Cairo Prince, Lope de Vega Fillies Share OBS Bullet Thursday

The fifth session of the under-tack show for next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, suspended just under three hours by heavy rain, produced a pair of :9 4/5 bullet breezers, while two juveniles shared the fastest quarter-mile time of :21 flat Thursday in Central Florida.

First to hit the bullet time of :9 4/5 once action resumed around noon Thursday at OBS was a daughter of Cairo Prince (hip 839) out of the unraced Nippy (Pulpit). The gray filly is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Gibberish (Lea). She is consigned by Hal Hatch's Halcyon Hammock Farm and was purchased by Hatch for $62,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Also working in :9 4/5 during the same set was hip 859, an Irish-bred daughter of Lope de Vega (Ire) out of stakes winner and multiple group placed Only Mine (Ire) (Pour Moi {Ire}). Purchased by West Bloodstock for €250,000 at last year's Goffs Orby sale, she is consigned to the Spring sale by Niall Brennan Stables.

“I never expect :9 and change, but I expected her to work well,” said Niall Brennan, who is consigning the juvenile on behalf of a client. “She prepped well and she looks fast. She looks like a turf sprinter. And she's very honest. She's a nice, average-sized, strong well-made filly with great balance. And she's an efficient mover.”

Hip 859 is one of 10 Irish-bred offerings in the Spring sale. Brennan said an increased focus on turf racing in the U.S. should make the filly appealing to domestic buyers.

“The stallion is so good–he's a top stallion in Europe–and the mare is young and she could run,” Brennan said of the filly's pedigree. “Turf racing is very popular now in America, too. There is a lot more turf racing, even for 2-year-olds, and the money is great, especially in Kentucky and New York. I don't think people are really that afraid to buy turf horses anymore, even at the 2-year-old sales. If you win a stake and you're in that winner's circle, it doesn't matter if it's a turf race or a dirt race, you're just as happy.”

Hip 851, a colt from the first crop of GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit, shared Thursday's quarter-mile bullet time of :21 flat. Consigned by Eddie Woods, the gray juvenile is out of Oh Kay See (Notional), a half-sister to Grade I winner So Many Ways (Sightseeing). He was purchased by Quarter Pole Enterprises for $100,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale.

Pick View LLC sent out a filly by Dortmund (hip 864) to also work the quarter-mile in :21 flat. The chestnut is out of Our Conquistadora (Wilburn), a half-sister to graded placed Augment (Aptitude). She was purchased by Thorostock for $25,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall sale.

The breeze show, which was suspended shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, resumed just before noon and concluded by 4 p.m., but conditions remained good throughout the day, according to Brennan.

“There was a lot of rain, which kind of surprised everybody,” he said. “Looking at the forecast last night, there was nothing about it and then suddenly this morning we were all seeing this come in. We got some of the breeze show in and they made the right call to suspend it. It got heavy and there were thunder storms. It rained for a good hour, hour and a half. There was a lot of water, but they gave the track a chance to drain, they harrowed it. It's an amazing surface that they had that much rain and half an hour after it stopped we were back breezing. The track was in excellent condition.”

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday with bidding commencing each day at 10:30 a.m.

Lope de Vega’s New Science Strikes For Newmarket Success

Charlie Appleby trainee New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who ran seventh in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S., followed up a first black-type win in July's Listed Pat Eddery S. with a fourth in ParisLongchamp's Sept. 5 G3 Prix La Rochette and lined up match fit for Tuesday's Listed bet365 European Free H. coming back off a third in Meydan's Feb. 4 Listed Jumeirah Classic. Godolphin's €260,000 Arqana Select yearling was steadied to race in fourth after the break and remained there through halfway. Looming large at the quarter-mile marker, he was shaken up for control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out on the climb to the line to assert by 1 1/4 lengths from G3 Horris Hill S. third Tacarib Bay (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) for a second stakes triumph.

“We were disappointed in Meydan when he got beat, but we have been there before and were confident he would come forward and he has,” commented Charlie Appleby. “He is a set model and has got some good 2-year-old form which, thankfully, he has brought to the table this afternoon. I was pleased with his homework, Paul Eddery rides him at home, and I have to give credit to the team as he has very shallow feet and had very poor growth on them. He has been back here the last two weeks and we were confident that run in Dubai brought him forward coming into today.” Looking ahead to the possibility of skipping the track's G1 2000 Guineas at the beginning of next month, the trainer added, “I'm not going to be bold and say he will see out a mile as he has shown a lot of pace there. Personally, I think he is a tailor-made [Royal Ascot G3] Jersey horse.”

New Science is the fourth of five foals and one of two scorers produced by G2 Park Hill S. and G3 Lillie Langtry S. placegetter Alta Lilea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dual stakes-placed Mistress Quickly (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Listed Feilden S. runner-up Fighter Boy (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to a 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB). Descendants of his G2 Prix de l'Opera-winning third dam Mona Stella (Nureyev), herself kin to MG1SW G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), include G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Special Quest (Fr) (Rainbow Quest).

Gestut Ammerland Continuing With Reduced Numbers

Dietrich von Boetticher's famed Gestut Ammerland is undergoing a reduction in scale but is not, as reported this week in the German press, ceasing business completely. As part of that process, the owner/breeder's neighbouring farm on Lake Starnberg, Gestut Bernried, will close from the end of May.

“It's very much an official reduction, he is not stopping breeding,” said an Ammerland representative. “He's been selling more yearlings and reducing the stock over a number of years. The idea is to bring the operation down from around 50 to about a dozen mares.”

For more than 30 years, von Boetticher has been one of Germany's elite breeders and has enjoyed significant success on the international stage. His Bavarian farm has produced such great names as dual French Classic winner and leading sire Lope De Vega (Ire) (Shamardal), Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), and German Derby and Coronation Cup winner Boreal (Ger) (Java Gold). He was also the co-breeder of another Arc winner, Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), with Newsells Park Stud and Coolmore.

Now 80, von Boetticher bought the picturesque Gestut Ammerland in southern Germany in 1989, the year after winning the German Derby with Luigi (Ger) (Home Guard), the first racehorse he bought. That same season von Boetticher also celebrated a one-two in the Preis der Diana (German Oaks) with Alte Zeit (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}) and Britannia (Ger) (Tarim {GB}). The latter went on to become a cornerstone of his breeding programme, producing the aforementioned Boreal and the filly Borgia (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), winner of both the German Derby and Grosser Preis von Baden in her homeland as well as the Hong Kong Vase.

Two of Borgia's daughters remain among the 17 mares currently listed as comprising the Ammerland broodmare band. The group also includes three half-sisters to Lope De Vega, the G1 Prix de Diane winner Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and 4-year-old Wildfeder (GB), a full-sister to Walgdeist.

The owner/breeder has a number of horses in training in Germany with Peter Schiergen, and in France with Andre Fabre, including the Classic entrants Sea The Sky (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a full-sister to Sea The Moon (Ger), Safni (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Waldstar (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who is owned in partnership with Newsells Park Stud. The Gestut Ammerland homebred Baltic Bird (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a great-grandson of Borgia, was set to make his debut for John and Thady Gosden at Leicester on Friday.

The eventual cessation of breeding at Bernried, which has stood stallions including Boreal, Ito (Ger) and Iquitos (Ger), has prompted a move to Ireland by Ronald Rauscher. The agent and consignor kept 35 of his own and clients' mares on the farm, including those owned by Dr Christoph Berglar, breeder of international Group 1 winners Protectionist (Ger) and Novellist (Ger).

“The yearlings will move in the first week in April, and then the mares and foals will move at the beginning of June,” said Rauscher, who will be based in Mallow, Co Cork. “All my clients will move out of Bernried to Ireland.”

He added, “I lived in Ireland for 12 years until 1997, so after a 25-year sabbatical I am returning.”

Hypothetical A Dirt Group 1 Winner For Lope De Vega

Hypothetical (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) showed improvement throughout last year's carnival to finish second in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 and fourth in the G1 Dubai World Cup, and the 5-year-old continued his ascent on Saturday with a win in the latest renewal of Round 3 to become the 13th Group 1 winner for his first, and Lope De Vega's first top-level winner on the dirt.

Breaking prominently from his wide gate, Hypothetical was driven forward by Mickael Barzalona and put his head in front as they passed the finish line for the first time. The 2019 GI Preakness S. runner-up and now locally trained Everfast (Take Charge Indy) refused to let Hypothetical get an early lead, however, and dueled with that rival on the rail through the first turn and into the backstretch. Hypothetical at last shook off Everfast midway down the backstretch to lead by a length, with Dubai Icon (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in striking distance on the outside and Remorse (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) poised on the rail. Everfast moved to re-rally and Remorse was driven up the rail as they straightened for home, but Hypothetical had more to give. He held off a persistent Remorse under a drive to win by a length, with Everfast edging out Kafoo (Curlin) for third 6 1/2 lengths back.

A 550,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Hypothetical broke his maiden in his lone start at two in December of 2019 for John Gosden but was soundly beaten in three starts at three, joining Salem bin Ghadayer for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed after finishing last, beaten 39 lengths, in a Doncaster handicap in September of 2020. He had a busy carnival last year, making six starts including a winning debut before his aforementioned Group 1 exploits. Hypothetical beat just two home in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 on Jan. 14, but rebounded to win the G3 Firebreak S. on Feb. 4.

Pedigree Notes

Hypothetical is the second foal out of G3 Prix Fille de l'Air second Peut Etre (Ire) (Whipper), who is a half-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. victress Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and two other stakes-placed horses. They are out of Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who was third in the G3 Prix Miesque. The third dam Zieting (Ire) (Zieten) was a listed winner in the U.S. and France and produced three middle-distance pattern race winners in Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), as well as the dam of G3 Tattersall S. winner La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). It is the further family of the G1 Commonwealth Cup scorer Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and his Group 2-winning and Classic-placed half-brother Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Peut Etre's most recently reported foal is a 3-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) named Pourquoi Pas (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
