Enable Exits September in Good Form, Arc Next

Saturday’s G3 September S. heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who has won two editions of the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and is pointing toward her fourth-straight appearance in the ParisLongchamp showpiece, is fit and well following her performance at Kempton. The 6-year-old bay has won 15 of her 18 starts for her breeder Juddmonte, and polished off her five rivals by seven lengths in the all-weather Group 3 over the Arc trip of 1 1/2 miles. After running second in last year’s Arc, Enable also filled that position in her seasonal return, the July 5 G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown. She returned to her imperious best in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot on July 25, winning her third edition by 5 1/2 lengths prior to her tour-de-force in the September.

“These well-thought-out plans do have a propensity to go wrong, but thankfully everything seemed to go smoothly and she’s come out of the race well,” said Prince Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, who will be attending the Oct. 4 Arc if at all possible. “It was a nice race for her. She was pretty much out on her own, which is good, and it’s another piece of the jigsaw in place.

“I’ve always said she is a mare who stirs the emotions. It’s not just her great ability, but also her personality and her looks that have really captured many hearts.

“She has become a huge part of all our lives and we have to enjoy her. Of course her achievements have put her in the great pantheon of thoroughbred stars, but win, lose or draw, we have to try to enjoy her.”

Enable on Course for Kempton

Dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is pleasing connections ahead of a start in the G3 September S. over the Kempton synthetic on Sept. 5. The 6-year-old Juddmonte silksbearer took the 2018 September S. in advance of her second Arc crown. Second in that ParisLongchamp showpiece in 2019, the John Gosden trainee was also runner-up in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. to Godolphin’s Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) this July, but was back in top form in the G1 King George Vi & Queen Elizabeth S. on July 25.

Enable’s Arc opposition is arguably the stiffest yet, as since the Coral-Eclipse Ghaiyyath rolled by three lengths in the G1 Juddmonte International S. at York on Aug. 19 after taking the G1 Coronation Cup S. in June, his third Group 1 on the bounce.  Standout Aidan O’Brien filly Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was also boosting her reputation recently with a victory in the Aug. 20 G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks and looms a formidable rival in the Arc. Racing for the Coolmore partners, the sophomore miss claimed that Knavesmire contest by five lengths. In the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas, the blaze-faced chestnut had drawn off by 4 1/4 lengths and her margin of victory in Epsom’s G1 Investec Oas was nine lengths.

“What we saw from both was no great surprise, really,” said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Prince Khalid Abdullah. “Both of them had very strong form going into their races–they were both favourites and both won well. Really they just proved what very good horses they are, but I think we already knew that–it wasn’t a surprise.

“Enable is in good form, anyway, and still on course for Kempton. Come the Arc, what will be will be. It won’t be just those two we’ll have to worry about. The Arc is so well revered for a reason-all the opposition merits respect. No Arc is ever easy.”

Siskin’s Next Start Up in the Air

Classic hero Siskin (First Defence), who lost his unbeaten tag with a third in last week’s G1 Qatar Sussex S., has emerged from that effort well, but his connections are not sure where he will start next. Trained by Ger Lyons for Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation, the homebred had scored an impressive victory in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas in his sophomore bow at The Curragh on June 12. The bay was unbeaten in four runs as a juvenile, including the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. and G2 GAIN Railway S.

“He’s come out of the race well,” said Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe. “I’ve got to discuss with Prince Khalid what he would like to do. We’ll look at all the options, which are pretty straightforward really.”

Another Juddmonte colourbearer also received a positive update, as two-time G1 Prix de l’Arc heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) continues to shine after take the July 25 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot, her third win in the race. Second in the 2019 Arc ,the John Gosden trainee filled the same position in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. on July 5. She is pointing to either York’s Aug. 20 G1 Yorkshire Oaks or Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S., followed by another try in the Arc in France in October.

Added Grimthorpe, “All is good with Enable. She hasn’t done a lot since Ascot, but she came out of the race well and everybody is happy with her.”

Juddmonte International Purse Reduced

Prize money for this year’s G1 Juddmonte International S. at York has been cut to £275,000 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year’s Group 1 was worth £1 million but with racing currently taking place behind closed doors after a delayed start to the season, the track’s revenue has taken a serious hit, with the venue underlining “80% of prior year annual revenues for York Racecourse flowed from the presence of a gathering, either on a raceday or as part of our extensive non raceday events programme, none of whom have been permitted at the venue since mid-March.”

The track has hailed the contributions from the Horseracing Betting Levy Board (HBLB) and sponsors with the G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks, G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe and Sky Bet Ebor all set to carry a purse of £250,000 as other feature races. The G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack, G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and G2 Sky Bet City of York S. will have £100,000 purses with the Sky Bet-sponsored G2 Great Voltigeur S. and G2 Lowther S. both offering £75,000. The European Breeders’ Fund will back five races, headlined by the £35,000 Listed Sir Henry Cecil Galtres S., and including two of the three new class two handicaps worth £30,000 that have been added to the race programme.

York kicks off its season on Thursday and chairman, Lord Grimthorpe, said, “We are delighted to be back racing at York, albeit initially behind closed doors. Despite challenging circumstances for all, we have tried to put our best foot forward with an incredibly exciting race programme and an investment in prize money well above industry agreed levels. We are hugely appreciative and grateful for the wonderful support of our sponsors, annual badgeholders, partners and all who make York Racecourse so special.

“While we look forward to the day we can welcome the return of spectators and supporters to York Racecourse, in the meantime I hope that people will follow and enjoy the sport on their televisions and mobile devices.”
