Authentic Owners, Irad Ortiz Jr., Steve Asmussen Top National Earnings Standings

Spendthrift Farm LLC, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing – the ownership group that campaigned Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Gr. 1) and Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr. 1) winner Authentic – finished the year as the leading owner by earnings, according to final statistics released today by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry's official database for racing information. Irad Ortiz Jr. repeated as the top earner for jockeys and Steve Asmussen was the top money-earning trainer after finishing second the two previous years.

The year-end compilations are distributed annually by Equibase and include results from Thoroughbred racing in North America from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2020. Expanded North American racing leaders' lists that include all trainers, jockeys, owners, and horses are available within the statistical section at equibase.com. These lists include the ability to look at leaders in a variety of categories, including age, sex, surface, graded races, foaling year for horses, and the inclusion of designated foreign races.

Authentic, who won five of his seven races, led all Thoroughbreds in North American earnings with $7,170,000. In addition to his wins in the Derby and Classic, Authentic won the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (Gr. 1), the San Felipe Stakes (Gr. 2), and Sham Stakes (Gr. 3) and finished second in the Preakness Stakes (Gr. 1) and RUNHAPPY Santa Anita Derby (Gr. 1).

Completing the list of top 10 horses by North American earnings were Tiz the Law with $2,388,300, Tarnawa (IRE) with $2,080,000, Improbable with $1,810,000, Swiss Skydiver with $1,791,820, Mucho Gusto with $1,674,000, Monomoy Girl with $1,472,068, Whitmore with $1,426,500, Essential Quality with $1,335,144, and Vequist with $1,235,500.

Some of the leading horses also were the top earners from their respective foal crops. The leading earners by foaling year from the past five years were Essential Quality (by Tapit, 2018 foal crop), Authentic (by Into Mischief, 2017), Improbable (by City Zip, 2016), Vino Rosso (by Curlin, 2015), and Bricks and Mortar (by Giant's Causeway, 2014).

The partnership of Spendthrift Farm LLC, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing, which campaigned Authentic for the colt's final four races, earned $6,790,000 in North America in 2020 to lead all owners. Completing the list of top 10 owners by North American earnings in 2020 were Godolphin LLC, $5,703,770 (80 wins, 361 starts); Klaravich Stables, Inc., $5,323,398 (70/272); Gary Barber, $4,010,838 (59/377); Three Diamonds Farm, $3,869,111 (51/282); Calumet Farm, $3,657,128 (59/531); Juddmonte Farms, Inc., $3,387,810 (30/122); End Zone Athletics, $2,867,917 (163/801); Sackatoga Stable, $2,510,400 (6/18); and Lothenbach Stables, Inc. (Bob Lothenbach), $2,469,686 (54/388).

Asmussen, who also led all trainers in earnings in 2008 and 2009, sent out the winners of 422 races from 630 starters with 2,278 starts for earnings of $20,204,064 in 2020. Brad H. Cox finished second with his horses having won 216 races from 328 starters with 903 starts for earnings of $18,983,832.

Completing the list of top 10 trainers by North American earnings in 2020 were Bob Baffert, $18,923,887 (94 wins / 323 starts / 118 starters); Chad C. Brown, $16,596,956 (174/746/288); Michael J. Maker, $14,215,671 (270/1,428/431); Mark E. Casse, $11,393,960 (183/1,185/351); Todd Pletcher, $11,200,790 (190/ 870/ 310);William I. Mott, $9,467,346 (92/589/184); Christophe Clement, $6,227,813 (101/499/175); and Peter Miller, $6,134,655 (106/500/148).

Ortiz Jr., who last year set a single season earnings record, reached the winner's circle 300 times from 1,266 mounts in 2020 and earned $21,050,726. Finishing second was Joel Rosario with 194 wins from 1,052 mounts and earnings of $18,235,197.

Rounding out the list of top 10 jockeys by North American earnings in 2020 were Luis Saez, $16,511,372 (268 wins / 1,398 starts); Tyler Gaffalione, $15,612,262 (271/1,408); John R. Velazquez, $15,420,515 (101/662);Florent Geroux, $14,766,563 (160/861); Jose L. Ortiz, $13,811,296 (190/1,027); Ricardo Santana Jr., $12,793,803 (176/1,057); Javier Castellano, $12,461,620 (108/640); and Manuel Franco, $12,278,857 (140/1,011).

Royal Prince Aims for Starring Role in DeMille

Steve Landers Racing’s Royal Prince (Cairo Prince) is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar Sunday. The Brad Cox trainee came home first at Kentucky Downs Sept. 7, but with the gates sprung before the full field was loaded, the race was determined to be a non-wagering event. The gray colt, a half-brother to last year’s champion juvenile filly British Idiom (Flashback), officially broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles over the turf at Keeneland Oct. 2. Cutting back to a mile Sunday, the juvenile could give Cox his second graded win of the weekend at Del Mar following Arklow (Arch)’s score in Friday’s GII Hollywood Turf Cup.

Also invading from the East for the holiday weekend, trainer Graham Motion sends out Madaket Stables’ Wootton Asset (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). A two-time winner in his native France over the summer, the dark bay colt missed by just a nose when second in the Oct. 3 Laurel Futurity in his stateside debut. He was most recently fourth in the Oct. 31 Awad S. at Belmont Park.

Representing the home team is Legacy Ranch’s Big Fish (Mr. Big), who is two-for-two over the DeMille’s course and trip after a maiden score there Aug. 21 and a one-length tally in the Sept. 7 Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. He is returning to the oceanside oval after a fifth-place effort in the Oct. 4 Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita and he turned in a bullet five-furlong work in :59 3/5 over the Del Mar course Nov. 22.

Million Dollar Baby: Spielberg Tops Sunday’s Bob Hope At Del Mar

SF Racing, Starlight Racing or Madaket Stables, et al's Spielberg, a $1-million yearling purchase at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, takes the next step in his racing career at Del Mar on Sunday as he heads a field of six juveniles in the seventh edition of the G3 Bob Hope Stakes, a seven-furlong spin that carries a $100,000 purse.

Del Mar's morning line maker Jon White has hung the chestnut colt as the 6-5 favorite in the extended sprint, a race named for the show business icon who laid the path for his big Hollywood breakout when he became good pals with Bing Crosby during post-race parties at the shore oval in its first season (1937). Crosby and Hope went on to make nine “Road to….” movies, considered by many to be the most successful “buddy” pictures ever.

Spielberg, of course, has a Hollywood connection all his own, having been named for Steven Spielberg, the towering Tinsel Town figure who has proven to be one of cinema's quintessential figures as a director, producer and screenwriter with dozens and dozens of major movie credits on his ledger.

Spielberg, the racehorse, is a son of the top stallion Union Rags and has had a four-race career this season that has seen him twice go stakes-placed in Grade I races and then finally find the winner's circle in a straight maiden race at Del Mar on November 1. Trainer Bob Baffert sends his charge back two weeks later and will have the meet's leading rider, Abel Cedillo, in the tack for his run in the Hope.

Here's the full field for the Sunday stakes in post-position order with riders and morning line odds:

Reddam Racing's Ambivalent (Mario Gutierrez, 7/2); Spielberg; Drakos or Hanson's Weston (Drayden Van Dyke, 3-1); Saratoga West's Coastal Kid (Tyler Baze, 15-1); Tina and Jerome Moss' Red Flag (Victor Espinoza, 6-1), and Eric Homme's Uncle Boogie (Flavien Prat, 5-1).

Spielberg's chief threat would appear to be Weston, a gelded son of the War Front stallion Hit It a Bomb who has a pair of wins under his belt, including a tally in the Best Pal Stakes during the Del Mar summer meet. His last start saw him chase home Dr. Schivel and Spielberg in the Grade I Del Mar Futurity on September 7. The bay since has put in a series of sharp workout at Santa Anita for trainer and part-owner Ryan Hanson.

Ambivalent will have his backers in the sprint, too. The Constitution colt, a $550,000 2-year-old-in-training purchase earlier this year in Florida, is still a maiden, but it isn't for want of trying. This will be his sixth start and he's got a pair of stakes placings on his resume, as well as a pair of second-place finishes in straight maiden races. He runs out of the stable of trainer Doug O'Neill.

First post Sunday is the usual 12:30 p.m. with the featured Hope scheduled to go off at approximately 4 p.m.

Tamahere Impressive In U.S. Debut For Brown, Wins Sands Point

Swift Thoroughbreds, Inc., Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables' French-bred Tamahere made her North American debut a winning one in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 Sands Point at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Trained by four-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown, Tamahere entered the one-turn mile for sophomore fillies on the Widener turf off a nearly three-month layoff from a romping 7 1/2-length score in the Prix la Sorellina at La Teste De Buch in her native country.

Tamahere settled in seventh position as Pure Wow led the eight-horse field through splits of 23.87 seconds, 47.54 and 1:11.68 on the firm turf while being tracked by 2-1 post-time favorite Miss J McKay and longshot Drop a Hint.

Pure Wow maintained a precarious lead turning for home with Giacosa launching a four-wide bid and Tamahere following her run outside of rivals as Drop a Hint angled off the rail to stake her claim. Speaktomeofsummer, winner of the Grade 2 Lake Placid in July at Saratoga, was full of run but trapped behind rivals with a furlong to run as Tamahere, under urging from Irad Ortiz, Jr., demonstrated a powerful turn of foot and surged to a two-length victory in a final time of 1:35.21.

Speaktomeofsummer, with Joel Rosario up, arrived late to complete the exacta by three-quarters of a length over Drop a Hint.

Rounding out the order of finish were Pure Wow, a dead heat for fifth between Selflessly and Giacosa, Miss J McKay and Positive Power.

Brown said Tamahere, who was reluctant to load into the starting gate, performed to the potential she had shown in her morning workouts at Belmont and Saratoga.

“She trained brilliantly,” said Brown, who earned his fourth career Sands Point score. “As you can see behind the gate, there's still some work to do. She's a high-strung horse. She was a little bit keen early on, but Irad got her to settle and she showed us that turn of foot that she showed us in the morning. She's a really exciting horse to have for the future. We're lucky to have her. She gave us a lot of confidence that she would be a good horse.”

Brown's past Sands Point winners include Ball Dancing [2014], Uni [2017] and New and Improved [2019].

Ortiz, Jr., who guided Uni to her Sands Point score, said Tamahere settled nicely once away from the gate.

“She broke good and put me in a good position,” said Ortiz, Jr. “We got some pace in front of us and that worked out perfect because she settled down and relaxed so well. The trainer had told me 'she has a nice turn-of-foot, you're going to love her.' I just trusted Chad and waited as long as I could and when I asked her, she was ready.”

Rosario, aboard the late-closing Speaktomeofsummer, said his filly ran well once she saw daylight.

“It looked like for a second I had a hole to go through and then it just closed, so I had to wait a little longer,” said Rosario. “The other horse just got the jump. She ran well.”

Tamahere, bred in France by E.A.R.L. Elevage Du Sarai, banked $82,500 in victory while improving her record to 7-3-2-1. She paid $7 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing resumes Sunday at Belmont Park with a 10-race card highlighted by the 130th running of the Grade 3, $100,000 Futurity, a six-furlong turf sprint offering a “Win and You're In” berth to the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on November 6 at Keeneland. It is one of two turf stakes for juveniles on the 10-race card, with the Grade 3, $100,000 Matron for 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs also on the docket. First post is 12:50 p.m.
