco Botti-trained Felix next in at 4/1. Felix was second in the G3 Betway Winter Derby over the course and distance in February prior to an excellent third behind Lord North in the G1 Dubai Turf at Meydan on Dubai World Cup Night.

David Loughnane is hoping last year's winner Dubai Warrior can rediscover his best form after finishing last on his debut for the stable in the G3 Diamond Stakes at Dundalk in September. Previously trained by John Gosden, Dubai Warrior captured this race impressively 12 months ago as well as the 2020 Betway Winter Derby.

Loughnane said: “Dubai Warrior disappointed us first time out at Dundalk. He has been in good form since and needs to take a step back in the right direction.

“We have gone for the eye shields. He has tried them on at home and they seem to have benefited him. We can probably ride him a bit differently – get him to relax – and hopefully he can finish off strongly.”

A classy line up also includes the Andrew Balding-trained Fox Tal. The five-year-old was fourth in the 2019 G1 Champion Stakes and ran one of his best races this year on the All-Weather when a close third in the G3 September Stakes at Kempton Park.

John & Thady Gosden have two contenders in Doncaster conditions race winner Harrovian and Kestenna, who steps up in trip after finishing fifth in the Listed Coral EBF Fleur De Lys Fillies' Stakes at the track last month.

Unexposed 3-year-old Cu Chulainn moves up in class after winning a Kempton Park novice race on his second start. Three-time All-Weather winner Via Serendipity, Dalanijujo and Quemonda complete the field.

The winner of the 10-furlong Betway Churchill Stakes will be guaranteed a start in the £200,000 Betway Easter Classic over the same distance at Newcastle on Finals Day.

Betway Churchill Stakes – Betway prices:
7/4 Pyledriver
4/1 Felix
5/1 Harrovian
15/2 Fox Tal
9/1 Via Serendipity
12/1 Cu Chulainn
16/1 Dubai Warrior, Kestenna
20/1 Dalanijujo
40/1 Quemondo
Each-way 1/5 1,2,3

A place on Finals Day is also up for grabs in the Listed Betway Golden Rose Stakes over six furlongs, a Fast-Track Qualifier for the £150,000 Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships.

All eyes will be on Mark Johnston's runner The Last Lion as he returns from a 1,876-day absence following fertility issues at stud. Now a 7-year-old, The Last Lion was last seen out in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket in 2016, when he defeated future champion sprinter Blue Point to give jockey Joe Fanning a first Group 1 victory.

A closely matched field of 12 also includes the last two winners of the Betway Golden Rose Stakes in Good Effort and Judicial, trained by Ismail Mohammed and Julie Camacho respectively.

Exalted Angel posted successive career-best performances over the course and distance last season, taking out the Listed Betway Kachy Stakes in February before going down by a head to Summerghand in the Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships on Finals Day.

Trainer Karl Burke said: “Exalted Angel is really well after a summer break and has been working nicely.

“He clearly handles the track well having put up to good performances at Lingfield last season – it's just a question of whether he is wound up enough to repeat those performances. I am not quite convinced, but he should run well all the same.

“We have saved him for another All-Weather campaign and the main aim is to get him qualified for Finals Day. The fact the final is now at Newcastle is not a problem because he has run well there before.”

There is an international element courtesy of Irish raider Harry's Bar, who is a three-time winner at Dundalk for Ado McGuinness, and Manjeer for French handler Carina Fey.

Misty Grey, a close third behind Exalted Angel in the Betway Kachy Stakes on his latest start, and lightly raced three-year-old Bahrain Pride are other contenders to note.

Betway Golden Rose Stakes – Betway prices:
7/2 Good Effort
6/1 Harry's Bar, Misty Grey
8/1 Bahrain Pride, Judicial
9/1 Exalted Angel
10/1 Fivethousandtoone
11/1 Manjeer, The Last Lion
12/1 Soldier's Minute
16/1 Jouska
20/1 Bimble
Each-way 1/5 1,2,3

Betway's Chad Yeomans said: “It looks a fascinating renewal of the Betway Churchill Stakes, with Group 1 winner Pyledriver the horse they all have to beat. He is the 7/4 favorite with us, which could look a big price in hindsight as he's clear on official ratings.

“The Betway Golden Rose Stakes is also fiercely competitive. Last year's winner Good Effort is solid at the head of the market at 7/2. It's also great to see Betway ambassador Andrew Balding sending Fivethousandtoone to the six-furlong contest. Andrew thought he was a Guineas horse at the start of the season, so it's interesting to see him at this level.”

Royal Patronage Confirmed For Vertem Futurity

Two-time group winner Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) will take part in the Oct. 23 G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. The Mark Johnston trainee won the G3 Acomb S. two starts back on Aug. 18 and defeated subsequent G3 Autumn S. victor Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25.

“We're heading to the Vertem Futurity,” said Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing. “Mark and Charlie [Johnston] are very happy with him–I've seen them at the sales–and the form is very much the hottest in the book, so we're going to give it our best.

“He got unbalanced going into the dip in the Royal Lodge, then he very much powered home but his form all the way ties in, and you can't take that away from the horse.”

The colt ran second to future G1 National S. and G1 Dewhurst S. winner Native Trail (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in just his second start, a Sandown maiden in June. He was off the mark at Epsom on July 29 prior to his group race heroics.

He added, “We're excited to see him take his chance at Doncaster, he very much deserves to run. If it went soft it wouldn't really worry us, it was good to soft at Epsom when he won and he powered through that. I don't think ground is an issue to him.

“He was second to Native Trail in a maiden but they were meeting at different points in their careers, ours has improved with every run significantly.”

Royal Patronage Gets BC Juvenile Turf Berth With Royal Lodge Victory At Newmarket

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Royal Patronage (FR) landed a thrilling Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket Race Course in England, securing his guaranteed start in the $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf as part of the “Win and You're In” international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California on Nov. 5-6.

A son of Wootton Bassett (GB) out of the Dalakhani (IRE) mare Shaloushka (IRE), Royal Patronage (FR) reeled in joint favorite Coroebus (IRE) in the shadows of the post to win the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes by a neck.

Trained by Mark Johnston and ridden by Jason Hart, Royal Patronage raced prominently in the early stages in the seven-horse field. Godolphin's Coroebus (IRE) took up the running at halfway and surged clear from the field under William Buick, before being run down and headed on the line by the eventual winner. The Donnacha O'Brien-trained Unconquerable (IRE), the 33-1 outsider of the field, finished 2 ½ lengths back in the third. Joint favorite Masekela (IRE) finished fourth.

Celebrating his fourth Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes victory, Johnston was delighted with the performance of his 2-year-old colt.

“I thought we were going to finish second even well inside the final furlong,” said Johnston. “At that stage, I was happy. He was running away from the chasing pack and I was thinking he's going to be a lovely horse for stepping up in trip next year. Jason [Hart] said the moment he hit the rising ground he was just gaining with every stride. He won well in the end.”

No immediate plans have been made for the exciting juvenile, but a tilt at next year's Group 1 Epsom Derby is under consideration.

Johnston added: “He looks like a Derby horse. It's great when you've got a horse who you're thinking might stay a mile and a half, but is showing so much speed early on as well. That's ideal.”

Royal Patronage (7/2) finished the mile in 1:38:06 over a course listed as good to firm. It was his third consecutive win after breaking his maiden in a novice stakes at Epsom Downs on July 29, and capturing the seven-furlong Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York Racecourse on Aug. 18 in his previous start.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Royal Patronage to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, which will be run at one mile over the turf course at Del Mar Thoroughbed Club in Del Mar, Calif. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.
