Catalogue Released For The 2024 Texas Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale

The catalog for the 2024 Texas Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, set for Wednesday, Apr. 3 beginning at 10 a.m. ET in the Lone Star Park Sales Pavilion, is out, the Texas Thoroughbred Association said in a release Wednesday.

The breeze show is scheduled for Monday, Apr. 1 on Lone Star's main track, starting at 8 a.m. ET.

“This is a solid, quality group of two-year-olds coming to our sale,” Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Director Foster Bridewell said. “We have an array of national and regional stallions represented in the book and stakes-quality pedigrees to match.”

Juveniles by Bolt d'Oro, Frosted, Game Winner, Global Campaign, Instagrand, Jimmy Creed, Medaglia d'Oro, Mitole, More Than Ready, Twirling Candy, Vino Rosso, and Violence are catalogued this year, as well as regional stallions like Aurelius Maximus, Cinco Charlie, Competitive Edge, My Golden Song, Star Guitar and Too Much Bling.

“We have two-year-olds by well-known stallions, out of stakes winners, and half siblings to stakes runners currently on tracks around the area and nation,” Bridewell said. “We're thrilled to have this opportunity to showcase these horses in April at Lone Star Park and we're grateful to our breeders, owners, and consignors for trusting in us to put on a quality sale.”

Lone Star Meet to Feature 21 Stakes Worth $2.8 Million

Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie will begin the 2024 Thoroughbred Racing Season on Thursday, Apr. 18 and conclude on Sunday, July 14. The season will encompass 41 race days, featuring 21 stakes worth a total of $2.8 million.

The richest day of the meet, Lone Star Million Day, will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 with over $1.2 million in purses. Six stakes have been scheduled, including the GIII $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile for 3-year-olds and up and the 1 1/16-miles $300,000 Texas Derby.

Texas 2YOs In Training Sale Set For Apr. 3

The 2024 Texas 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale will take place at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie Wednesday, Apr. 3, 2024, with the under-tack preview set for Monday, Apr. 1.

“We're excited to follow up our solid 2023 sale with our 2024 edition of our Texas 2-Year-Old Sale,” TTA Sales Director Foster Bridwell said. “We continue to pursue quality offerings that create an attractive marketplace for our buyers in the region.”

Recent graduates of the sale include Norman Stables' Strong Promise (Broken Vow), who fetched $125,000 at this year's sale and has since gone on to earn better than $216,000 with stakes victories at Lone Star, Delta Downs and Louisiana Downs. Blue Squall (Tapwrit), who topped the auction at $300,000, has been second in maiden allowance company at Churchill Downs in her first two starts.

“Our graduates are competing both locally and nationally and show the type of athletes our consignors have offered each year,” Bridewell said. “We're already working on putting together another solid catalog for our 2024 sale.”

Eyes Fixed On Texas Yearling Sale At Lone Star Park

At 271 head, one of the largest catalogs in its history, the Texas Thoroughbred Association's (TTA) single-session Yearling Sale will be held Monday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. (CT) at Lone Star Park Sales Pavilion.

The 2022 edition, which reported a buy-back rate of 24%, saw 161 yearlings out of 211 sell for a total of $3,416,000–up almost 6% from the previous year when 177 out of 228 grossed $3,229,600. Growth was also seen in last year's average of $21,217, an increase from $18,246 in 2021, while the median was $13,500, up from $10,000 the year prior.

Based on current trends, Mary Ruyle, the Executive Director of the TTA, is banking on the Texas racing and sales landscape continuing to blossom.

“The Texas Thoroughbred Association is very optimistic–particularly given the strong catalog for the upcoming Yearling Sale which includes what is likely the best group of Texas-bred yearlings offered,” Ruyle said. “Every horse that passes through the ring at this sale will be eligible for the $150,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star Park in 2024 and either the $100,000 Derby or Oaks at Sam Houston Race Park in 2025. The Derby and Oaks were run for the first time this year and were very well received.”

First made available in 2020, funds from the Horse Industry Escrow Account have been used to increase purses in Texas and provide additional Accredited Texas-Bred incentive awards to breeders, owners and trainers.

“We expect to have a good crowd in attendance and we will again have online bidding available for approved buyers. A break from our never-ending heat wave would be most appreciated,” said Ruyle.

For the second year in a row, Highlander Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility just south of Sulphur Springs outside of Dallas, Texas, is represented at the sale. This year's draft is made up of 36 yearlings, stabled in Barn E3 at Lone Star.

“We had the $100,000 sales topper last year with Too Much Kiki [Too Much Bling] who ended up winning a stakes this past season at Lone Star,” said Highlander CEO, Jeff Hooper. “Foster Bridewell, who coordinates and runs the sale for the TTA, has been able to really bring in a good mix of buyers and we saw several top pinhookers from Ocala, plus some others from around the country, at this sale.”

Out of the Highlander consignment, Hooper said that hip 149, a Louisiana-bred colt by Unified out of Mirabeau (Bind), will be among those to watch.

“He's the first foal out of a very fast young stakes-winning mare,” said Hooper. “He has a lot a class and walks like a panther. I think he will be very popular with both pinhookers, as well as people looking to buy to race.”
