Flurry Content To Play Small Ball With Lady Flurry

Staton Flurry is set to be represented over the next couple of weekends in major graded stakes in the Midwest, but the Arkansas native is also not one to shy away from his Mid-South roots. On June 20, an otherwise sleepy and uneventful Monday afternoon on the American racing scene, Flurry homebred Lady Flurry (Lord Nelson) raised more than a few eyebrows, streaking home to best fellow Louisiana-breds by some nine lengths in a time that nearly lowered a track record that had been around for nearly four decades.

“I didn't expect that big of a blowout, but we knew she was training good going into it,” the Hot Springs native said of the filly, who was off as the 1-2 chalk. “We knew she had some speed in her and there is plenty of speed in her pedigree, but hard to say we expected that. To be that close to the track record was great.”

The listed track record for 4 1/2 furlongs was set by the future stakes winner Sondor when romping in by 10 lengths May 16, 1984. Lady Flurry was timed in an eased-down :51.63, with a final sixteenth in :5.96.

Flurry campaigned Lady Flurry's Arkansas-bred dam Patchofbadweather (Storm and a Half) to five wins from 13 starts–all between five and six furlongs–including the Lady Razorback Futurity in 2014. Patchofbadweather's dam was the champion Argentinian sprinter Preflorada (Arg) (Choir Prospect, by Mr. Prospector), who won a Group 1 sprint over five furlongs in :54.10. Flurry elected to send Patchofbadweather to the recently departed Lord Nelson for her 2019 covering.

“I just loved him for his speed, he was a big, fast, good-looking horse and, like I said, my mare's got some speed in her pedigree,” Flurry said. “Just took the approach of breed speed to speed and hope it holds.”

The owner/breeder said Lady Flurry was attractive and straight-forward growing up.

“She was always very smart,”he said. “All the Lord Nelsons I've seen are great-looking animals. She was always really easy to deal with, whereas her mom was a complete wild animal, an Arky-bred who had a mind of her own. She was fast also, but this filly is a whole lot more gentle to be around than her mom was. Definitely excited to see what the future holds for her.”

Having earned a strong 71 Beyer Speed Figure for the debut run, one wouldn't blame Flurry and trainer Karl Broberg for shooting for the stars. Instead, Flurry is happy enough to run the filly with her 'friends' and broach the subject of loftier targets somewhere in the future as her performance merits.

“We'll point her for the state-bred stakes the rest of the year, see if we can knock a few of those off and maybe see if she can't be champion 2-year-old filly in Louisiana,” he said. “For the most part, we'd like to keep her with her own kind, but I do think she can be competitive in open company.”

Flurry indicated that he returned Patchofbadweather to Arkansas earlier this year and the mare has a “really nice Army Mule colt” on the ground.

“The state-bred programs in Louisiana and Arkansas are so lucrative and it isn't a bad thing at all to have an Arkansas-bred these days,” he said.

Meanwhile, Flurry's part-owned 2020 GI Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) drew the outside stall in a field of five for Saturday's GII Fleur de Lis S. at Churchill Downs on a slightly bigger stage.

“She's been training great, probably as well as she's trained in a long time,” Flurry said of the 5-year-old mare, campaigned in partnership with Whisper Hill Farm and Qatar Racing. “Pauline's Pearl (Tapit) looks like she's taken a step forward and we'll have to match her, but [Shedaresthedevil] is doing great. We're expecting a big effort out of her this weekend and hopefully get her back in the winner's circle. We're taking it race by race with her, with the Breeders' Cup the goal, and we're going to work backwards from there. This is the first step.”

Flurry's own colors will be carried aboard GII Black-Eyed Susan S. winner Interstatedaydream (Classic Empire) when she makes her next start in the GIII Indiana Oaks at Horseshoe Indiana July 9. Shedaresthedevil won the same event two years ago as a prelude to her victory in the COVID-19-delayed Kentucky Oaks.

Flurry Filly Flies at First Asking

4th-Louisiana Downs, $23,000, (S), Msw, 6-20, 2yo, f, 4 1/2f, :51.63, ft, 9 lengths.
LADY FLURRY (f, 2, Lord Nelson–Patchofbadweather {SW}, by Storm and a Half) blew out three furlongs from the gate in a bullet :35 4/5 (1/36) over this strip June 14 and was the 1-2 mortal to kick her career off on a winning note. Showing good speed to race widest in a line of four early, the Flurry homebred poked her red blinkers in front entering the turn and from there, it was lights out. Firmly in front as they reached the quarter pole, Lady Flurry was the recipient of a couple of superfluous cracks of the crop in the final furlong before easing home tons the best. The final time of :51.63 is just 0.03 of a second slower than the posted 4 1/2-furlong track record of :51.60 set by Sondor in the pre-hundredths days in 1984. Hot Springs native Staton Flurry raced this filly's Arkansas-bred dam with Broberg to a victory in the 2014 Lady Razorback S. and Lady Flurry is the mare's second winner from as many to start. She is also the dam of the Louisiana-bred yearling colt Loudthundrhevyrain (Star Guitar) and an Arkansas-bred colt by Army Mule foaled Mar. 12. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $13,800. Louisiana Downs Appoints Mitch Dennison to General Manager of Racing

Louisville's Mitch Dennison has been named general manager of racing at Louisiana Downs. Dennison will oversee racing, mutuels, facility projects, and sponsorships at the Bossier City racetrack and casino.

Dennison has served as an assistant to Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen for the past 13 years, overseeing strings at Ellis Park and Louisiana Downs. He had also previously been affiliated with the D. Wayne Lukas barn. Despite his experience on the backside of the track, Dennison said he had an eye on racetrack management.

“I have been active in both Kentucky and Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) for many years,” said Dennison. “Understanding the concerns of horsemen is very important and should be vital to racetrack management. Kevin [Preston, owner of Louisiana Downs] is new to racing, but immediately recognized that. I have never been more excited about working in this industry!”

The Thoroughbred meet at Louisiana Downs kicks off on Kentucky Derby Day. The 84-day live racing season will run Saturdays through Tuesdays until Sept. 27.

“Mitch is extremely knowledgeable and shares my commitment to showing respect to each of the horsemen and their workers as well as ensuring the safety and integrity of our racing operation,” said Preston. “I like his energy and look forward to a very successful racing season.”

Louisiana Downs Announces Changes To 2022 Quarter Horse Schedule

The  2022 Quarter Horse racing season at Louisiana Downs began on January 10 and attracted strong interest from horsemen in the Mardi Gras Futurity (RG3).

Nominations for the first “official” futurity of the year topped previous numbers with Bruce Salard, executive director of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association (LQHBA) sharing that a record 223 payments had been received. Based on that level of interest, it was clear that trials for the 300-yard championship could not be completed in one day.

On Friday, January 28, the Louisiana State Racing Commission (LSRC) approved a request from David Heitzmann, director of racing for the Bossier City racetrack, to amend its schedule. Approval was granted for the following changes:

  • Trials for the Mardi Gras Futurity will now take place on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. The draw will take place on Saturday, February 26
  • Closing day of the 2022 live racing season will be on Wednesday, April 6, instead of  Thursday, April 8

“We appreciate the efficiency of the LSRC in approving the change in our schedule so that we can safely run all the trials for the Mardi Gras Futurity,” said Heitzmann. “Last year's purse was $349,946, but with such strong interest by horsemen, the ten finalists will run for a record purse on March 27.”

Trials for the $75,000-added Louisiana Downs Futurity (G3) will be run on Sunday, March 13 with the top ten qualifiers advancing to the final on Sunday, April 3. Schooling races will be offered On February 12 and 19 for 2-year-olds paid into the Mardi Gras Futurity as well as the Louisiana Downs Futurity.

Live Quarter Horse racing will be conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday through March 2. Beginning Sunday, March 6, the schedule changes to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. One Thursday race card will be added on March 31. Post time will be 1:00 p.m. (Central), except for Mardi Gras trial dates, which will begin at 11:00 am.
