“Looking Forward To The Next Chapter” – Jockey Louis Steward Retires At 27

Ebor-winning jockey Louis Steward has announced that he will retire from race-riding after an 11-year career in the saddle.

Steward, 27, started as an apprentice and achieved plenty of success, including winning the Cambridgeshire and the Balmoral Handicap with Bronze Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in 2014 for Marcus Tregoning.

Steward rode close to 200 winners in his career, with a season-best of 37 in 2014, the year he partnered Mutual Regard (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) to a 20-1 success in the valuable Ebor Handicap at York for Johnny Murtagh.

“After some long and careful thoughts I've decided my time in the saddle has come to an end,” Steward announced on Twitter.

“Thank you to everyone from my family, friends, owners, trainers and the stable staff that have given me some wonderful memories that I'll never forget. Looking forward to the next chapter!”

Goat Makes Up Ground In Racing League

It will be a neck-and-neck battle to the finish line next Thursday at the final meeting of The Racing League at Newcastle, with Team Thoroughbid leading by a mere four points (321) after Thursday's penultimate meeting at Lingfield.

Goat Racing-comprising Newmarket trainers Charlie Fellowes, Hugo Palmer, Tom Clover and George Scott-cut into Team Thoroughbid's lead with two wins at Lingfield, both with the team's reserve rider Louis Steward in the saddle. The horses were the Palmer-trained Red October (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and the Fellowes-trained Billhilly (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the latter of which won another Racing League event two weeks ago.

Steward told Sky Sports Racing: “I'm delighted for the horse, and delighted for Charlie and the team, everyone at home and the owners. They've done such a good job with this horse, just to revive his career. It's so good to see, and great to be on his back today.”

Steward now sits in joint-first with Hayley Turner in the Racing League jockeys' standings.

Team Thoroughbid had one win on Thursday thanks to the Richard Hannon-trained and Sean Levey-ridden Typhoon Ten (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}).
