Tahiyra Heads Field Of 20 For Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas

Last term's undefeated G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine and 'TDN Rising Star' Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) heads a confirmed cast of 20 after final declarations for Sunday's G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas were made Friday morning. The Dermot Weld trainee has been allocated gate 15 for the one-mile feature. She will be reopposed by Moyglare runner-up and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Aidan O'Brien's lone representative, who is drawn in stall eight. Godolphin's trio of contenders includes Saeed bin Suroor trainee and 'TDN Rising Star' Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who makes her European return coming back from a successful two-race stint in Dubai. She has been drawn on the wing and will emerge from stall 17. Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal), one of two representing Charlie Appleby, finished second to Mawj in January and has drawn stall 10. Appleby's other nominee Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who also ran second to Mawj in Dubai, comes back off a second in the track's G3 Nell Gwyn S. and is housed next door to Tahiyra in 14. Impressive Nell Gwyn winner Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) is widest of all in 20, while undefeated G3 Fred Darling S. victrix Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) gets the 13 gate.

Chaldean One Of A Score Of Colts In Guineas At Latest Entry Stage

Despite losing Frankie Dettori once the gates flew in the G3 Greenham S. on Saturday, Juddmonte's Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) remains part of the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas field. After Tuesday's latest scratching stage, 20 colts are still entered in the first Classic of the British season on Saturday, May 6.

A winner of four of his six starts, the G1 Dewhurst S. hero is one of two in the one-mile race for Andrew Balding. Second in the Dewhurst, G2 Richmond S. scorer Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will attempt to turn the tables for Mrs. Fitri Hay and trainers Paul and Oliver Cole.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) remains in the race for Charlie Johnston, as do the Godolphin/Charlie Appleby pair of G2 Gimcrack S. winner Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf runner-up Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

The Coolmore partners and Aidan O'Brien field a quintet led by Group 1 scorers Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never). G3 Killavullan S. hero Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) is also signed on, as is G3 2000 Guineas Trial S. winner Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Third behind Auguste Rodin and Tuesday's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Blue Riband Trial hero Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) is one of three in the race for Karl Burke. Burke runner Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G3 Craven S. over the course-and-distance of the Guineas, will also take part. Group winners Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) hail from the stable of Roger Varian.

There is also still a chance of a royal runner, as the King and Queen Consort's two-for-two Slipofthepen (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) has also retained his entry for John and Thady Gosden.

In the fillies' equivalent on Sunday, May 7, 26 nominees have stood their ground, among them Group 1 winners Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), and Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) for trainers Ralph Beckett, Aidan O'Brien, and Dermot Weld, respectively.

Beckett has also entered G3 Fred Darling S. heroine Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Hugo Palmer trains the runner-up in Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Juddmonte's Juliet Siera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), a Group 3 winner, is also part of Beckett's Guineas challenge.

The first and second-place finishers from the G3 Nell Gwyn S. also have entries in Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) for Richard Hannon and Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby. Saeed bin Suroor's G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. heroine and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) has been entered. G2 May Hill S. heroine Polly Pott (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) for trainer Ben Pauling is also part of the fray.

O'Brien is double-fisted in the Guineas, as his G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. victress Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) defeated Kieran Cotter's Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by 2 1/2 lengths at Leopardstown earlier this month.

Mammas Girl Annexes HQ’s Nell Gwyn In Taking Fashion

Wednesday's G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket was a wide-open affair beforehand, but became a full-on dress rehearsal for HQ's G1 1000 Guineas as Amo Racing's Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}–Mamma Morton {Ire}, by Elnadim) delivered a devastating turn of acceleration in the closing stages to pulverise her 14 rivals in the seven-furlong staging post. The 16-1 chance had previously debuted with an impressive two-length triumph over course and distance in October and was immediately quoted at odds as low as 6-1 for the Rowley Mile Classic in the wake of a 2 3/4-length tally here.

Mammas Girl was a shade tardy at the break and raced in rear, within range of the leaders, through the halfway point of this sophomore return and black-type bow. Last to come off the bridle after passing the quarter-mile marker, she was shaken up when angled into an open lane approaching the final furlong and went through a range of gears underneath the stands' side fence on the ascent to the line to win, going away, from G3 Prestige S. victrix Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for a perfect two-for-two record.

“She won very well here first time, but even so I was slightly worried about the [undulating] track,” admitted trainer Richard Hannon. “She missed the gate today, which I was surprised at, but she's won extremely well. She's very straightforward, she's worked very well all spring and I thought she'd run very well today. I must admit she's surprised me slightly in the way she's won and what I like about her is she's gone slightly under the radar, but we've always loved her at home. She looks a very good filly, but all my Guineas winners–Sky Lantern, Night Of Thunder and Billesdon Brook–were beaten in trials. Hopefully, she bucks the trend as she'll be coming back here [for the G1 1000 Guineas], for sure.”

Amo Racing supremo Kia Joorabchian added, “It's very exciting winning a Nell Gwyn here, it's amazing and I can't hold my excitement, to be honest. We've competed for the last few years and haven't quite managed to get through the line. She gave a cracking performance on her debut and was fantastic today. We've always loved her and we couldn't believe what price she was today. I have a really big [first] weekend [in May] as I've got Affirmative Lady going for the [GI] Kentucky Oaks in America, having won the Gulfstream Oaks quote convincingly. I have to decide whether to go there or come here, but it's a good decision to have to make.”

Pedigree Notes
Mammas Girl is the 12th of 13 foals and one of 11 scorers produced by a daughter of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Gharam (Green Dancer). Descendants of Gharam also include G3 Summer S.-winning G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Commonwealth Cup placegetter Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), stakes-winning GI Spinster S. second Tamweel (Gulch), G1 Phoenix S. third Lottie Dod (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and GSW G1 Cape Fillies Guineas third Third Runway (SAf) (Gimmethegreenlight {Aus}). The April-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to MGSP Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Master Of War (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), Listed Waterford Testimonial S. third Life In Colour (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and a yearling colt by Dandy Man (Ire).
