Titans Square off in Pegasus World Cup

When a racetrack musters a $3-million purse for a featured event, the hope is that racing's stars will attend the big dance. And this year's GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. certainly succeeded in attracting two of the biggest names–Knicks Go (Paynter) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief)–in the American handicap division.

Knicks Go, a 2 3/4-length winner in last year's Pegasus World Cup, finished fourth in the G1 Saudi Cup and GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. before reeling off four-straight wins, including the GI Whitney S. and in his latest race, the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 6. Knicks Go was named the 2021 Longines World' Best Racehorse during a virtual ceremony at the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket, England Tuesday.

“The Breeders' Cup Classic was his biggest race he's had to date,” said trainer Brad Cox. “He's going to go to Taylor Made after the Pegasus to become a stallion. After the Classic, we had decided if he came out of the race in good order, which he did, we would pursue the Pegasus. He has trained as well as he did going into the Classic.”

He continued, “After the [Saudi Cup] last year, he was fresh and came back and didn't run as well as we had hoped in the Met Mile. Personally, I think that had a lot to do with that race being around one turn. He has not had a lot of time off, and that's very similar to what we did with the [2020 GI Breeders' Cup] Dirt Mile and last year's Pegasus. So, we have pretty much kept him on the same routine. He went over to Taylor Made for three to four days to be shown to potential breeders and was shown on a shank. Aside from that, he's been training the whole time. He's been doing well, his weight is great and his attitude is good. And he's been training great and his works have been phenomenal.”

The striking grey was installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite in a field of nine older horses after drawing the one hole Tuesday. Joel Rosario has the call.

“We're not really going to deviate from what we've done in the past,” affirmed Cox. “[Life Is Good] is a very fast, brilliant horse. We're not going to let him have his own way, and I think he's probably not going to let us have our own way. We're going to break running, hopefully, get to the lead. We're going to be very aggressive to get him there.”

He added, “It's the same approach we took in the Breeders' Cup. We'll see how it goes. He's proven at a mile and an eighth and he does like the surface there. He likes the configuration of the racetrack there at Gulfstream–he proved that last year. We're just going to come out of there running and see what happens.”

China Horse Club and WinStar Farm are represented by Life Is Good, who has done very little wrong in his career, winning four of five graded attempts, including a tour-de-force victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar last November. Under the guidance of Bob Baffert, the powerful bay became a 'TDN Rising Star' with a 9 1/2-length score at Del Mar in the fall of 2020 before returning the following spring to annex the GIII Sham S. and GII San Felipe S.–defeating subsequent GI Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit (Protanico) on both of those occasions.

“He came to us with high expectations, and he had a great resume,” said trainer Todd Pletcher of Life Is Good's arrival. “Initially, we were just getting to know him and see how he trains. He trained exceptionally well, so we had high hopes for him.”

After joining the Pletcher string, the $525,000 KEESEP yearling graduate came up a neck short to Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) in the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at Saratoga. With Irad Ortiz Jr. taking over riding duties for the Sept. 25 GII Kelso H. at Belmont, the sophomore drubbed older rivals for the first time to win by 5 1/2 lengths and came back with an even more sparkling performance when winning for fun on Breeders' Cup Day.

“We were unlucky in the Allen Jerkens to be beaten that day, but we mapped out a course at that point and we felt like the Dirt Mile was the correct race for him,” explained Pletcher. “The Kelso seemed like a good race to bridge the gap between the Jerkens and the Dirt Mile and I worked out well for him. Since that, we've been focused on this race. And we're going great.

“Knicks Go is a very fast horse. We know that. But we're not going to alter our style of running. And we're not going to take away his strength, which is his high-cruising speed. I honestly don't know for sure what's going to happen, at least in the first quarter or half, because you are going to have two horses that are looking for the same kind of trip.”

Hoping to pick up the pieces should a speed duel develop up front, 2019 GI Belmont S. victor Sir Winston (Awesome Again) enters the fray off a win in Woodbine's 12-furlong GIII Valedictory S. Dec. 5. Edwin Gonzalez gets the mount for trainer Mark Casse. Also likely to settle just off the pace and hope for a meltdown up front, Stilleto Boy (Shackleford) has hit the board in five of seven stakes races in 2021, including a win in the Iowa Derby and a second in the GI Awesome Again S. He was last seen finishing third in the seven-furlong GI Malibu S. Dec. 26.

Buffolo Joins CHC as Part of Organizational Restructuring

The China Horse Club has accomplished quite a bit in its 10 years of existence. They campaigned a Triple Crown winner, a champion filly and a slew of other Grade I winners. Additionally, they've bred several black-type winners, including top-level scorers Kimari (Munnings) and Valiance (Tapit), and sold multiple seven-figure yearlings. And that is just in the United States. Teo Ah Khing's organization is equally accomplished in Australia and Europe and continuously growing.

Due to this rapid growth and plethora of achievements, the organization has been restructured to better suit the needs of its board, members and partners. Instead of a singular COO, a position previously filled by the U.S.-based Michael Wallace, the China Horse Club now has key representatives in each of its three major regions. The heads of Australasia, Michael Smith, and Europe, Matt Holdsworth, were promoted from within the company, but their U.S. representative is a new hire, Fabricio Buffolo.

“Over the last two years, the world has been heavily impacted by the pandemic and we, quite fluidly, moved our management team around the world,” said Eden Harrington, China Horse Club's Vice President. “One thing we realized in this post-Covid world we are in, is that we do see a heightened importance in having dedicated people in each region to assist our members and partners there, as well as, address and adapt to regional opportunities and issues. We have shifted our structure slightly so we have that focus.”

He continued, “The other component is with the addition of Mr. Fabricio Buffolo, we actually expanded our focus from just the U.S. to all of the Americas because of his background and connections in the Caribbean, Latin America, Central and South America.”

Buffolo started his career in the U.S. with Godolphin. He then served as General Manager of Besilu Stables and most recently held the position of Executive Director of Don Alberto Corporation.

“We reached out to a number of our key partners and people who we respect for opinions and Fabricio was widely promoted,” Harrington said. “The respect that he has held within the industry is very important. Having someone we can tap into of that caliber is not only important for running our operations, but also for maintaining relationships with our partners and our members. To have someone of Fabricio's excellence in not only understanding different markets, but being able to handle high-level relationships is paramount to what we do. Having someone who understands the rich history of Latin America and has relationships down there is also important.”

Buffolo will be responsible for the management of China Horse Club's equine portfolio, including selecting new stock, working with trainers on race plans, matings, accessing which stock should be sold at which sales and managing the growing broodmare band. He will also be tasked with maintaining and growing relationships with the organization's members, partners and vendors.

“The racing and breeding arms have grown and it does require somebody there who is exceedingly talented and vigilant and we certainly believe we have somebody who meets our requirements to that end,” Harrington said. “We also need someone who will access new opportunities. We always want to be on the look out and ahead of the curve.”

Buffolo will represent the China Horse Club for the first time at this weekend's GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational, where their GI Breeders' Cup Dirt mile winner Life is Good (Into Mischief) is set to face off with likely Horse of the Year Knicks Go (Paynter).

“Life is Good will run in the China Horse Club silks this weekend which is fantastic,” said Harrington, who will join Buffolo at Gulfstream, while Teo remains in Australia for the upcoming sale. “We hope he performs at his absolute best and if that allows him to win that is above and beyond. The current plan is he will proceed to the [G1] Dubai World Cup if he comes out in good order. One of our companies Teo Ah Khing Design Consultants designed and built the Meydan grandstand. So to have a lead runner compete in the Dubai World Cup at a facility our group was so instrumental in designing and building would have great meaning.”

Harrington also provided an update on one of the China Horse Club's other key runners Americanrevolution (Constitution). The flashy chestnut concluded a stellar 2021 with a victory in the GI Cigar Mile and is currently getting some R&R before gearing up for his 2022 campaign.

“Americanrevolution went from winning a maiden to being a Grade I winner at the end of the year, so that was exceptional,” Harrington said. “Looking ahead, we would love to have two runners on Breeders' Cup day in 2022 with Life is Good and Americanrevolution. A lot has to go right between now and then, but we believe they are two horses worthy of those aspirations.”

There are nine horses entered in Saturday's $3-million, Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational – the final event on a spectacular 12-race program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

In reality, it really comes down to two horses: defending Pegasus champion Knicks Go, the presumptive Horse of the Year in 2021, and Life Is Good, a once-beaten son of Into Mischief who exits a powerful performance in the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in November on the same day that Knicks Go won the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic.

A poll of Paulick Report readers found a 52-30 margin in favor Knicks Go over Life Is Good to win the Pegasus, with 18% of readers thinking an upset could be in the offing with one of the other seven runners – especially if a pace duel between the two sets things up for a closer.

The Pegasus World Cup will be televised by NBC Sports from 4:40-6 p.m. ET and on NBCSports.com and the streaming Peacock Network. TVG will also have expanded coverage of all 12 Pegasus World Cup Day races that kicks off with an 11:30 a.m. first post.
