Bated Breath’s Makaloun Annexes The Prix de Guiche

His Highness The Aga Khan's Makaloun (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) suffered the only reverse of a five-race freshman campaign when a close third over 10 furlongs in a hot renewal of October's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud and bounced back in style to garner Tuesday's G3 Prix de Guiche, dropping down in trip on seasonal return, at Chantilly. Last term's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage and G3 Prix de Conde victor went postward as the 23-10 second choice–for a heat won by Lawman (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in recent years–and slipstreamed stablemate Veldeni (Fr) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) from flagfall in this nine-furlong test. Seizing an opportunity as Veldeni ghosted away from the inner and offered an open seam along the far-side rail into the straight, he bounded to the front soon after turning for home and kept on powerfully under mild rousting inside the final quarter mile to withstand the dual late threat of Millebosc (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Listed Prix Maurice Caillault victor Fort Payne (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) by a half length and a short neck for a third black-type success.

“That was perfect teamwork, the pacemaker [Veldeni] did a super job and Makaloun had the most perfect reintroduction,” said winning trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He quickened nicely, he was not finished at the end and didn't have a hard race. I saw what I wanted to see. With [undefeated Listed Prix de Suresnes winner] Saiydabad, we now have two potential runners for the [June 6 G1] Prix du Jockey Club and, personally, I would like to run both. However, we'll discuss it with His Highness and the entourage to see where we go from here.”

Makaloun is the latest of four foals and one of three winners from as many runners out of a dual-winning half-sister to Listed Prix Omnium II victor Markazi (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The May-foaled homebred's fourth dam Mariyada (Diesis {GB}), from the immediate family of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), is kin to G3 Prix d'Hedouville winner and G2 Prix Niel runner-up Malakim (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and also to the granddam of Listed Fleur de Lys S. victress Mayonga (Ire) (Dr Fong).

Guiche The Focus on Tuesday

Some leading G1 Prix du Jockey Club hopefuls take the next step en route to the Chantilly showcase on Tuesday as that track stages the nine-furlong G3 Prix de Guiche, won in 2007 by Lawman (Fr) and five years ago by another subsequent winner of the domestic Classic in Almanzor (Fr). Likely favourite will be the Wertheimers' Adhamo (Ire) (Intello {Ger}), who scored by three lengths in the G3 Prix la Force over this trip at ParisLongchamp Apr. 11, but he faces a stern opponent in The Aga Khan's returning Makaloun (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}). He was beaten for the first time when third in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October, but that form is looking strong after a trio who finished in his wake have gone on to win black-type races and one of them is the new red-hot Epsom Derby favourite Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Previously successful by five lengths from the smart filly Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) in the G3 Prix de Conde over this trip at Chantilly, the Jean-Claude Rouget trainee has a pacemaker in Veldeni (Fr) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) to aid his cause. Also in the mix is Alain Jathiere and Philippe Demercastel's Fort Payne (Fr) (Rio de la Plata), the impressive winner of the Mar. 9 Listed Prix Maurice Caillault over this course and distance who is on turf for the first time.

Bated Breath’s Makaloun Has Conde Rivals For Lunch

Fresh from victory in last month’s Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l’Elevage going one mile at Deauville, His Highness The Aga Khan’s Makaloun (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) was in no mood to relinquish his perfect record and dominated all seven rivals in Monday lunchtime’s G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. He had debuted with a June 12 seven-furlong tally at Toulouse and doubled up over the same trip in a July 15 conditions heat at Mont-de-Marsan in his penultimate start. Breaking well to lead after the initial strides of this nine-furlong slog in deep mud, the 11-10 pick was never in danger on the front end and glided clear under mild coaxing inside the final quarter mile to easily outpoint Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) by an impressive five lengths for a first pattern-race score. Kergrist (Fr) (Milanais {Fr}) was best of the rest and an additional four lengths adrift in third.

“This is a nice one, a real nice one,” proclaimed trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He has so many qualities and has showed speed earlier, that he stays and that he handles all types of ground. You can also make the running with him or adopt waiting tactics, he is the real deal. Today was very deep and he displayed a lovely fluent action. It’s nice to have a talented juvenile undefeated in four starts and, if all is well, he will have one more run this year in the [G1] Criterium de Saint Cloud.”

Makaloun is the latest of four foals and one of three winners from as many runners out of a dual-winning half-sister to Listed Prix Omnium II victor Markazi (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The May-foaled homebred’s fourth dam Mariyada (Diesis {GB}), from the immediate family of G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), is kin to G3 Prix d’Hedouville winner and G2 Prix Niel runner-up Malakim (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and also the granddam of Listed Fleur de Lys S. victress Mayonga (Ire) (Dr Fong).
