Kitty Rose First Black Type Winner For Invincible Army As Irish Champions Day Kicks Off

The Irish Champions Festival began with a renewal of Leopardstown's Listed Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle S. which may prove better than its status in time as two class acts dominated proceedings throughout. While Ballydoyle's 13-8 favourite Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) did her thing by going fast in front and keeping at it, Natalia Lupini's Kitty Rose (GB) (Invincible Army {Ire}–Varnish {GB}, by Choisir {Aus}) had too many guns from over a furlong out and stretched to an impressive 2 1/2-length success under Billy Lee. In doing so, the 3-1 second favourite who had made an instant splash for owners Nigel O'Hare, Gary Devlin and the Kabin Racing Syndicate in a decent maiden at Naas last month provided her first-season sire with his initial black-type winner.

For Milan-born and Co. Down-based Lupini, the win was a landmark moment in her fledgling training career. The winner, a 20,000gns Tatts Book 3 bargain, beat the smart yardstick Tannola (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) decisively on debut in the race that the stable's Highly Desirable (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) had been third in last year before going on to finish in the same spot in this race. “She's a big filly, very honest and when she gets into a rhythm she gallops towards the line. She gives it all,” she said. “The lads were looking at the Guineas next year. She'll be a stronger filly and she won't have any problems over a mile.”

“We'll see how she comes out of this race and we'll talk to the owners and see what they would like to do,” the trainer, who is expecting a child in October, added. “We would like to give her a bit of time in the winter to fill out. She's a big filly and will benefit from a winter break. She'll be a nice three-year-old and we're very much looking forward to having her next year. Hopefully we'll get to train her.”

Like the card's G2 Solonaway S. winner Flight Plan (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Kitty Rose hails from the family of Whitewater Affair (GB) (Machiavellian). She is currently the last known foal out of the dam Varnish (GB) (Choisir {Aus}), a grandaughter of that G2 Prix de Pomone winner's half-sister White House (GB) (Pursuit Of Love {GB}) who produced the G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Eldalil (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and who is the second dam of the G3 Round Tower S.-winning sire Cappella Sansevero (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who was third in the G1 Phoenix S.

Kodiac’s Zarinsk Makes All In The Ingabelle

Irish Champions Weekend got under way with Leopardstown's €100,000 Listed Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle S. over seven furlongs, for 2-year-old fillies, which went the way of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane for a second straight edition after Juddmonte's Zarinsk (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Pavlosk, by Arch) posted a 2 1/2-length success from Library (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Zarinsk, who backed up a May 22 debut success at the Curragh with a fourth in the G2 Airlie Stud S. back there the following month, was unable to feature at the business end of July's G3 Silver Flash S. over this course and distance when stumbling badly at the start and gained compensation with a pillar-to-post victory here. Breaking sharply to seize immediate control, she was shaken up when threatened by her closest pursuer Library passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly under mild urging thereafter to hold that rival with plenty to spare for a career high.

“Our fillies have been pretty precocious this year, they have all won their maidens well and she is still a work-in-progress,” said trainer Ger Lyons. “Colin [Keane] is quite confident about her getting a mile, I'll have to talk to the owners and I could see us putting her away until next year. We do a lot of work in the stalls with our horses at home and our modus [operandi] is don't take away any advantage. Wherever they bounce you ride them from and he's kept it simple. She's not overly big, but has a lovely big stride and has a lot of maturing to do. It's the biggest weekend of the year for us guys in Ireland, it's a very special day and there is always a good buzz to it.” Keane added, “We would have taken a lead, but we got it on our own terms and we went nice, even fractions. I thought we picked up well from the bottom of the straight, she ran through the line and I couldn't pull her up. She's a lovely actioned filly, her stride is very long and she's a very willing filly.”

Zarinsk, who becomes the 81st black-type winner for her sire (by Danehill), is the first stakes scorer out of Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. victrix Pavlosk (Arch), herself a full-sister to Listed Prix Casimir Delamarre winner Rostova. Pavlosk is also a half-sister to the dual Group 3-winning G1 Gran Premio di Milano third Exhibit One (Silver Hawk), herself the dam of G3 Chunichi Shimbun Hai victor Maitres d'Art (Jpn) (Zenno Rob Roy {Jpn}) and Listed Sandringham H. runner-up Auction (Ire) (Mr. Greeley). Zarinsk's third dam Bold Empress (Diesis {GB}) is kin to multiple Group 1-winning sire Zafonic (Mr. Prospector) while her descendants also include stakes-winning G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches second Irish Rookie (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), G2 Maurice Lacroix Trophy victrix Daring Love (Ger) (Big Shuffle) and last week's G2 Oettingen-Rennen scorer Dapanago (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Pavlosk has a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a weanling full-sister to Zarinsk to come.

Fastnet Rock’s Monday Makes All in the Ingabelle

Coolmore’s once-raced Monday (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who posted a Sept. 3 debut fourth over this seven-furlong trip at Punchestown in her only prior start, stepped forward to shed maiden status in Saturday’s Listed Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle S. at Leopardstown. She was smartly away from an inside gate and dictated at a modest tempo along the fence after the initial strides of this black-type bow. Unflustered until scrubbed along off the home turn, the 12-1 chance refused to buckle and kept on strongly under a final-furlong drive to hold No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) by 3/4-of-a-length with A Taad Moody (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) 1 1/2 lengths back in third.

“She’s the first foal out of Ballydoyle and we thought she was very nice the first day, but she just found Punchestown a bit unusual around those bends,” explained winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. “She probably learned a lot the first day, the ground is lovely and she learned a good bit more today. I’d say she won’t have any problem stepping up quick to a Group race. The [G1 Prix Marcel] Boussac at ParisLongchamp], the [G1] Fillies’ Mile [at Newmarket] and all those races will be open to her.”

Monday, half-sister to a yearling colt by War Front and a weanling filly by Justify, is the first of three foals out of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to MG1SW distaffer Misty For Me (Ire) and MGSP Listed Hurry Harriet S. victress Twirl (Ire). Misty For Me produced three pattern-race winners, most notably MG1SW sire U S Navy Flag (War Front) and three-time Group 1 winner Roly Poly (War Front), and her unraced dam Butterfly Cove (Storm Cat) is a full-sister to G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial S. winner Kamarinskaya and a half to MG1SW sire Fasliyev (Nureyev).
