Spendthrift Releases Reduced Stud Fees for ’21

Spendthrift Farm announced Tuesday the reduction of stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021. Leading sire Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) heads the roster at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N. Booked full, he represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021. Top sire Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) and second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Malibu Moon stood for $60,000, while Omaha Beach stood for $45,000 in 2020. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso (Curlin), winner of last fall’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic who stood for $30,000 this season, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade I-winning millionaire Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) will also join Spendthrift for the 2021 season following a start in the Breeders’ Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

Multiple Grade I-winning juvenile Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro), 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole (Eskenderya), and the Northern Hemisphere’s leading third-crop Sire Goldencents (Into Mischief) will all stand for $15,000 S&N. All three stood for $25,000 in 2020.

Additionally, fees have been reduced for the following stallions (all S&N); Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humo) and Lord Nelson (Pulpit) ($10,000); Cross Traffic (Unbridled’s Song) and Maximus Mischief (Into Mischief) ($7,500); Brody’s Cause (Giant’s Causeway), Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie), Cloud Computing (Maclean’s Music), Coal Front (Stay Thirsty), Dominus (Smart Strike), Free Drop Billy (Union Rags), Gormley (Malibu Moon), Hit It a Bomb (War Front), More Spirit (Eskendereya) and Temple City (Dynaformer) ($5,000).

‘We Are All In This Together’: Spendthrift Reduces Most Stud Fees For 2021

Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm announced reduced stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021.

Reigning champion general sire Into Mischief heads the roster yet again at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N and is booked full. He represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021.

Perennial leading sire Malibu Moon and popular second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile Bolt d'Oro, 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole, and the Northern Hemisphere's No. 1 Third-Crop Sire Goldencents will all stand for $15,000 S&N.

Spendthrift will also add multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma new to its stallion ranks. The Met Mile-winning son of Candy Ride (Arg) is set to compete in the Breeders' Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

Pennsylvania-Bred Gun Runner Colt Tops Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale concluded Tuesday with figures on par with the 2019 renewal, with eight of the top 10 prices paid for yearlings bred in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.

Hip 371, a colt from the first crop of Pegasus World Cup winner Gun Runner, sold for $270,000 during Tuesday's session to top the sale (video).

The chestnut colt was purchased by Lambe Bloodstock from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent. Hip 371 out of Stormy Tak, a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Lady Tak, making her a half-sister to Melody Lady, dam of this year's Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt winner Volatile. The sale topper was bred in Pennsylvania by Jon A. Marshall.

A pair of Maryland-bred colts sold for more than $200,000 during the second session to account for the sale's second- and third-highest prices. The first of these was Hip 451, a son of Flatter which sold for $250,000 to Bell Gable Stable from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent (video).

The dark bay or brown colt is out of Apple Cider, a More Than Ready daughter of Grade 2 winner Who Did It and Run, and half-sister to stakes winners Giant Run and American Victory. Hip 451 was bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.

The third-highest price of the sale was paid for Hip 383, a son of Street Sense sold for $240,000 to West Bloodstock, agent for Repole and St. Elias Stables from the consignment of Chanceland Farm, agent (video). The bay colt is out of the Polish Numbers mare Tanca, who has seven winners from as many to race, including stakes winners Cordmaker, Las Setas, and Corvus. Hip 383 was bred in Maryland by Robert T. Manfuso and Kathryn M. Voss.

The sale's top filly was a daughter of Malibu Moon sold for $140,000 during Tuesday's session (video). Offered as Hip 541, the filly was purchased by Charles J. Zacney from the consignment of Candyland, agent. The bay filly is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Fire of Freedom, who has produced four winners to date, including multiple stakes placed Travel Advisory. Fire of Freedom is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Flat Fleet Feet. The top filly was bred in Maryland by Candyland Farm.

All told, 379 yearlings sold for a total of $9,161,200. The average was $24,172 and the median was $14,000; both figures were nearly identical to last year's results. The RNA rate was 21 percent, also on par with 2019 results.

Keeneland Reached $200 Million In Sales At Midway Point Of September Yearling Auction

Keeneland marked the halfway point in its 12-day September Yearling Sale with today's session highlighted by the sale of a colt from the first crop of Unified for $450,000 to Three Amigos.

Consigned by Four Star Sales, agent, the colt is out of Fay Na Na, by Majestic Warrior, and from the family of Grade 1 winner Klimt. Three Amigos is the name used to purchase horses for Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. longtime clients of trainer Bob Baffert.

Keeneland sold 239 horses on Saturday for $18,364,200, for an average of $76,838 and a median of $52,000. Cumulative sales for the auction, which began Sept. 13, are $200,750,700 for 1,028 horses, for an average of $195,283 and a median of $130,000.

The day's second-highest price was $410,000 spent by Maverick Racing to acquire a colt by Violence from the consignment of Hidden Brook, agent. He is out of the stakes-placed City Zip mare Brinkley, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Bound for Nowhere. The colt also is from the family of champion Midnight Lute.

Cheyenne Stables paid $400,000 for the session's top-priced filly, a daughter of Malibu Moon who is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Stanford and graded stakes-placed Hedge Fund. Consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent, she is out of the Distorted Humor mare Rosy Humor and is from the family of European champion and sire Johannesburg.

Donato Lanni, agent for SF/Starlight/Madaket, spent $385,000 for a colt by Twirling Candy who is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Real Story and stakes winner My Afleet. Out of the winning Lasting Approval mare My Own Story, he was consigned by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent.

Paramount Sales, agent, led all consignors on Saturday by selling 21 yearlings for $2,193,000.

The leading buyer was Kenny McPeek, who acquired five horses for $642,000.

The September Sale continues Sunday with the first session of the two-day Book 4. All remaining sessions of the sale, which runs through Sept. 25, begin at 10 a.m.
