Los Al Derby Won’t Be Run Saturday, Will Be Brought Back Sunday As Extra

The GIII Los Alamitos Derby will not be run as originally scheduled Saturday, July 3, Los Alamitos announced Wednesday. The race for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles will be brought back as an extra for Sunday, July 4 in hopes of drawing more entrants. Sunday is the penultimate day of Los Alamitos's Summer Thoroughbred Festival.

Entries for the July 4 program will be taken Thursday, July 1.

Los Alamitos: Two NHC Seats Up For Grabs In July 4 Handicapping Contest

The Los Alamitos Racing Association will offer a cash prize and two seats to the 2022 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas with a live money handicapping contest Sunday, July 4.

Cost to enter is $500. Of that amount, $100 will be placed in the contest prize pool with the remaining funds going towards a live-money wagering card.

Contestants must enter prior to the start of the second race – which has a scheduled post time of 1:28 p.m – July 4. Players can begin entering the contest at 10 a.m. that morning on the Mezzanine level of the Los Alamitos grandstand building.

Tournament races will include the entire card at Los Alamitos with permitted wagers including win, place, show, exactas, trifectas and daily doubles.

Each entry must wager a total of at least $400 during the contest to be eligible for prizes and each entry must wager at least $50 per race on a minimum of five races.

The player with the highest bankroll at the end of the day will be declared the winner and the player with the second highest bankroll will be the runner-up.

The winner will receive 50 percent of the prize pool. The remaining payoffs: 20 percent (2nd place), 15 percent (3rd place), 7.5 percent (4th place) and 7.5 percent (most money wagered).

McCarthy, Centeno Avoid Serious Injury In Los Alamitos Spill

Jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Alexis Centeno escaped injury after being involved in a scary incident in Sunday's fourth race at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.

Sherlock, Centeno's mount in the race for 2-year-old maidens bred or sired in California, broke fast from his outside post, but steadily veered in sharply and crashed into Creative Peak, who had broken from the inside under McCarthy.

Both McCarthy, who had won the third race aboard Prince Magician, and Centeno were sent to nearby Long Beach Memorial for evaluation and were later released. Both riders were conscious and alert after the mishap.

Sherlock, a son of Stay Thirsty owned in partnership by breeder Terry Lovingier and trained by Walther Solis, crashed over the rail, ran through the infield and jumped the inner rail in the stretch before being corralled. He suffered some scrapes and cuts on his left side, according to Los Alamitos steward Tom Ward. Creative Peak, a Creative Cause colt owned by Heinz Steinmann and trained by Jeff Metz, was examined by veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead and escaped uninjured.

Racing resumes Friday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.

Los Alamitos’ Summer Thoroughbred Festival Begins Friday

The first Thoroughbred meet of 2021 at Los Alamitos will begin Friday, June 25.

The seven-day Summer Thoroughbred Festival will continue through Monday, July 5. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday (June 25-27) the first week and Friday-Monday (July 2-5) the second week. Post time each racing day will be 1 p.m.

The season will be highlighted by a pair of graded stakes races – the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M. for fillies and mares (3-year-olds & up) at 6 ½ furlongs and the Grade 3, $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles.

The Great Lady M. will be run Monday, July 5 while the Los Alamitos Derby will be offered Saturday, July 3.

The wagering menu includes the Pick Six – with the traditional 70-30 split – a pair of $1 Pick 4's – races 2-5 and the final four races – as well as the extremely popular Players' Pick 5 – a 50-cent minimum wager with a reduced 14% takeout rate which is offered on the first five races.

Los Alamitos offers free general parking and preferred parking is $5.

The July 4 program will feature a live money handicapping contest with two seats available to the 2022 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.

The other stakes race during the meet is the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California.

Entries for the Bertrando, which will be run at one mile, will be taken Wednesday, June 23.
