Fasig-Tipton July Catalog Now Online

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged a total of 348 yearlings for The July Sale, to be held at the auction house's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky, in a single session Tuesday, July 13. The catalog is available for viewing online.

The front cover for the 2021 edition, which is back in its normal position on the calendar after being pushed back to September last year, is adorned with Grade I graduates of The July Sale, including Derby City Distaff heroine Bell's The One (Majesticperfection), recent GI Madison S. winner Kimari (Munnings) and Speech (Mr Speaker), victorious in the 2020 GI Ashland S. Five graded stakes winners from this season appara on the back cover, including Chess's Dream (Jess's Dream), Leinster (Majestic Warrior) and Mighty Mischief (Into Mischief). Just this past weekend, $55,000 July grad Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) led home a Fasig-Tipton sourced trifecta in the GII Brooklyn S. on the GI Belmont S. undercard.

“Fasig-Tipton selected yearling sales return to their traditional spots on the calendar in 2021, starting with a strong renewal of The July Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The sale will begin with the Freshman Sire Showcase–a long-time element of the July Sale that we are reintroducing this year–which will offer the first yearlings by 2021's exciting group of freshman sires. The sale will then transition into the more proven, sire-heavy part of the catalogue. Overall, our 'proven' sire-power has increased again this year.”

Fasig-Tipton is also accepting nominations for the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, which takes place Monday, July 12. Nominations will remain open right up until sale time, but entries are recommended prior to June 18.

“The market for racehorses is very strong right now, and the sale's placement ahead of the lucrative summer race meets make this auction immensely popular with buyers,” Browning noted.

The catalog will also be available via the Equineline catalog app. Print copies will be available beginning June 14.

Letters to the Editor: Rinaldo Del Gallo On Tapit

Sometimes a historical moment has to be pointed out. Australian (GB), Fair Play and Fair Play's son Man O' War each sired three GI Belmont S. winners. Lexington sired four Belmont winners who all won at Jerome Park. Now Tapit joins the illustrious ranks of Lexington.

Like Lexington, Tapit has now sired four winners of the Belmont: Essential Quality, Tapwrit, Creator and Tonalist. Tapit also sired Belmont runners-up Tacitus and Frosted, as well as Belmont third finishers Hofburg and Lani. An asterisk might be added for last year's fluke 2020 Belmont, which was 1 1/8 miles, where Tapit was the grandsire in the race won by Tiz the Law, sired by Tapit's son Constitution.

Broomstick sired three GI Preakness S. winners (and two GI Kentucky Derby winners). Bull Lea had three Kentucky Derby winners, as did Falsetto, Sir Gallahad (Fr) and Virgil. No horse has sired four winners of either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness.

So when we speak of a horse that has sired four horses of an American Classic such as Tapit, this is rarified blood only accomplished by the legendary Lexington.

Lexington Mayor Gorton Proclaims “Tapit Day”

Mayor Linda Gorton proclaimed April 15, 2021 as “Tapit Day” in Lexington, Ky.

Her official proclamation recognized Tapit as one of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the past half century, as well as one of the most valuable horses in America.

The mayor also recognized Gainesway Farm as the well-renowned and historic home of Tapit, founded by John Gaines, and currently owned and operated by Antony Beck, who has made “significant contributions to Thoroughbred breeding and racing, as well as to the city of Lexington.”

“This is a special day for us at Gainesway,” said general manager Brian Graves. “Tapit has obviously been a tremendous asset and part of the Gainesway family. The mayor said she has never known of another horse receiving such a proclamation. It is a great honor and Tapit is very deserving of this recognition.”

Tapit has earned champion sire honors three times during his illustrious stud career. He is the leading active sire in North America by lifetime stakes winners, graded stakes winners, Grade 1 winners, and progeny earnings, which currently are approaching $170 million. In addition to his 27 Grade 1 winners, Tapit has sired seven champions and six Breeders' Cup winners.

McPeek Pointing Lexington Winner King Fury to Derby Or Preakness

Trainer Kenny McPeek said Fern Circle Stables and Three Chimney Farm's King Fury (Curlin) will be pointed to the GI Kentucky Derby or the GI Preakness S. after winning the GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. Saturday at Keeneland. The chestnut returned last night to McPeek's division at Churchill Downs, where he has two wins including the Street Sense S.

With the 20 points he earned in the Lexington, King Fury ranks 28th on the Derby points leaderboard and would need several defections to draw into the May 1 Run for the Roses, which is limited to 20 starters.

“All good; we are real proud of him,” McPeek said. “If his points get him in to the Kentucky Derby, we will probably run. It is his home track and he has won there. If he doesn't get in the Derby, he will run in the [May 15] Preakness. He seems like a horse that is ready to do all that. We will have to see how that ball bounces. It is out of our control, but we will keep his work schedule the same.”

At Aqueduct, trainer Danny Velazquez reported that his graded stakes winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) will also aim for the Preakness after his fifth-place run in the GII Wood Memorial S. Winner of the GII Remsen S. as a 2-year-old, the gelding will also likely use the Apr. 24 Federico Tesio S. at Laurel as further prep for the Triple Crown's middle jewel.

“He came out of the Wood really good. It was a good tightener for him and a learning curve for me,” said Velazquez. “I went in there 100% believing in my horse but at the end of the day, going into those big races you need a big race. My horse showed up and he showed me that he belongs there. He was beat less than five lengths off a long layoff. He impressed me. I think we're going to try the Preakness. We'll look at the Tesio as a target race for him and to keep him fit.”

Velazquez said Brooklyn Strong had a difficult trip in the Wood Memorial when finishing 4 3/4 lengths back of longshot winner Bourbonic (Bernardini).

“I've watched the replay a dozen times and he never really got a break down the back side,” said Velazquez. “He was steadied behind traffic and that takes energy. When he finally found a hole he got banged around again. The mile and an eighth was a little hard on him off the layoff.”
