Ron Walker Named Jockey Club Steward at Finger Lakes

Ron Walker has been named The Jockey Club steward for Finger Lakes Racetrack and will take the place of Samantha Randazzo, who was appointed as The Jockey Club steward for The New York Racing Association tracks. Walker has been involved with horse racing since 1981 and has been an owner, breeder, trainer, and racing official. Prior to becoming steward at Finger Lakes, he was the state steward for the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission, spent nine years as the presiding steward for the New Mexico Racing Commission and also worked as a steward at Mahoning Valley Race Course and at Calder. He is Racing Officials Accreditation Program certified.

Grand Isle Becomes First Stakes Winner For Always Dreaming

Since breaking his maiden at second asking in a 9 3/4 length gate-to-wire romp at Thistledown July 12, Grand Isle stayed in state-bred company and jumped up to the stakes ranks with a pair of back-to-back second-place efforts in the Hoover S. and the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten S. Aug. 13. Making his first start since then, and his first start at Mahoning Valley, Saturday's 6-1 shot rated kindly off the early pace from fifth before gradually making up ground up the backstretch run. As room opened along the fence around the far turn, Grand Isle sprinted through the gap and easily opened up on the field down the stretch, winning by daylight as much the best.

The first black-type winner for his freshman sire (by Bodemeister), Grand Isle is out of a half-sister to MGSW Raylene (Tabasco Cat) and from the family of MG1SW Ad Valorem (Danzig). His dam produced a yearling  filly by National Flag and a weanling filly by Yosida (Jpn) but was not reported bred for next season. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Mahoning Valley Hosting Jockey Jam PDJF Fundraiser

Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course will host its third annual fundraising event for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Saturday, Oct. 29. This year's event will hold a new name, Jockey Jam, and see the addition of a karaoke dinner fundraising event, Jockey Jamboree, to be held Friday, Oct. 28.

“The mission statement behind the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund is one of importance to us and the racing community here at Mahoning Valley Race Course,” said Rob Swedinovich, Vice President and General Manager.

In the events two previous additions, the jockey colony, horsemen, Mahoning Valley's team members, and local community came together to help raise over $5,000 for the cause.

Tickets to the dinner portion of the event remain available for $50 by reservation here. For those interested in only karaoke, doors will reopen at 7 p.m. at the cost of a $20 donation to the PDJF at the door. Fundraising events will continue Saturday at 12 p.m. in conjunction with a special 10-race Best of Ohio stakes card which will see $500,000 in purse money up for grabs for Ohio-bred horses.

Racegoers will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle for a $500 Harley Davidson gift card, a silent auction including several horse racing and sports memorabilia items, and signing and photo opportunities with PDJF recipient Roger Blanco, Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Mike Manganello and Mahoning's local jockey colony.
