Equinox Ascends To Top of Longines WBRR

Japanese horses have readily left their marks at racetracks in the Middle East over the first three months of 2023, and accordingly, the nation is now home to the top-rated gallopers in the world on both turf and dirt according to the latest edition of the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings (WBRR) that was made public Thursday.

On the strength of his mesmerising front-running victory in the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Mar. 25, Silk Racing's Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) has been assigned a rating of 129, four points clear of dual Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) and five better than his compatriot Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), who made a splashy return to the races of his own with an eight-length demolition of the G2 Nikkei Sho hours before Equinox's effort in Dubai. The G1 Takarazuka Kinen in June could bring together the two Japanese rivals, while Golden Sixty is ticketed for the G1 FWD Champions Mile at Sha Tin Apr. 30.

Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) capped a Japanese three-timer at Meydan with a late-running defeat of Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal, 118) in the G1 Dubai World Cup and is rated the best dirt horse in the world on 122, sharing that spot with Hong Kong's California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and recent G1 Queen Elizabeth S. victor Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}), each of whom is also set to appear on Champions Day at Sha Tin in a bit more than two weeks.

Lucky Sweynesse (NZ) (Sweynesse {Aus}) defeated California Spangle in the G1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup last month and is a joint-fourth in the WBRR alongside fellow Hong Konger Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) on a rating of 123. Both runners also have Champions Day engagements.

The Peter Moody-trained I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) is the top Australian-based runner in the WBRR, having been given a rating of 121 and honours as the world's top-rated turf sprinter for his victory in the G1 T J Smith S. over heavy Randwick turf Apr. 1. The 4-year-old is one point clear of nine-time Group 1 winner Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss).

Art Collector (Bernardini) remains America's top-rated horse on 121 for his GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. heroics and is just ahead of Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Elite Power (Curlin), who sits on 120 for his victory earlier this season in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint.

Golden Sixty The Golden Child Of The Longines WBRR

Dual Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) has been given a mark of 125 to top the latest version of the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings.

The gelding ran out a one-length winner of the G1 Stewards' Cup, defeating Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) (123), with California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) (122) in third. Golden Sixty then padded his record with a head tally over Romantic Warrior in the G1 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup.

GI Pegasus World Cup hero Art Collector (Bernardini) has been ranked at 121, equal to G3 Neom Turf Cup hero Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Four horses share a mark of 120 including Elite Power (Curlin), who won the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint; Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), successful in the G1 Saudi Cup defeating Country Grammer (Tonalist) (119), Café Pharoah (American Pharoah) (118) and Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) (118); crack Australian sprinter Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss) (120), and Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) (120).

London Will Host Longines World Racing Awards Once Again

The in-person 2022 Longines World Racing Awards will be held at Banqueting House in London, England on Jan. 17, 2023, the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) announced on Friday. The 10th edition of the ceremony will honour the highest-rated horses in the 2022 Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings as well as the Longines World's Best Horse Race. Connections of the winners will receive Longines timepieces.

The Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings are established by international handicappers according to the performance of the horses in top races. The highest-rated race is determined by averaging the rankings of the first four placed horses. The full list and further information on the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings are both available on the IFHA website.

“Over the past year racing fans have been thrilled by some remarkable athletic performances across the globe,” said Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chair of the IFHA. “Together with our partner Longines, the International Federation is excited to honour those horses which have excelled on the world stage through our World's Best Racehorse Awards and to also celebrate the World's Best Horse Race.”

Flightline on Top of the World

Flightline (Tapit) (139), who closed out his undefeated career in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, maintains his commanding lead in the ninth edition of the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2022.

In the Breeders' Cup Classic, Flightline pulled away from the field to win by a record 8 1/4 lengths. Olympiad (Speightstown) (124) was second, while Taiba (Gun Runner) (123) was another half-length back in third.

Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) (122) also impressed during the Breeders' Cup World Championships and joins the rankings following his 2 1/2-length win the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf. It was his fifth consecutive victory and third at the highest level.

Meanwhile, both Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) (123) and Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) (121) find themselves ranked following their dramatic efforts in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn). Equinox ran down the front-running Panthalassa to win by a length in that contest.

Additionally, Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) (122) improved his rating to 122 from 120 after defeating Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (121) by a half-length in the G1 Qipco Champion S. My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) (121) was a nose back in third, while Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (135) was fourth.

The next edition of the rankings will be released in January 2023.
