Breeders’ Cup New Aim For Love

After removing Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) from the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe during Thursday’s final forfeit stage due to the deteriorating ground, trainer Aidan O’Brien confirmed Europe’s leading 3-year-old filly will target the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on Nov. 7 and is expected to stay in training at four.

“We had to make the decision today because there was no other stage after this,” O’Brien explained of the Arc call. “If Ryan [Moore] was declared to ride her he then couldn’t ride anything else [if Love was later taken out], so we had to make the decision today.

“It’s 4.1 on the penetrometer at the moment and there is a lot of rain forecast; it could get to 4.5 so we had to make a choice. Sadly I don’t think there’s any prospect of the ground improving much.”

Speaking to Sky Sports Racing later on Thursday morning, O’Brien said they will go with Love where good ground is more assured.

“It would be unusual if the ground came up good on Champions Day [at Ascot], it is usually soft or heavy so it would be wrong to carry on with her for another two weeks and then the same thing happen,” he said. “So we’ll give her a little time now and give her a nice run in the Breeders’ Cup. The plan is to have her in training next year, so that’s something to look forward to.”

TDN International Editor Kelsey Riley Talks Arc On Writers’ Room

In addition to all the Stateside action this weekend–the final leg of the Triple Crown, Fall Stars Weekend at Keeneland and 11 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” events–the biggest race of the year in Europe will also be run with Sunday’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris. Wednesday on the TDN Writers’ Room podcast presented by Keeneland, TDN International Editor Kelsey Riley joined the crew as the Green Group Guest of the Week to talk about the much-anticipated showdown between Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), how heavy rains may impact the running and much more.

Asked whether or not the Arc is a two-horse affair as the bettors have surmised, Riley said, “Oh no. It’s very much an open race, and the major development this week has been the rain that’s falling in Paris. Right now, the course at Longchamp is listed as ‘very soft’, which is the same as what it was last year when Enable ran second, and there’s more rain still forecast to come … So you have a horse like Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who’s been the best stayer in Europe the past couple seasons. I think that the soft going will help his chances a bit. It’ll turn the race into a bit more of a stamina contest.”

Stradivarius, currently a distant third choice for the bettors behind Enable and Love, is not the only potential upsetter on Riley’s radar.

“Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was third in last year’s Arc over this same soft going and ran a very game race there,” she said. “He won a Group 1 race [the Prix Ganay] in France earlier this year. His trainer, Jean-Claude Rouget has spoken very highly of him this week coming into it, saying this is the best he’s ever had him, and that they’ve had this as their key target ever since he finished third last year. Another horse that I find a little interesting is Rouget’s ‘other’ horse, the only other 3-year-old filly in the race besides Love, Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}). She was very impressive winning her first two starts this spring, and Jean-Claude, right from that point, was saying, ‘This is our Arc filly.'”

The success of fillies and mares has been a consistent theme throughout Arc history. Riley was asked about why they’ve competed so frequently and done so well against males in the race.

“With the weight scale in France this time of year, the 3-year-old fillies get a big weight break for the Arc,” she said. “They carry 121 pounds, which is what Enable carried when she won her first Arc. Three-year-old colts carry 125, older mares 128 and older horses 131 pounds. It’s also down to the fact that, especially at this time of year in Europe, there are fewer opportunities at the Group 1 level for [fillies and mares] over the mile and a quarter to a mile and a half. In both Britain and France, there are only two Group 1 races for fillies and mares from the summer onward.”

Elsewhere on the show, the writers discussed the Horseracing Safety Integrity Act passing the U.S. House of Representatives, broke down the 11-horse GI Preakness S. and reacted to Improbable (City Zip) taking charge in the older male division. Then, in the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, they analyzed the Kentucky Supreme Court decision that puts the future of historical horse racing machines in doubt and tried to figure out why alternative forms of gaming continue to grow while racing’s handle declines. ‘Arcs Are Never Easy To Win’: Frankie Dettori Talks Enable’s Chances In Fourth Arc De Triomphe

Champion racemare Enable will run in her fourth edition of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe next Sunday, trying to become the first horse in history to win the race three times. The 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, but finished second to Waldgeist over testing ground in 2019.

Her jockey, Frankie Dettori, talked to the Racing Post on Friday about the mare's chances to make history.

“I'm sure Enable will run her very best as she always has in the Arc but that might not be good enough with the likes of Love getting 7 lbs,” Dettori said. “The 3-year-old fillies when they are that good like Zarkava, Treve, Danedream and Enable have proved a tough nut to crack in the past.

“Arcs are never easy to win as everyone will be there as they all want to win one including the Derby winner, Love, and Stradivarius.”

Trained by John Gosden, Enable won the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Group 3 September Stakes this year. Her current record stands at 12 wins from 15 starts, including the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf.

Though the Arc is a “Win and You're In” for the Breeders' Cup Turf, it is expected to be Enable's final race before her retirement to the breeding shed.

Serpentine On Song For French Return

G1 Investec Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is on course for his first outing since that Classic upset in the Sept. 13 G1 Grand Prix de Paris, with the option of joining stablemate and likely favourite Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe thereafter.

“He had two quick runs leading up to the Derby–he’d only run the week before–and after the Derby he was a little bit quiet and a little bit tired and needed a little bit of time, but we always thought he was a very smart middle-distance horse,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien. “He has a busy next 10 days, so it will be interesting how it goes, but if we run him it will be a run to get him started and back, and then see where we go after that. But obviously a race like the Arc or something like that would be possible. Either way, we are hoping we will have him for next year.”

O’Brien revealed “everything is well” with the aforementioned Love in the wake of her most recent win in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

“We had it spaced out that there was a six-week gap from York to France, and that’s what we were very happy with,” the trainer said. “We got a chance to give her a couple of easy weeks, and then her programme would start building up again, and she’s back into her programme already–she’s very fresh. She’s doing nice canters at the moment, which she has to do to keep her right, because she gets very well and fresh in herself. Wayne [Lordan] rides her in all her work and he’s very happy with her.”

With Serpentine headed to Paris next week and a strong squad anticipated on the home front for Irish Champions Weekend, O’Brien’s riding squad will be well spread. The trainer noted he will be utilising some local riders for Doncaster’s St Leger meeting on the same weekend, including possibly Frankie Dettori for G1 Irish Derby victor Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) in the Leger itself.

“We have spoken to Frankie, and he’s going to be there for the Leger, which is great for us, so hopefully he will ride some of ours,” O’Brien said. “We haven’t really discussed it, but I’d imagine that [using British-based riders] is what will happen because we’ll probably have a lot of runners here and we’ll need the lads here. The problem is if the lads go there they can’t do anything for the next two weeks after it.

“I’d imagine we’ll probably need them at home for that weekend, and we have Frankie and William [Buick], James [Doyle], Adam [Kirby] and Oisin [Murphy]–they’ve all ridden for us, and we’re delighted they’ve agreed to do that whenever we have needed them. I think we’ll be OK that way.”

Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), meanwhile, is set to be among the headliners of the home team as she attempts to defend her title in the G1 Irish Champion S. She comes off a second to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte International and could be joined by the likes of Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) at Leopardstown.

“We’d be delighted if [Ghaiyyath] did come over,” O’Brien said. “It was Magical’s first run back for an autumn campaign. We’d be looking forward to the race and it would be great for everyone if he did come. She ran in York and Ryan [Moore] was very happy with her and thought she might progress for it. She’s a hardy lady and gives her all. There is every chance she’d run a very big race.”
