Get Stormy Stays Sprinting at Keeneland

Gary Barber’s Got Stormy (Get Stormy) cuts even farther back to the shortest distance of her career in Friday’s GIII Buffalo Trace Franklin County S. over 5 1/2 turfy furlongs at Keeneland. Twice a Grade I winner going a mile last term and second behind fellow female and last Saturday’s GI First Lady S. heroine Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Mark Casse pupil failed to find her best form through the first half of 2020. She was fourth at 1-5 in the GIII Lambholm South Endeavour S. at Tampa in February, and was upset by a neck in Santa Anita’s GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita a month later. Faring no better when fourth in both Belmont’s June 3 GIII Beaugay S. and July 4 GIII Poker S., she stepped up when attempting to defend her title in Saratoga’s open GI Fourstardave H. Aug. 22 to be second, good for a 103 Beyer Speed Figure. Got Stormy paired up that number last time when successfully cutting back to a quirky 6 1/2 panels for the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint S. over soft ground Sept. 12, besting five returning rivals. Winning Envelope (More Than Ready) and Into Mystic (Into Mischief) completed the exacta and trifecta, respectively. New challengers include Wesley Ward trainee Stillwater Cove (Quality Road), who was second in last April’s Limestone Turf Sprint S. here and was last seen taking a course-and-distance allowance just under a year ago; and near millionaire Chalon (Dialed In), who scratched out of two spots at Pimlico last week for this and makes her turf debut in career start number 23.

Dual-Surface Colt War Of Will Likely To Make Final Career Start In Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Though War of Will has campaigned exclusively on the turf in 2020, including a victory in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile in July, the 4-year-old son of War Front will return to the dirt next month at Keeneland in what is likely to be his final career start.

According to bloodhorse.com, trainer Mark Casse is planning to enter Gary Barber's colt in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 7.

“It would be nice—he's already a grade 1 winner on the turf this year—to win another grade 1 on the dirt,” Casse told bloodhorse.com. “This will probably be his last start I would say before he retires to stud.”

War of Will will stand at Claiborne Farm for the 2021 season.

As a 3-year-old, War of Will won the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, the G2 Risen Star, and the G3 Lecomte, while also placing third in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby. He'd run on turf as a 2-year-old, finishing second in the G1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine and fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Most recently, War of Will finished third in the G1 Woodbine Mile. Overall, the colt's record stands at 5-1-3 from 17 starts with earnings of $1,871,803.

Spanish Loveaffair Tops Field Of 11 In Wednesday’s ‘Win And You’re In’ Jessamine Stakes

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Michael Hernon and Gary Barber's Spanish Loveaffair leads Wednesday's JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G2) for 2-year-old fillies on turf at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., live on NBCSN at 4 p.m. ET. The winner of the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine, which drew 11 starters, will earn an automatic berth into the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

Wednesday's telecast, produced in association with TVG, marks the 11th and final program in this year's “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In – presented by America's Best Racing” on NBC and NBCSN from some of North America's most iconic racetracks. The series leads to the 37th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland, scheduled for Nov. 6-7 and airing on NBC and NBCSN. The complete series TV schedule can be accessed here.

Reporting and commentary for the telecast will be provided from Keeneland by TVG's Todd Schrupp, Matt Bernier, Caton Bredar, Gabby Gaudet, Britney Eurton and Caleb Keller. Simon Bray will be providing commentary from home.

Spanish Loveaffair, a bay daughter of 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) winner Karakontie (JPN), has won both her starts at Gulfstream Park. Spanish Loveaffair is trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, who won this race in 2016 with La Coronel. After breaking her maiden at 1 mile by an eye-popping 11 lengths on July 23, Spanish Loveaffair returned on Aug. 29 to win the 1-mile Sharp Susan Stakes by 1 ¼ lengths as the 1-2 favorite. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount on Spanish Loveaffair and will break from post position 10.

Among the challengers to Spanish Loveaffair is the Brad Cox-trained Aunt Pearl (IRE). In her lone start on Sept. 1 at Churchill Downs, Aunt Pearl, a bay daughter of Lope de Vega (IRE), set the early pace in a 1-mile race and drew off by 5 lengths. Owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber and The Elkstone Group, Aunt Pearl will be ridden by Florent Geroux from post 7.

Another impressive debut winner is Don Alberto Stable's Ingrassia. Trained by Chad Brown, who has won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf three times, Ingrassia overcame a bumpy start in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight at Saratoga on Aug. 19 and steadily worked her way to the front to win by a nose. A daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, Ingrassia will be ridden by Javier Castellano from post 5.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen sends out Ben Rollins and Shelia Rollins' Beautiful Star, a daughter of two-time Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Tiznow, who was fifth in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies on Sept. 7. Adam Beschizza has the mount and will break from post position 4. Asmussen also will send out Kentucky Downs debut maiden winner Arm Candy for the partnership of Bradley Thoroughbreds, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron and Kurz Equine Investments. Ricardo Santana Jr. will ride from post position 6.

Not So Quiet’s Vice Regent Win Boosts Casse’s Big Day At Woodbine

Heste Sport's homebred 5-year-old Not So Quiet thundered past the favored graded stakes winner City Boy down the stretch to take the $150,000 Vice Regent Stakes featured on the rainy Sunday afternoon program at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

The Vice Regent, which was contested over one mile on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for its first 23 editions, moved to the inner turf this year and was run as a five-furlong sprint for Ontario-bred 3-year-olds and up.

Jockey Rafael Hernandez and trainer Mark Casse, one of the hottest combinations of the meet, teamed up for the win with the Silent Name–Mona Moon gelding, who returned $12.60 as the 5-1 fourth choice.

Alicia's Kid (Leo Salles) led briefly out of the gates from midfield, but insider Forester's Turn (Kazushi Kimura) dashed to the front with City Boy (David Moran) and those two battled head-to-head through an opening quarter-mile in :22.03. Meanwhile, Not So Quiet and Hernandez loomed the danger just to their outside in third.

City Boy eventually shook off Forester's Turn and drew clear down the stretch, but Not So Quiet tracked down the 5-2 favorite in the final stages to score by three-quarters of a length in :57.19 over firm turf. Nevaeh's Dream (Steve Bahen) closed with a fury from the backfield to edge out a determined Alicia's Kid for third prize in the 10-horse field.

Not So Quiet, who finished third in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier Stakes and fourth in the Shepperton this summer, earned the first stakes victory of his career and has now won two of five starts since his return to racing this year under the tutelage of Casse. The win was his fifth from 11 starts lifetime.

The Vice Regent was part of Casse's second four-win day of the meet. Hernandez ended the 11-race card with a triple.

Following Sunday's stakes race, Woodbine Entertainment held a moment of silence on the turf course to honour longtime horsewoman Martha Gonzalez, who passed away that morning at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. Woodbine's jockeys also paid tribute to the longtime assistant trainer and wife of Nick Gonzalez bywearing a black band on their right leg during the running of the first race. On behalf of the entire horse racing community, Woodbine Entertainment sends heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues on Thursday, featuring the 1 5/8-mile third leg of the Woodbine Turf Endurance Series as race five. Theregoesjojo will attempt to add to his series leading point total of 17 with Kazushi Kimura back aboard for trainer Michael De Paulo and owner Samotowka Stables. The field also includes Artistico, who ranks a close second in the standings with 15 points, along with English Illusion (four points), English Classic (three points) and a trio of newcomers. Post time for the first race is set for 2:15 p.m.
