Harvard Has Them Seeing ‘Red’ In Maiden Romp

HARVARD (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief) finished second behind a good-looking debut from American Prince (Liam's Map) at Gulfstream Feb. 28 and was stretching out to two turns off a distant runner-up effort behind Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy)'s 'TDN Rising Star' half-brother Stage Raider (Pioneerof the Nile) in a sloppy seven-furlong maiden at Keeneland Apr. 10. Stage Raider, incidentally, is the morning-line 2-5 favorite for a one-mile Belmont allowance Friday afternoon. Pounded into 1-2 favoritism with blinkers going on for the first time, Harvard was urged along early between rivals to lead heading into the first turn and was allowed to dictate a very easy pace while traveling comfortably. Asked for his best in upper stretch, the bay put the race to bed within a few strides, accounting for 23-10 second pick W W Crazy (Jess's Dream) by 4 1/2 very comfortable lengths. Harvard is a full-brother to Classic Empire, Ch. 2yo Colt, MGISW, $2,520,220; and a half-brother to Exclamation Point (Concord Point), SP, $290,540; Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus), MSW, $202,945; and Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), MSW, $170,714, and is a maternal grandson of SW & MGISP In Her Glory (Miswaki). Flatter Colt Strolls in Meydan Unveiling

1st-Meydan, AED82,500, Maiden, 2-13, NH/SH 3yo, c/g, 1600m, 1:37.16, ft.
PANADOL (c, 3, Flatter-Arradoul, by Dixieland Band), making his racecourse bow in this spot, was not the quickest away, but soon established a half-length lead as the field exited the chute. Bowling along and doing it very easily, the blaze-faced colt's advantage shrank on the bend. He was challenged by Anbar (Bodemeister) at the head of the lane, but shrugged off that foe to win going away by 7 3/4 lengths. Endifaa (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) emerged late to be best of the rest, 1 3/4 lengths in front of Anbar, who held third in a blanket finish.

“He's a nice horse and did it very well today and showed good quality,” said jockey Mickael Barzalona. “At home, I got up on him in his last gallop and I could feel he was very green, but I was very pleased with him [today]. He was very professional. They asked me if I thought he could get farther and I think he can.”

The winner is a half to the SP Backwood Bay (Girolamo), $107,000; Permanent Vacation (Elusive Quality), SP-Ven; and to the dam of SW Celandine (Street Sense), SP Lazarus Project (Discreetly Mine) and GIII Pilgrim S. runner-up J. S. Choice (Congrats). Arradoul has since produced Alarra, a 2-year-old filly by Alpha and was covered by Audible last spring after missing to Runhappy the year prior. Juvenile: Maiden Keepmeinmind Deserves A Shot After Runner-Up Finish In Breeders’ Futurity

Later Friday morning at Keeneland, Southern Equine Stables' Keepmeinmind, runner-up in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1), and stablemate Dreamer's Disease, an easy allowance winner on Oct. 3, drilled 5 furlongs in company in preparation for possible starts in the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance on Nov. 6.

With trainer Robertino Diodoro watching trackside, Keepmeinmind with David Cohen aboard broke off 3 lengths behind Dreamer's Disease and Adam Beschizza. At the wire, the difference was a length with Keepmeinmind credited with a :58.20 clocking and Dreamer's Disease in :58.60. The duo galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:11.40.

Diodoro believes Keepmeinmind deserves a shot at the Breeders' Cup even though the son of Laoban is a maiden after two starts. His resume going into the Breeders' Cup is similar to Good Magic, who won the 2017 Juvenile and earned the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male.

“In the Breeders' Futurity, he got in some traffic on the turn but then David (Cohen) tipped him to the outside and he came on again,” Diodoro said about Keepmeinmind. “I may have different thoughts if he had had the perfect trip, but there are two factors here: one, the trouble he had in the last race, and two, the way he has been training.”

Today's work came on the heels of a :49.20 half-mile on Oct. 17. Keepmeinmind is scheduled to have his final pre-Breeders' Cup work Oct. 30.

Diodoro said if Dreamer's Disease, another Southern Equine homebred by Laoban, does not get in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile field, he would pass on running the colt in the $100,000 Nyquist at 6½ furlongs here on the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup undercard and likely wait for a race at Churchill Downs that month.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Four Tracks, Four Tough Maiden Races With $100,000 Guarantee

The Stronach 5 will feature races Friday from Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields, Laurel Park and Gulfstream Park West along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout and a $100,000 guaranteed pool.

Four of the five races in the popular Stronach 5 will be maiden events. Races from Santa Anita and Golden Gate will feature 2-year-old maidens while races from Gulfstream West and Laurel will feature maiden 3-year-olds and up. The only race in the sequence not for maidens will be the second leg, Laurel's seventh race, an optional claimer at six furlongs on the main track.

· Leg Two –Laurel Park 7th Race: (8 entries, 6 furlongs) 4:04 ET, 1:04 PT

· Leg Four –Santa Anita 3th Race: (10 entries, 5 ½ furlongs turf) 5:08 ET, 2:08 PT

· Leg Five –Golden Gate Fields 3rd Race: (8 entries, 1-mile) 5:25 ET, 2:25 PT

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
