Freddie, Martyn Meade Unite Under Manton Banner

Freddie Meade will join his father, Martyn, on the trainer's license under the umbrella of Manton Park Racing. Technique (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), entered to run in the G3 Cazoo Princess Elizabeth S. Derby Day, will be the first runner for the new training partnership. Freddie has served as an assistant to his father since 2014.

“I have grown up around horses and ridden from an early age. Training has always been the ultimate goal.” said Freddie. “I look forward to us being able to use traditional methods of training at Manton but appealing to a wider audience through utilizing modern techniques.”

The operation has undergone extensive renovations to both the yard and the gallops, which have been restored and fully irrigated. The father and son operation, which is aiming double the number of horses they have in training to fill the yard with a capacity for 100 horses, plan to be active at the yearling sales.

Commonwealth Cup Target for Method

Manton Park Racing’s Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is finished for the year and his long term goal is the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. at Royal Ascot next June. The chestnut won his debut at Doncaster this June and followed up with a listed score at Newbury on July 18. One of the leading fancies for the G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 26, his saddle slipped and the Martyn Meade trainee could only manage eighth. He returned on Saturday with a good second in the G3 Cornwallis S., also at HQ.

“We achieved what we wanted as what happened in the Middle Park was so frustrating,” said Freddie Meade, assistant to his father Martyn. “Having had no sort of race in the Middle Park, we were desperate to give him another race and let him enjoy himself. The ground conditions were not ideal and we didn’t know how he would handle them and the trip was a bit on the sharp side.

“The speedier horses maybe got away from him, but he finished like a train. He will go back up to six furlongs next year, so we will aim for the Commonwealth Cup and work back from there. We were happy to get a nice race into him and we can put him away for the winter now and start again, when maybe we will see some people back on track cheering him on.”

Middle Park Next for The Lir Jet

Group winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) will resurface in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 26. The Qatar Racing runner was originally slated for a return in the G2 Flyer Childers S. earlier this month, but was a non-runner that day. After winning the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot in June, the colt missed by only a short head in the G2 Prix Robert Papin at Chanitlly in mid-July and was third promoted to second in the Aug. 9 G1 Phoenix S.

“We just felt five furlongs on drying ground wouldn’t necessarily be his thing,” said conditioner Michael Bell. “We had the Middle Park as an alternative and, all being well, we’ll head to Newmarket.

“I’m sure it will be a very good race, but the horse is in very good form and good order, so we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully Newmarket will produce a nice, safe surface for everybody, which I’m sure they will.”

Also making his next start in the Middle Park is undefeated Listed Rose Bowl S. hero Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). The colt opened his account with a 4 1/4-length win in a Doncaster novice affair in June prior to his listed win on July 18 for owner Manton Park Racing.

“He’s doing his final bits of prep for that and, at the moment, it’s all systems go for Saturday,” said trainer Martyn Meade. “Everything is going to plan. He’s definitely on course for that. He’s fine and we’re hoping for a big run from him. It’s very exciting and we’d love to win that to make a miserable season a bit better.”
