LINCOLN TESORO (c, 3, Carpe Diem–Santa Vindi, by Vindication), a half-brother to GSW Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat), graduated first off a five-month absence over track and distance Dec. 19 (video, gate 6) and was a sound third in his first start against winners Jan. 23. The $75K Keeneland September acquisition is out of a daughter of MGSW Santa Catalina (Cure the Blues), the dam of GISW Golden Missile (A.P. Indy). Santa Vindi was purchased for $150K with this colt in utero at KEENOV in 2017. B-Stonehaven Steadings (KY)

Godolphin's JOYOUS CHANT (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Sweet Chant, by Distorted Humor) debuted with a respectable fifth-place effort in a nine-furlong turf event for newcomers at Tokyo Feb. 6 and switches to the dirt for this second go. A $140K purchase as a weanling at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, the chestnut is out of a half-sister to Campanologist (Kingmambo), who carried the Godolphin bl ue to multiple Group 1 successes in Germany and Italy and pattern scores in England and in the UAE. Joyous Chant is bred on a variant of the El Prado (Ire) cross over Distorted Humor that has been responsible for the likes of Hong Kong superstar Golden Sixty (Aus), and US Grade I winners Elate and New Money Honey. 4th-NKY, ¥9,680,000 ($90k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
ERIE TESORO (f, 3, California Chrome–Celtic Chant, by Songandaprayer), a $130K KEENOV weanling turned $235K KEESEP yearling, has one run under her belt, a well-beaten fifth going this distance at Chukyo Jan. 30. The chestnut is out of a stakes-winning dam who has already bred GSP Irish Mischief (Into Mischief). The filly's third dam produced GISW Vicar (Wild Again), GSW Navesink River (Unbridled) and SW Sheepscot (Easy Goer), the dam of French Classic winner Astronomer Royal (Danzig). CAL FRAGRANCE (f, 3, California Chrome–Right There, by Eskendereya), a $180K purchase out of last year’s Keeneland September sale, is the first foal from her dam, a stakes winner and third to Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) in the 2015 GI Chandelier S. Right There, who was purchased by Perry and Denise Martin for $325K at KEENOV in 2016, is a daughter of Elrose (Deputy Minister), the dam of GSW & GISP turfer Super Freaky (Smart Strike). Third dam Bonnie’s Poker (Poker) produced GI Kentucky Derby hero Silver Charm. B-Perry & Denise Martin (KY)

LINCOLN TESORO (c, 2, Carpe Diem–Santa Vindi, by Vindication) was beaten nearly 10 lengths into eighth in a 1200-meter newcomers’ event on turf June 21, but switches to the dirt track for this second go. He is bred to adapt, as his half-brother Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat) won the GIII Jerome S., while his multiple Grade III-winning second dam Santa Catalina (Cure the Blues) was responsible for GI Pimlico Special H. hero Golden Missile (A.P. Indy). Lincoln Tesoro was a $75K KEESEP grad. B-Stonehaven Steadings (KY)

2nd-HSN, ¥9,680,000 ($90k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
KARNTNER (c, 3, Street Sense–Sweet Dreams, by Candy Ride {Arg}), a $210K KEENOV weanling, had the misfortune of catching rain-affected surfaces in his first two trips postward and exits a respectable fifth over course and distance June 13. His dam, multiple stakes-placed on synthetic tracks, is out of a daughter of turf SW/GSP Cat Charmer (Storm Cat), the dam of three-time winning turf mare Strike Charmer (Smart Strike). The deeper female family includes champion Gold Beauty (Mr. Prospector), Dayjur (Danzig), Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and in-form sire Violence (Medaglia d’Oro). B-Buscar Stables Inc (KY)

Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: June 20 & 21, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Hanshin Racecourses. The most important race of the weekend takes place Sunday at Toyko, which plays host to the G3 Unicorn S., one of two new races on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. Four US-bred and one US-conceived sophomores are among the field of 16 for the 1600-meter test, which will be previewed in Saturday’s TDN:

7th-HAK, ¥14,360,000 ($134k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1000m
ISSHIN (c, 3, Take Charge Indy–Appealing Stella, by Closing Argument), a debut third over 1200 meters in December, shortened up to this trip and made nearly every yard of the running to graduate by eight lengths the following month (see below, gate 11). Exiting a close fourth back over six furlongs in March, the $15K Keeneland November weanling, $32K KEESEP buyback and $100K OBS March breezer should take all the beating. 8th-HSN, ¥14,360,000 ($134k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1600mT
LOTUS LAND (f, 3, Point of Entry–Little Miss Muffet, by Scat Daddy) was a debut winner over course and distance last September and has since finished second in two of three starts, including a near-miss when trying 1800 meters at Toyko off a December layoff May 23 (video, gate 7). Hailing from the deeper female family of the now Japan-domiciled US GISW Gozzip Girl (Dynaformer), Lotus Land will be suited by this drop back to the mile and over a track with a more abbreviated run to the wire than at Toyko.
