TBA Flat Breeders’ Awards Announced

The winners of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Flat Breeders' Awards sponsored by Fitzdares were revealed at Chippenham Park on Sept. 2. Spread across 14 categories, the best of British bloodstock was toasted at the event, which was hosted by Gina Bryce.

The Andrew Devonshire Award, which honours outstanding contribution to the industry went to Lady Emma Balding. She is the wife of former trainer Ian and mother of broadcaster Clare and Classic-winning son Andrew. Also a former TBA Trustee, Lady Balding assisted in the creation of the Retraining of Racehorses charity by obtaining a bequest from the Mellon family. Her Kingsclere Stud has been the birthplace of many stakes winners. Dalham Hall Stud's Ken Crozier won the Dominion Award. He began at the Newmarket stud in 1982.

There were two new awards: the Filly of Merit Award, which went to stakes winner and dual Group 1-placed Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}), and the Barton Stud sponsored Industry Merit Award. Highclere Stud was the recipient of the latter for its new 50/50 and Euro4Euros stallion terms. The Warren family also collected the H J Joel Silver Salver for Flat Broodmare of the Year Beach Frolic (GB) (Nayef), the dam of Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

The TBA Stud Employee Award, sponsored by New England Stud, went to Ron Lott. Gaie Johnson-Houghton, who bred G1 Sussex S. hero Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), was awarded the Langham Cup as the Small Breeder of the Year. After the success of her two Group 2 winners-Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Angel Power (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Anita Wigan received the TBA Silver Salver. Breeders Bearstone Stud were honoured with the TBA Silver Rose Bowl for TBA Flat Breeder of the Year. They enjoyed a win at the Breeders' Cup with homebred Glass Slippers (GB) (Dream Ahead) and Lullaby Moon (GB) (Belardo {Ire}), who won a Group 3 in France.

In addition to the above awards, the statistical awards, which were announced at the beginning of the year, were also presented. Besides winning the Leading British-based Flat Breeder award, Godolphin also celebrated success with flagship stallion Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}) who won both the BBA Silver Cigar Box for leading British-based Flat stallion by earnings and the Barleythorpe Stud Silver Cup, which is given for the leading British-based stallion of individual Flat winners. Rounding out the stallion awards, Adaay (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) earned the Tattersalls Silver Salver as the leading first-season sire in Britain and Mayson (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) received the EBF Stallion Special Merit Award.

TBA Chief Executive Claire Sheppard said, “It has been fantastic to be able to recognise and celebrate the successes of British breeders in person again at tonight's Awards evening. Our sincere congratulations extend not only to the winners but also to all the nominees this evening for their outstanding achievements domestically and on the global stage. We are incredibly grateful to William Woodhams and the team at Fitzdares for their support of British thoroughbred breeding as headline event partner, and to all our event supporters.”

Cable Bay’s Liberty Beach Takes the Temple

Making all on her return in Saturday's G2 Temple S. at Haydock, Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) enjoyed the perfect warm-up for a second tilt at the G1 King's Stand S. in which she was third in 2020. Also third in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix de l'Abbaye when last seen in October, the 13-8 favourite was made to pull out the stops late on by Ainsdale (GB) (Mayson {GB}) but kept finding to score by a neck as Lady In France (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) was half a length away in third. “She's very quick and has won three times first time out,” commented trainer John Quinn, who also saddled the fifth Keep Busy (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). “The two of them are in the [June 15] King's Stand and they'll go there. She had to be tough and she dug deep–as Jason [Hart] said, nothing passed her after the line.”

Successful in the G3 Molecomb S. and runner-up in the G2 Lowther S. as a juvenile, Liberty Beach had taken the Listed Cecil Frail S. over six furlongs here only nine days before her King's Stand effort due to the compressed nature of the pre-Royal Ascot calendar last term. Also second in the G3 Sandown Sprint S. and fourth in the G2 King George S. at Goodwood before her Abbaye sign-off, she has extra time between this prep and her rematch with Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who has had his own problems this Spring. “As you know well, it's nice to get them out and get a run into them,” Quinn added. “Anyone can only do so much at home, so to have a run into both of these is vital really. She has a lot of class and a lot of speed. She could have been unbeaten as a two-year-old. Her last run in the Abbaye was very good. She's won on good-to-firm, good, soft and heavy–both these fillies are very versatile. The two of them are very good.”

Liberty Beach's dam Flirtinaskirt (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}) is kin to three black-type performers including the G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. winner La Rioja (GB) (Hellvelyn {GB}) and the G3 Princess Margaret S. runner-up Pastoral Girl (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}), in turn the dam of the G1 Prix Morny and G2 Mill Reef S. third Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Also connected to the G2 Park Hill S.-winning stayer Eastern Aria (UAE) (Halling), Flirtinaskirt has a yearling filly by Massaat (Ire) to follow.

Breeders’ Cup Mile Likely for Safe Voyage

MGSW Safe Voyage (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}), who won the G2 Boomerange S. at Leopardstown on the first day of Irish Champions Weekend, is a likely starter in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile in November. Trained by John Quinn, the 7-year-old gelding added the Listed Investec Surrey S. to his haul second up on July 4 and was fourth in the G2 Qatar Lennox S. later that month at Goodwood. Back on top in the G2 Sky Bet City of York S. on Aug. 22, the Ross Harmon colourbearer struck at that level again with a narrow victory in the Boomerang on Saturday.

“We’re delighted it just went his way,” said Quinn. “I think he deserved it as he’s so tough and admirable–everything you want in a top-class racehorse. It was his first win over a mile, which is great–it opens up other doors.

“We’ll see how he comes out of the race, but I’m going to work back from the Breeders’ Cup. We can look at the [G1 Prix de la] Foret [on Oct. 4] and the [G1] QEII [on Champions Day at Ascot on Oct. 17], but he’ll only run in one of those, if any. They’re all very good races, but the Breeders’ Cup Mile is the race that appeals the most.”

Quinn also provided an update on listed winner Keep Busy (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and G1SP Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}), second and seventh, respectively, in the G1 Flying Five S. at The Curragh on Sunday. Both horses are eyeing the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye on Arc Day at ParisLongchamp.

“It was a phenomenal run from Keep Busy–she doesn’t know how to run a bad race,” Quinn added. “She got a bump from a horse going backwards and was beaten half a length, but that’s racing and full credit to Kevin and all the connections of the winner.

“Liberty Beach ran a good race as well. She just had no luck in running and was only beaten three lengths. They’re both entered in the Prix de l’Abbaye and if they’re both well, that’s where they’ll go.”
