Ballylinch Stud’s Lope De Vega Remains At €125,000

Lope De Vega (Ire) will stand at €125,000 in 2022, that figure being unchanged from his 2021 fee at Ballylinch Stud, where he has stood throughout his 11 covering seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. His popularity transcends Europe, however, and the 14-year-old son of Shamardal is now the sire of 13 Group/Grade 1 winners in America, Australia, Britain, Ireland, France, and Dubai.

“This year Lope de Vega confirmed that he is one of the world's elite sires, with an exceptional 48 black-type horses in 2021 alone,” said Ballylinch Stud managing director John O'Connor. “He has achieved success at the highest level on four different continents and is one of those rare sires who can truly be called a global success. Ever popular at the sales, Lope De Vega was the leading sire at Tattersalls Book 1 by aggregate and his yearlings averaged over €220,000.”

Lope De Vega's stud-mate Make Believe (GB) has also had wide international representation via his leading son Mishriff (Ire), whose victories this year have come in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Britain, having become a Classic winner in France in 2020. Make Believe's fee has been put up for 2022, from €15,000 to €17,500.

“Make Believe has made an outstanding start to his stallion career by siring the exceptionally talented and versatile Mishriff in his first crop,” O'Connor added. “Mishriff was ably backed up by Group winners Noticeable Grace, Believe In Love, Ocean Fantasy and Rose of Kildare. His much stronger crops to come will see him establish himself as one of Europe's leading sires for the future. Breeders were again rewarded in the sales ring as his yearlings averaged over three times his stud fee.”

It has also been a breakthrough year for New Bay (GB), who was represented by his first Group 1 winner in the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Saffron Beach (Ire), as well as Classic prospect and G2 Champagne S. winner Bayside Boy (Ire). New Bay's fee has risen to €37,500 for 2022 from €20,000.

Completing the line-up at Ballylinch Stud is the 2019 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Waldgeist (GB). The son of Galileo (Ire), who has his first foals for sale this year, has had his fee reduced to €15,000 for his third season at stud.

“The best son of the much-lamented Galileo since the outstanding Frankel, he has been given a great chance to succeed in his stallion career,” said O'Connor. “Waldgeist was a high-class 2-year-old who went on to win a vintage Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and his first foals in the hands of top breeders are giving every indication that he could be just as successful at stud as on the racecourse. He has captured the imagination of breeders across Europe, and we expect to see him strongly supported again in 2022.”

Lope De Vega’s Duke De Sessa Takes The Eyrefield

After Saturday's exhilarating juvenile action at Doncaster and Saint-Cloud, Leopardstown pitched in late afternoon to offer up its own 2022 Classic hopeful in TDN Rising Star Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the nine-furlong G3 Eyrefield S. Impressive over a mile at The Curragh when breaking his maiden Aug. 21, Newtown Anner Stud Farm's homebred had disappointed when sixth of seven over the same track dropping a furlong for the Sept. 12 G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and had a point to prove in a deep renewal of this prize. Waited with in rear early as Colin Keane watched the action unfold, the 11-2 shot was still at the tail of the field two out but got motoring down the outer to reel in Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) in the last 50 yards. At the line, he had prevailed by half a length, with 1 1/4 lengths back to Anchorage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third in a race that is likely to be a source of big names from next year onwards.

“He's a lovely colt, still immature, and he'll make a lovely colt next year,” trainer Dermot Weld said. “Hopefully he'll come back for a Guineas trial and I see him potentially as an Irish 2000 Guineas horse. He just had to wait there to get him out and get him balanced and he came home exceptionally well. He has a lot of pace this horse and the lovely thing about him is that he has stamina as well. He'll be a lovely mile or mile-and-a-quarter horse for next year, please God.”

Duke de Sessa is a son of the G3 Give Thanks S. runner-up Dark Crusader (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who is a half to the Listed Yeats S. winner and G3 Stanerra S.-placed Naughty Or Nice (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The third dam Mosaique Bleue (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), who produced the GI Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup H. hero Subtle Power (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Muncie (Ire) also by Sadler's Wells, and the G1 Prix Royal-Oak winner Mersey (GB) (Crystal Palace {Fr}). Dark Crusader's yearling and foal are full-brothers to Duke de Sessa.

Lucky Vega To Stand At Irish National Stud

Group 1-winning 2-year-old and Classic-placed 3-year-old Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}-Queen Of Carthage, by Cape Cross {Ire}) will stand the Northern Hemisphere season at the Irish National Stud in 2022. He is currently serving his first book at Yulong Stud in Australia.

Purchased by Yuesheng Zhang's Yulong Investments for €175,000 at the 2019 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, Lucky Vega was a debut maiden winner at Naas last June for trainer Jessica Harrington. He won the G1 Phoenix S. in his third start, becoming the only son of Lope De Vega to win a 2-year-old Group 1 over six furlongs while defeating St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), and wrapped up his campaign with a second in the G1 Middle Park S. Lucky Vega finished third in this year's G1 2000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and was retired after finishing second in the G1 St James's Palace S.

Lucky Vega is one of three winners out of Queen Of Carthage, herself a daughter of the G1 Prix de l'Opera winner Satwa Queen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}). Zhang reaffirmed his faith in the family when spending €630,000 on Lucky Vega's half-brother by Footstepsinthesand (GB) at the recent Goffs Orby yearling sale.

Irish National Stud Chief Executive Officer Cathal Beale said, “this is a great opportunity for the INS to offer our breeders a stallion with all the attributes they are looking for. He was fast and precocious, trained on at three and is a horse with excellent movement and presence. He is by the great Lope De Vega, who was the leading grossing stallion at Tattersalls Book 1 this year. His granddam was a Group 1 winner and his yearling brother looks exceptional, selling for €630,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale.”

Trainer Jessica Harrington added, “Lucky Vega was always a pleasure to train and took his work very well. He had great balance, power and speed. I look forward to training his sons and daughters and I think he has all the credentials to make into a high-class stallion.”

A fee will be announced at a later date.

Lope Y Fernandez Retired To The National Stud

Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}-Black Dahlia {GB}, by Dansili {GB}), a Group 3-winning 2-year-old who was five times Group 1-placed throughout his career, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at the National Stud in 2022. The Coolmore partners will retain part ownership alongside new owners The National Stud, Whitsbury Manor Stud and Nick Bradley Racing.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Lope Y Fernandez was bought by MV Magnier for €900,000 at Arqana's August Yearling Sale in 2018. A debut winner at The Curragh in June of his 2-year-old campaign, Lope Y Fernandez finished second and third, respectively, behind Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in the Listed Chesham S. the G2 Vintage S. before returning to The Curragh to take the G3 Round Tower S. Third in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, Lope Y Fernandez would go on to place in the G1 Prix Jean Prat, G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and GI Breeders' Cup Mile at three. He won the Listed Heritage S. this year at four and picked up another top-level placing when second to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 Queen Anne S.

“Lope Y Fernandez was a lovely, easy moving horse with loads of speed,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien. “He was probably very comfortable with anything from six furlongs to one mile. He's a great mover, has a great walk and a lovely mind.”

Out of the listed-placed Black Dahlia, Lope Y Fernandez is a half-brother to the G2 Vintage S. and G2 Kronimus Oettingen Rennen scorer Dark Vision (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Tim Lane, managing director of The National Stud, said, “Lope Y Fernandez is a hugely exciting addition to our stallion roster at The National Stud. He is an exceptionally good-looking individual and has a standout pedigree. I am a big fan of Lope De Vega and we are delighted to be standing his first son in the UK.”

Lope Y Fernandez's fee will be announced at a later date, and a limited number of breeding rights will be available.
