Gamble For Grayson Handicapping Challenge Between Little Red Feather Racing, Equibase

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation announced today that it has partnered with Little Red Feather Racing and Equibase Company for the Gamble for Grayson Handicapping Challenge.

The handicapping contest will take place November 28-29 and span five graded stakes races that are scheduled to be held that weekend at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Representatives from Little Red Feather and Equibase will have a $500 bankroll, of which $100 must be played on each of the specified races on win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, or superfecta wagers. At the end of the weekend, all remaining bankroll and winnings will be donated to Grayson.

“We thank Little Red Feather and Equibase for recognizing the importance of equine veterinary research,” said Jamie Haydon, president of Grayson. “Grayson's previous handicapping challenges for charity at Indiana Grand and with The Stronach Group were rousing successes, and we appreciate the interest from other organizations to participate in similar contests to benefit our foundation.”

The team representing Little Red Feather is Gary Fenton, managing partner of Little Red Feather; and Kenny Mayne, sports journalist for ESPN. The Equibase team is composed of Christina Blacker, TVG host, reporter, and analyst; and Ellis Star, national racing analyst for Equibase.

“Little Red Feather prioritizes the health and wellness of our racehorses, and Grayson-funded research enables us and all horse owners to ensure that our horses are receiving the best care at all stages of their lives,” said Fenton. “Along with Kenny Mayne, I am excited to put my handicapping skills to the test on behalf of Little Red Feather to raise money for such an important cause.”

“Our team at Equibase is poised for the Grayson gambling challenge and supporting the foundation's work,” said Jason Wilson, president and chief operating officer of Equibase. “I am confident that Christina's and Ellis' handicapping prowess combined with Equibase's handicapping tools will make for an exciting competition with Little Red Feather, and, most importantly, a successful weekend for Grayson and their important work.”

The races that have been selected for the Gamble for Grayson Handicapping Challenge are the grade 1 Hollywood Derby and Matriarch Stakes, the grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap, and the grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes and Cecil B. Demille Stakes.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is traditionally the nation's leading source of private funding for equine medical research that benefits all breeds of horses. Since 1983, the foundation has provided more than $29.1 million to fund 384 projects at 45 universities in North America and overseas. Additional information about the foundation is available at grayson-jockeyclub.org.

Little Red Feather Racing Hires Compliance Consultant To Oversee Operations

In what is presumed to be the first hire of its kind, Little Red Feather Racing (LRF), California's largest horse racing syndicate, on Tuesday announced the hiring of an independent compliance consultant to oversee all aspects of its racing and sales divisions. The consultant will ensure that LRF's trainers, veterinarians, and staffs comply within regulatory rules as well as LRF's internal policies regarding training and medication.

“Many industries have compliance managers, why not horse ownership?” said LRF Managing Partner Gary Fenton. “We want our partners to have the utmost confidence and trust that our equine athletes receive world-class care.”

“It's time we take a long hard look at everything we provide to our equine athletes,” said LRF Founder and Managing Partner Billy Koch, “Current training practices need to evolve with changing times.”

Effective immediately, Tom McCrocklin will serve as compliance consultant for the LRF team and report directly to Fenton and Koch.

Born in Baton Rouge, La., McCrocklin has an undergraduate degree from LSU and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, specializing in equine from Louisiana Tech. McCrocklin trained at east coast race tracks until 1992 where he moved to Ocala, Fla., to commence a breaking/training/sales operation, representing some of the biggest names in the industry.

McCrocklin will review veterinarian and training bills as well as regularly visit each LRF barn.  He will work alongside LRF's trainers and vets to create a universal set of protocols.  “Since I am a trainer and understand the culture and mentality, I look forward to working with my colleagues to create a methodology that is positive for everyone,” said McCrocklin. “Most trainers want to learn and try less medications and supplements; they just need the educational and support tools to do so.”

“Too often we hear discussion about a problem in our industry, yet rarely is there a solution posed,” said Jim Gagliano, president of The Jockey Club. “Today is not that day. We applaud LRF for taking this innovative step and showing that owners can and will take measures to ensure best practices are being met within our industry.”

Formed in 2002, LRF and its sister company Solana Beach Sales (SBS) are California's largest syndicate, managing nearly 100 horses and over 300 active partners. LRF recently concluded a record breaking summer in 2020 with 11 wins at Del Mar from its managed partnerships, including wins in the G2 Del Mar Handicap – a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In race – with Red King, and the G2 John C Mabee Stakes with Raymundos Secret. LRF campaigned Breeders' Cup Winner Singletary and G1 winners Egg Drop, Secret Spice, Fault, Mirth and stallion Midnight Storm. Red King Holds Off United With Rispoli’s Perfectly Timed Ride In Del Mar Handicap

Jockey Umberto Rispoli rolled the dice, making a six-wide move toward the lead aboard Red King with a half-mile to go in Saturday's Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, then had just enough left to hold off the late charge of odds-on favorite United and Flavien Prat in the 1 3/8-mile turf fixture at the seaside track north of San Diego.

The victory in the $200,000 race gave Red King – owned by Little Red Feather, Gordon Jacobsen and Philip Belmonte – an automatic, fees-paid berth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 7 as part of the “Win and You're In” Challenge Race Series that also provides a travel allowance to winning horses traveling to Kentucky.

Trained by Phil D'Amato, Red King covered 1 3/8 miles on firm turf in 2:15.75, winning for the seventh time in 28 lifetime starts. This was his second stakes win since D'Amato claimed him for $25,000 in February 2019. Earlier this year the English Channel 6-year-old horse won the 1 3/4-mile, G3 San Juan Capistrano at Santa Anita.

United finished second, with Originaire closing for third and Proud Pedro fourth in the field of 11 older runners.

Red King paid $10.60.

Longshots Big Buzz and Ward 'n Jerry carved out the slow early fractions, going :25.07, :49.94 and 1:15.09 for the first six furlongs. Rispoli swung Red King to the outside in the run down the backstretch, moving toward the leaders after a mile in 1:40.07. He took command from North County Guy at the top of the stretch, opened up a lead and just lasted over United for the win.

“I didn't like how slow they were going, so I decided to move earlier today,” said Rispoli. “It takes a really good horse to do that, but I knew he had the stamina. I did this when I was riding in Europe. It was close at the finish because he was trying to pull h imself up. I am very happy. This horse gave me a Grade 3 win in his last start, and today he gave me a Grade 2. I want to keep it going with him.”

The stakes win was the seventh of the meet for Rispoli, riding his first seaon at Del Mar. It was the first of the meet for D'Amato but his fourth straight (and sixth of the last seven) in the Del Mar Handicap. He now has 27 stakes wins at Del Mar.

“I could see going along the backstretch Flavien (on United) was on the inside and Umberto was about to make that move on the outside. (Rispoli) timed in perfectly. I give all the credit to him. After the last race he was so high on this horse. He chose Red King over Originaire and that gave me a lot of confidence that he felt the horse was climbing up the ladder and to win this race is really special.”

Beat Ray At Del Mar: A Little Red Feather In My Cap?

After nosing out TVG analyst Christina Blacker last week when Collusion Illusion held off Lexitonian in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, my friends at Del Mar rounded up a confidence builder in Little Red Feather managing partner Billy Koch for this Saturday's edition of the Beat Ray online handicapping contest.

It's the equivalent of going up against Grade 1 competition and then dropping into an entry-level allowance race.

I'm only kidding, of course. Billy, who grew up on the mean streets of Beverly Hills, was reading the Daily Racing Form instead of See Spot Run as a toddler and cutting kindergarten classes to go racing at Hollywood Park with his movie mogul grandfather, Howard Koch. He never left the track, turning his passion for the game into a career, founding Little Red Feather Racing partnerships that he now manages with Gary Fenton.

This week's contest race is the G2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes, the ninth of 11 on Saturday. First post is 2 p.m. PT, and the Yellow Ribbon is scheduled to go at 6:10 p.m. PT.

Billy will join fellow handicapper Michelle Yu and me on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT on Del Mar's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) to handicap the Yellow Ribbon, whose seven-horse field includes last year's winner, the Irish-bred Beau Recall, trained by Brad Cox. Tune in to hear our handicapping strategies and bets for the contest.

Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar summer meet. It's free to play and you can sign up here. Bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses.  At the end of the meet, the player with the highest bankroll from those wagers becomes the “Beach Boss” and wins two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Other prizes are available to top finishers and anyone who finishes ahead of me is entered in a drawing for even more prizes.

Every Saturday, a racing or sports celebrity will be a guest handicapper for the contest race.
