Accelerate Gets First Stakes Winner At Woodbine

Having broken his maiden on this same surface and distance Oct. 2 with a 71 Beyer Speed Figure, Hal returned Saturday to Woodbine as the 2-1 second choice–a far cry from his 10-1 morning-line odds. Much as he did Oct. 2, Hal tracked off the pace inside from mid pack before shifting out to the clear as the field passed the quarter pole. He loomed outside of pacesetter Ticker Tape Home and the pair bobbed heads down the lane with Hal gaining only minimal separation on the wire for the win.

Uncle Mo Tops Coolmore Roster at $150,000 for 2023

Uncle Mo will once again top the Coolmore America roster at $150,000 for the 2023 breeding season, the same fee at which he stood in 2022, according to a press release from Coolmore Wednesday morning. The 14-year-old stallion was the sire of 10 black-type winners in 2022, including the GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal.

Justify, who had four black-type winners from his first crop in 2022, will stand for the farm's second highest-fee, at $100,000, the same as in 2022. He is currently the third-leading first-crop sire by earnings.

The largest jump among the Coolmore stallions comes for Munnings. With 13 black-type winners in 2022, including the GI Woody Stephens S. winner Jack Christopher, he gets a hike from his 2022 fee of $85,000 to $100,000 to become the co-second-highest fee on the farm.

American Pharoah, who was the sire of four GI winners in 2022, gets a trim from $80,000 to $60,000.

Mendelssohn, having a strong first year at stud and currently seventh on the first-crop sires list in North America by earnings, will see his fee drop from $35,000 to $25,000.

The farm offers three new stallions in 2023: Corniche, who will stand for $30,000; Preakness winner Early Voting at $25,000; and Golden Pal, whose post-Breeders' Cup retirement was announced Wednesday morning, and will stand alongside his sire, Uncle Mo, at a fee to be determined after the Breeders' Cup.

Breaking Lucky Returns to Blue Star

GSW & MGISP Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky–Shooting Party, by Sky Classic) has returned to Blue Star Racing in Louisiana for the 2023 breeding season. After beginning his stallion career at Blue Star Racing, he moved to Florida for the 2021 and 2022 breeding seasons.

“After many breeder's requests, we're excited to bring Breaking Lucky back to the bayou state,” said Dex Comardelle of Blue Star Racing. “It's no secret Louisiana is one of the most lucrative breeding programs in the country, and with the recent passage of sports betting and Historical racing, we expect Louisiana purses to increase exponentially over the coming years. Now is the time to double down on Louisiana breeding.”

Winner of the GIII Seagram Cup S. and Prince of Wales S., Breaking Lucky placed in several Grade I events and retired with a record of 27-4-6-6 and earnings of $1,196,376.

Shahama Remains Unbeaten In Three Starts With Friday’s UAE 1,000 Guineas Score

KHK Racing's Shahama is three for three and a stakes winner after a 3 3/4-length victory in the $150,000 UAE 1,000 Guineas on Friday at Meydan. The 3-year-old daughter of Munnings, a half sister to champion Lookin At Lucky, relaxed in the early going, rallied to take command inside the quarter pole and cruised home from there.

“I was very impressed,” said jockey Adrie De Vries. “The race went totally different than I expected; I thought there would be a really strong pace with three sprinters in there but they all had the same plan. I wanted to take the pace out, which the outside draw helped me do and got me in a handy position. From there it was only a question of pushing the button and she answered every question.

“There's plenty left in the tank. She's only doing what you ask her to do and I haven't got serious with her yet.”

Trained by Fawzi Nass, she has earned $133,484 to date. After speeding an Under Tack quarter in :21 flat, she was purchased for $425,000 by her trainer out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2021 OBS April Sale.

While the Saudi Derby might be tempting, connections are leaning towards staying in Dubai with the daughter of Munnings. The Group 3 UAE Oaks looks the next step towards possibly taking on colts in the Group 2 UAE Derby.

“The Oaks looks the obvious next race,” added De Vries. “I'm not afraid about going further; any distance up to a mile and a quarter will suit her.”
