Medal Count Pensioned From Stud Duty, Offered For Adoption At New Vocations

The 10-year-old Medal Count has been pensioned from stud duty and now appears on the website of Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited rehoming group New Vocations. The now-gelded son of Dynaformer earned just shy of half a million dollars on the racetrack, and was retired to stand at Spendthrift Farm in 2016. He has stood the past two seasons in Ohio at Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm.

Medal Count's oldest foals are 4-year-olds of 2021. His leading earner is the Arkansas-bred filly Hissy Missy, a winner in two of her 13 career starts for earnings of $175,532.

His advertisement on the New Vocations website reads: “Of a gold standard indeed, Medal Count is ready for his next career in his forever home! This well-traveled gelding earned nearly half a million dollars during his successful racing career, which included a Grade 3 stakes win and finishing in the money in several Grade 1 and Grade 2 stakes, including the Belmont Stakes (G1)! He stood at stud for several years before being gelded and entering our program to start his third career.

“One of Medal Count's first transitions in our program was figuring out turnout with a buddy! He's done well with this task and goes out during the day with our resident babysitter, Ranger. He loves to stretch his legs and enjoys some snacking, but he's overall quite relaxed and content outside.

“Around the barn, you can often find Medal Count sticking his head out of his stall, taking in all the action, or resting quietly. He can be shy and aloof at first, but he is happy to get one-on-one time when he gets individualized attention. Medal Count has spent some time getting used to new environments and building his confidence with us; he can be a bit of a cowardly lion at times!

“Under saddle, Medal Count is a bit nervous as he is figuring out his new job in the ring. We see loads of potential in him (check out his free lunge video!), but he is just working on relaxing under saddle at the moment. He will do best with an advanced rider who is confident and can guide Medal Count through the process as he learns to relax and get back into shape with his next career.”

Dominus Moves To Ohio’s Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm For 2022

Dominus, a multiple Grade 2 winner and veteran sire, will relocate to Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm in Polk, Ohio for the 2022 breeding season.

The 13-year-old son of Smart Strike previously stood at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he entered stud in 2013. He stood the 2021 season for an advertised fee of $5,000.

Dominus has sired six crops of racing age, with 112 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $7.3 million.

His most notable runner to date has been Straight Fire, a fast-starting juvenile who finished second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and third in the G1 FrontRunner Stakes. Straight Fire currently stands at stud in California.

Other runners of note by Dominus include Grade 2-placed Dominant Soul and Parsimony, and Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Chanel's Legacy.

Dominus won four of 10 starts during his own racing career, for earnings of $444,717. He won the G2 Dwyer Stakes as a 3-year-old, then he came back the following season to win the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap.

Bred in Virginia by Edward P. Evans, Dominus is out of the Grade 2-placed stakes-winning Lord At War mare Cuando. He is a half-brother to the multiple graded stakes producer Ask Me When, who is herself the dam of Grade 3-placed stakes winners Aristocratic and Up the Ante.

His extended family includes Kentucky Oaks winner Sun and Snow, Grade 1 winner Honey Ryder, and Grade 3 winners Cuando Puede and Hit It Rich.

Esplanande Named Ohio’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

Esplanande, who bested all challengers in her home state, and made an impact on the national stage was named 2020 Ohio Horse of the Year by the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners.

The Daredevil filly won three of four starts last year, winning on debut by 6 1/4 lengths at Belterra Park, then taking the Hoover Stakes at the same track with a front-running trip. Esplanande then shipped north to Thistledown for the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes, where she once again led at every point of call to win by 4 1/4 lengths.

The filly then tested deeper waters, shipping to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes in her final start of the season. She led through the early fractions, but ultimately finished second to future Eclipse Award winner Vequist.

Esplanande is owned by the partnership of Winstar Farm LLC, Blazing Meadows Farm LLC, and Michael Lewis. She was also bred by WinStar and Blazing Meadows, and she is trained by Tim Hamm.

The filly's ownership group was also named Ohio Owners of the Year, and Esplanande took home additional honors as Ohio's champion 2-year-old filly. Southern Silence, the dam of Esplanande was also named Ohio's Broodmare of the Year.

This year's winners were selected by a committee composed of Lawrence “Bill” Couch, Ed Vomacka, and Hugh Drexler – the racing secretaries at each Ohio Thoroughbred track – and Bob “Railbird” Roberts, the award-winning former turf writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
