Unbeaten Magic At Midnight Bidding For Fifth Straight In Senator Ken Maddy Stakes

Unbeaten in four starts by a combined 25 1/2 lengths, trainer Mark Glatt's Magic At Midnight will try stakes competition for the first time as she squares off with Wesley Ward's multiple stakes winning Jo Jo Air in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes, which has attracted a field of seven fillies and mares 3 years old and up at 5 1/2 furlongs over the turf at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Named for the late Central Valley-based California state senator, the Maddy Stakes, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, was run as the Autumn Days Handicap prior to 1999.

MAGIC AT MIDNIGHT

Claimed for $30,000 out of a first-out 13-length romp on July 14 at Los Alamitos, this 4-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute has been nothing short of tremendous in three subsequent starts for Glatt, including a 2 3/4-length score in her only try on grass two starts back in a five-furlong turf allowance at Del Mar Aug. 14. Brilliantly fast, Magic At Midnight has never been headed in all four of her starts and has been favored in her last three, the most recent in which she overcame a stumble at the break en route to a one-length score in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance on Sept. 7. Out of the stakes placed Dixie Union mare Magical Blend, Magic At Midnight's value would be greatly enhanced should she win the G3 Maddy.

A two-time non-graded stakes winner, this 4-year-old filly by Scat Daddy is well traveled, evidenced by the fact her appearance in the Maddy will mark the ninth different track she's competed at in what will be her 13th start—all of them turf sprints. Most recently well beaten as the 4-5 favorite over a yielding course in a five-furlong stakes at Pimlico Oct. 1, Jo Jo Air rallied to take Del Mar's five-furlong Daiseycutter by a neck two starts back on July 24 under Flavien Prat, with whom she'll be reunited on Saturday. A $325,000 Keeneland September Yearling, Jo Jo Air, who is out of the Grand Slam mare Tessie Flip, will be competing in her first ever graded stakes. With an overall mark of 12-4-1-0, she has earnings of $201,474.

AN EDDIE SURPRISE

The leading money earner in the field, this Reddam Racing homebred 5-year-old mare by Square Eddie has been idle since rallying to win the 5 1/2-furlong turf Wishing Well Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 17 and looms dangerous over a course she adores. A California-bred, she's out of the High Demand mare Dani Reese and all five of her career wins have come over the Santa Anita lawn. With an overall mark of 26-5-9-4, An Eddie Surprise will be handled by regular rider Mario Gutierrez as she tries to pad her earnings of $341,952.

Sharp Samurai, Mo Forza Face Brazilian Royal Ship In City Of Hope Mile At Santa Anita

Trainer Mark Glatt's venerable 6-year-old gelding Sharp Samurai and Peter Miller's razor sharp 4-year-old colt Mo Forza head a field of seven 3-year-olds and up in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

A winner of the 2018 City of Hope Mile and most recently a solid second on dirt in the G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar Aug. 22, Sharp Samurai will also be cutting back in distance a quarter mile, while Mo Forza, a 4-year-old colt by Uncle Mo, comes off a stirring 4 1/4-length win on turf in the G2 Del Mar Mile Handicap Aug. 23.

Along with the top pair, Richard Mandella's promising Brazilian-bred Royal Ship and Val Brinkerhoff's hard knocking Restrainedvengence help make the City of Hope Mile a wide open affair on Saturday.

SHARP SAMURAI
Owner: Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal

Second, beaten three lengths by Maximum Security in the Pacific Classic, he returns to his preferred surface and retains the services of upstart Juan Hernandez. A huge second, beaten a half length by repeat winner United two starts back on turf in the mile and one eighth G2 Eddie Read Stakes July 26, Sharp Samurai has two seconds and a third from three starts this year and will hope to use the City of Hope Mile as a springboard to a berth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile Nov. 7 at Keeneland. A winner of five out of his nine starts over the Santa Anita lawn, Sharp Samurai is 8-2-2-2 at one mile on grass. With eight wins from 21 overall starts, he has earnings of $981,270 and will be seeking his fifth graded stakes victory.

MO FORZA

Idle since well beaten in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf at Gulfstream Park Jan. 25, Mo Forza came back ready for Miller on Aug. 23, earning a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 101 in taking the G2 Del Mar Handicap. With top jock Flavien Prat set to ride him back, Mo Forza will be bidding for his sixth win from 12 overall starts. Three for five at one mile on turf at Santa Anita, Mo Forza has won five out of his last six starts, including the G1 Hollywood Derby four starts back on Nov. 30. Bred in Kentucky and owned in-part by former trainer Barry Abrams' Bardy Farm, Mo Forza is out of the Unusual Heat mare Inflamed and is a four-time graded stakes winner with earnings of $614,460.

A Group 1 stakes winner two starts back in his native Brazil, this 4-year-old colt by Midshipman lagged far back early and closed with a rush to be third, beaten 4 1/4 lengths in the G2 Del Mar Mile Handicap Aug. 23 and he figures to improve by many in his second start with Mandella. With Mike Smith riding him back, Royal Ship seeks his sixth win from nine overall starts.

Second, beaten 4 1/4 lengths by Mo Forza two starts back in the Del Mar Mile Handicap, this hard hitting 5-year-old gelding by the Giant's Causeway stallion Hold Me Back comes off a game head victory in a $200,000 stakes going a mile and one eighth on dirt at Albuquerque Downs as the 4-5 favorite on Sept. 19. Second, beaten a head in last year's City of Hope Mile, Restrainedvengence is equally as effective on turf and dirt and will be ridden back by Ruben Fuentes. With eight wins from 25 starts and earnings of $625,222, he seeks his first graded stakes win in his 26^th career start.

Collusion Illusion Takes On C Z Rocket In Santa Anita Sprint Championship

Trainer Mark Glatt's red-hot Collusion Illusion, who seeks his fourth consecutive win and Peter Miller's C Z Rocket, in search of his fifth consecutive win photo, headline a solid field of five 3-year-olds and up in Sunday's Grade II, $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at six furlongs.

A winner of five out of six starts, Collusion Illusion was all heart in taking Del Mar's Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes by a nose on Aug. 1, while C Z Rocket, in his first graded stakes assignment, proved best by a half length in the Grade II Pat O'Brien going seven furlongs on Aug. 29.

The Santa Anita Sprint Championship is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, with the winner earning a fees-paid berth into the Grade I Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

COLLUSION ILLUSION

Unbeaten in three starts this year, this Florida-bred colt by Twirling Candy earned a career-best Beyer Speed figure of 93 in winning the Crosby and looms the horse to beat from the rail, from which he aired two starts back, taking the Grade III Lazaro Barrera Stakes here by 3 ¼ lengths on June 20. With the only blemish on his form coming in the mile and one sixteenth Grade I American Pharoah in September, 2019, Collusion Illusion is unbeaten in three starts at six furlongs and has won five out of his six career outs.

C Z ROCKET

A miracle $40,000 claim five starts back on April 30 at Oaklawn Park, this 6-year-old City Zip gelding has won all four of starts for Miller, at Churchill Downs, Keeneland and most recently, Del Mar, as he took the seven furlong Pat O'Brien as the even money favorite. Ridden by Flavien Prat in the Pat O'Brien, he'll be ridden for the first time by Luis Saez on Sunday and with a 97 Beyer in hand, should be very tough to beat in his 22nd career start.

One of the Southern California circuits most consistent sprinters, he made the lead a furlong from home but could not hold off C Z Rocket late when finishing second, beaten a half length in the Grade II Pat O'Brien. A winner of the seven furlong San Carlos Stakes four starts back on March 7, he's kept good company in five starts this year, winning one while three times second.

Del Mar Futurity Winner Dr. Schivel To Get ’90-Day Rest,’ Return As 3-Year-Old

Transferred to the barn of trainer Mark Glatt the day after his win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, Dr. Schivel is likely done racing for the year, reports the Daily Racing Form. The juvenile son of Violence will be turned out for three months before returning to training.

“We're going to give the horse a 90-day rest and bring him back as a 3-year-old,” Glatt told drf.com. “He does not have an injury or anything like of that nature, but he's had quite a few hard races, and we just thought if we want to have a 3-year-old next year we better back off and let him rest for a little bit.”

Bred in Kentucky by William A. Branch and Arnold R. Hill, Dr. Schivel was entered in the Keeneland November sale as a weanling but did not meet his reserve when bidding stopped at $37,000. His breeders retained the colt to race, and placed him with trainer Luis Mendez.

Dr. Schivel was third on debut, then second in his second start, and broke his maiden at third asking, defeating $1 million yearling Spielberg by 5 3/4 lengths. He was then sold privately to Tim Cohen's Rancho Temescal, his father Jed Cohen's Red Baron's Barn, and Dean Reeves, while co-breeder Branch retained an ownership interest.

The colt remained in Mendez' barn through his win in the Del Mar Futurity, and was transferred to Glatt the next day. Dr. Schivel goes to the bench with two wins from four starts and earnings of $197,000.
