Mating Plans: Marie Jones

In this edition of our ongoing mating plans series, we spoke with Marie Jones with additional notes from Katie Taylor and Doug Cauthen.

Marie Jones is carrying on the successful breeding program that she first started with her late husband Aaron. Their program is responsible for Grade I winners and champions including Ashado, Speightstown, Drosselmeyer and Mrs. McDougal, as well as the dam of Life is Good. Today, her high-end, boutique operation focuses on acquiring accomplished, well-bred mares and maintaining a portfolio of shares and breeding rights in proven commercial sires. Her current stallion portfolio includes Candy Ride (Arg), Violence, Not This Time, Medaglia d'Oro, Tapit and Into Mischief.

ENCHANTED GHOST (m, 7, Ghostzapper – Uniformly Yours, by Grand Slam) to be bred to Tapit

Enchanted Ghost is currently in foal to Into Mischief. She has a fabulous Tapit yearling filly who is one of the best, if not the best, foal of her crop. She will be going back to the same sire.

The Tapit-Ghostzapper direct cross has not been tried many times yet but has already produced GIIISW Bellavais. Tapit is also the sire of GIIISW Bandbox, who is out of a mare bred Grand Slam over Deputy Minister.

GLORY OF THE NILE (m, 3, Pioneerof the Nile – Gloryzapper, by Ghostzapper) to be bred to Violence

Glory of the Nile is a young, homebred mare. She had a fantastic Candy Ride filly this year who was the first foal to arrive at Taylor Made.

She will be booked back to Violence. Physically, we love this mating. Violence and another son of Medaglia d'Oro, Fast Anna, have sired stakes winners out of direct Empire Maker mares. Violence's stakes winner out of an Empire Maker mare is Violent Time, winner of the Ana T. S. at Gulfstream.

MAMMA KIMBO (m, 13, Discreet Cat – Bag Lady Jane, by Devil's Bag) to be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Mamma Kimbo is currently in foal to Not This Time. She will be bred to Medaglia d'Oro. It is a good mating physically and the El Prado-Forestry cross has produced 9% stakes winners (A Nick).

NOTED AND QUOTED (m, 8, The Factor – Silver Cub, by City Zip) to be bred to Uncle Mo

We love this mating physically because Uncle Mo can lend some size and scope to this mare. This is also a very current and fashionable mating mimicking the cross of current GSW Enola Gay (Uncle Mo). The second dam of Uncle Mo's GISW Mo Town is bred Carson City over Danzig and Uncle Mo is also the sire of GSW Moon Colony, who is out of a Carson City mare.

PRINCESS LA QUINTA (m, 8, Quality Road – Social Scene, by Tabasco Cat) to be bred to Into Mischief

Princess La Quinta is in foal to Tapit and she is booked to Into Mischief this year. Her first foal was an Into Mischief colt who sold well as a yearling, going to SF Bloodstock and into a good program on the track. We are hoping he finds success in his new program to support the 2023 foal out of this mare.

Streak of Luck and her 2022 Authentic colt | Taylor Made/Kelcey Loges

Gone West has been one of the key crosses for Into Mischief.  He has produced three Grade I winners from the cross including his Kentucky Derby hero Authentic. The other two are out of mares by Speightstown, who is bred on a similar Gone West-Storm Cat cross to this mare.

STREAK OF LUCK (m, 7, Old Fashioned – Valeria, by Elusive Quality) to be bred to Into Mischief

This mare foaled a feisty colt by Authentic last month. He was actually the first Authentic foal to hit the ground. She will be bred to Into Mischief this season.

SWEET KISSES (m, 5, Carpe Diem – True Kiss, by Is It True) to be bred to Charlatan

Sweet Kisses will be having a foal by Into Mischief this year and will then be bred to Charlatan. Charlatan is by Speighstown, who my husband and I bred years ago.

TAPASSION (m, 4, Tapit – Distorted Passion, by Distorted Humor) to be bred to Candy Ride (Arg)

Tapassion is in foal to Violence and is booked back to Candy Ride. This mare's yearling Candy Ride colt is lovely. He is one of the top foals in the crop, so we are hoping to go back on this cross and get a similar individual.

Candy Ride has two stakes winners from Tapit mares and he has three more stakes-placed runners on this exact cross, including GISP Dolder Grand.

WICKED LICK (m, 8, Maclean's Music – Here Music, by Dehere) to be bred to Not This Time

This mare will foal our second Authentic foal in 2022 and then will be visiting Not This time. This is a really good match physically. Not This Time can pretty this mare up. She has a great hip and hind leg and is good through her knees, but he can refine her head.

The Deputy Minister in her pedigree could be a plus as Not This Time is the sire of GISW Princess Noor and SW Next, who are out of daughters or granddaughters of Deputy Minister's son Awesome Again.

Let us know who you're breeding your mares to in 2022, and why. We will print a selection of your responses in TDN over the coming weeks. Please send details to: garyking@thetdn.com.

Robin Des Champs Mare Tops Tattersalls Ireland NH February Sale

Robin de Carlow (GB) (Robin des Champs {Fr}) (lot 298A), consigned by Closutton Stables, brought a sale-topping €70,000 from Simon Cox and Ballincurrig House during the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale on Tuesday. The 9-year-old has won at the Grade 3 level over both hurdles and fences and her granddam is the Grade 1 hurdle heroine Nas Na Riogh (Ire) (Presenting {GB}).

Ballincurrig House Stud's Perfect Ball (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) brought the next dearest amount, going for €62,000 to Kieran Shields. The yearling (lot 104) is out of the accomplished chaser/hurdler Princesse Kap (Fr) (Kapgarde {Fr}), who won three times in graded company.

Overall, the one-day sale saw 167 lots sold (60%) for a gross of €2,181,750. The average set a new record at €13,064 (+14%) and the median came in at €9,000 (-3%), the second-best median figure to date.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “We are delighted to kick off our first sale of 2022 with another record-breaking session, following last year's record-breaking renewals of the November NH Sale and the Derby Sale that returned the highest average and median on record for any store sale.

“The February NH Sale was cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19 and it was fantastic to stage a sale today under more 'normal' conditions and witness the fierce competition for choice foals between buyers from near and far. It is very pleasing to see the figures reach new highs, proving the February NH Sale is worth the wait.

We look forward to sponsoring the €150,000 Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) at the Dublin Racing Festival this coming weekend and catching up with many of our loyal vendors and purchasers ahead of the Derby Sale inspections commencing. Derby Sale graduates dominated at the 2021 Dublin Racing Festival with four Grade 1 winners and we cannot wait to cheer them on this weekend on what is sure to be a superb weekend of racing.”

Keeneland November Kicks Off Wednesday

The sales action moves across town Wednesday with bidding on the first session of Keeneland November starting at 1 p.m. The 10-day auction, which runs through Nov. 19, opens with a single-session Book 1 comprised of 229 mares and weanlings, five of which were late supplements. The sale has five books in total and the last half of the final day will be dedicated to 285 Horses of Racing Age.

“We have a lot of optimism,” said Cormac Breathnach, Keeneland's Director of Sales. “We had an electric atmosphere starting in Book 1 of September and continuing through the very last day. We are seeing through the credit application process, the things we are hearing on the grounds and people coming over now that borders are open that the demand that we saw in September is going to roll over with renewed interest in breeding stock and weanlings to pinhook.”

The September sale also boasted a stronger middle market than the industry had seen in recent years, which is likely to trickle down into this auction.

“I think the middle market is going to be extremely strong,” Claiborne's Walker Hancock said. “Based off the September sales, you could buy a mare for $20,000 or $30,000 and sell the foal for at least double that. We are really seeing an increase in the strength of that part of the market, which is good for everybody.”

The Breeders' Cup provided some timely updates to a few members of the KEENOV catalogue. Charmaine's Mia (The Factor) finished third in Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and is offered here as Hip 172. Taylor Made offers an Audible half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Juju's Warrior (Hip 1801) and H idden Brook has a Hard Spun half-brother (Hip 251) to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf third Haughty (Empire Maker).

“There is a lot of depth in the catalogue and mares in foal to exciting sires like Into Mischief,” Breathnach said. “Charmaine's Mia had a massive update on an already great page and [GISW] Paris Lights (Curlin) was a supplement, as was Jazz Tune (Johannesburg), dam of [GISW] Rattle N Roll (Connect).”

The November Sale is also known as a place too buy racehorses and they have reformatted that portion of the sale this year, placing it in a single session on the auction's final day.

“A new wrinkle we have for this year is we split the Horses of Racing Age section off onto the last day just to segregate it and we can have a later entry of supplement,” Breathnach said. “Even after scratches, we are expecting about 220 to get here middle of next week. We are hearing great feedback about that maneuver.”

Last year's Keeneland November was topped by Grade I winner Concrete Rose (Twirling Candy), who summoned $1.95 million from Larry Best's Oxo Equine. Best also purchased the second highest-priced offering, $1.9-million Indian Miss (Indian Charlie), who is the dam of champion Mitole (Eskendereya) and GISW Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow). She sold in foal to red-hot sire Into Mischief.

The Triple Crown-winning duo of Justify and American Pharoah were responsible for the most expensive weanlings at the 2020 renewal of KEENOV. A colt from the first crop of Justify brought $600,000 from Donato Lanni and an American Pharoah half-brother to MGISW Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) summoned the same price from Coolmore's M.V. Magnier.

At the 2020 auction, a total of 2,287 head sold, including post-sales, for a gross of $157,822,800. The average was $69,009 and the median was $25,000.

The Keeneland November Sale runs from Nov. 10 to Nov. 19 with the first session starting at 1 p.m. and the remaining nine sessions beginning at 10 a.m.

First ThoroughBid Sale Set For Sept. 12

New digital sale platform ThoroughBid will host its first sale on Sept. 12, the company announced on Thursday. Entries will be accepted for the platform through Friday, Sept. 3. ThoroughBid, which is currently a team sponsor in the William Hill Racing League, will kick off their sale at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12, with bidding ending for each lot at two-minute intervals beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, anti-snipe technology will be utilised, so that any bid made in the last minute will extend the auction by an additional two minutes.

Will Kinsey, co-founder of ThoroughBid, said, “The feedback we've had since launching last month has been very encouraging. ThoroughBid's sponsorship of the Racing League has helped raise awareness of what we are doing and it's been great to hear from a range of trainers, owners and breeders who are all interested in being involved in our first sale.

“The first sale falling in mid-September provides everyone with a good opportunity to buy and sell bloodstock. The flexibility of our product means we can setup future sales to suit the needs of the industry rather than sticking to traditional dates.”

Added Andrew Balding, who currently leads the UK Trainers' Championship and is one of Team ThoroughBid's trainers in the Racing League, “Selling horses is always a challenge and a new platform like ThoroughBid is very welcome.

“Not everybody needs to be waiting for the autumn sales and, obviously, income for our owners is very important if they are going to re-invest in time for the yearling sales.”
