Latest Foal Out of Leslie’s Lady Earns ‘Rising Star’ Tag

Clarkland Farm homebred MARR TIME (Not This Time), the penultimate foal out of outstanding blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek), made her debut a winning one at Keeneland and earned the 'TDN Rising Star' tag in the process. Showing good early speed, the 3-5 chalk sparred with 20-1 longshot Roll Baby (Runhappy) through a :22.84 opening quarter. Shaking off that foe on the backstretch, the bay jumped clear in the lane to win going away by 2 3/4 lengths. Dame Joviale (Into Mischief) was the runner-up. Marr Time is the second 'TDN Rising Star' for her young sire Not This Time, joining GISW Princess Noor.

Fred & Nancy Mitchell's Clarkland Farm purchased the golden goose that is Leslie's Lady for just $100,000 in foal to Orientate at the 2006 Keeneland November Sale and it would prove to be the bargain of a lifetime. Her 2005 foal Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) won the GI Cashcall Futurity S. for Spendthrift 13 months after that purchase. He went on to become one of the most prolific stallions of his generation and seems to just get better each year. Her fourth foal for the Clarkland team was none other than future Hall of Famer Beholder (Henny Hughes), a $180,000 KEESEP purchase by Spendthrift. The bay mare won four Eclipse awards, three Breeders' Cup races and seven other Grade I events, earning over $6.1 million before retiring to the breeding shed.

Leslie's Lady's 2013 foal, a Curlin filly named Leslie's Harmony, summoned $1.1 million from Bridlewood Farm at Keeneland September, but she did not reproduce her sibling's racetrack prowess. However, Leslie's Lady's 2015 foal outdid that filly in the sales ring and on the track. Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) topped the 2016 KEESEP sale on a final bid of $3 million from Coolmore and captured the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G2 UAE Derby. The GI Travers S. runner-up currently stands at Ashford Stud and his oldest foals are yearlings, who have been well received in the sales ring. Leslie's Lady's last foal to be offered at auction, an American Pharoah filly named America's Joy, set a new record when summoning a whopping $8.2 million from Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm at Keeneland September. Sadly, the 3-year-old filly was euthanized over the summer after suffering a career-ending injury in a workout. The 25-year-old mare's final foal is the now-yearling filly Love You Irene (Kantharos), who, like Marr Time, was retained by her breeder.

Oct. 28 Insights: Second-to-Last Leslie’s Lady Foal Debuts at Keeneland

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

5th-KEE, $84k, Msw, 2yo, f, 6f, 3:08 p.m. ET

One of the most prolific broodmares of the 21st century will be represented by her penultimate foal Thursday at Keeneland when MARR TIME (Not This Time–Leslie's Lady) opens her account for Clarkland Farm and Brad Cox in this sprint. Famously the producer of international superstar stallion Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday), four-time champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) and GISW multimillionaire Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy), the now 25-year-old Leslie's Lady was retired from breeding after foaling a Kantharos filly last year. Marr Time has trained as if she's yet another runner out of her dam, showing a half-dozen sharp breezes, highlighted by a five-furlong bullet from the gate over this track in :59 2/5 (1/30) Oct. 10. Clarkland Farm In Familiar Territory With Mendelssohn Colt At Keeneland September

A half-decade ago, the stall closest to the center aisle under Clarkland Farm's Book 1 shedrow at Keeneland September was occupied by a well-related Scat Daddy colt. Ahead of this year's first book, the same stall in Barn 5 is occupied by one of his sons.

As one might expect, a lot happened in between.

The Scat Daddy colt was out of Clarkland's cornerstone broodmare Leslie's Lady, and he had siblings Into Mischief and Beholder powering his page with black type. He'd be named Mendelssohn after the Coolmore partnership spent $3 million to make him the most expensive offering of the 2016 Keeneland September sale. Then, he'd go on to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and Group 2 U.A.E. Derby before retiring to Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., for the 2019 breeding season.

Mendelssohn tied for the second-most mares bred during his first season at stud, with 252. The only horse he trailed was half-brother Into Mischief at Spendthrift Farm.

Fred Mitchell of Lexington, Ky.-based Clarkland Farm had two foals from that initial crop, including the colt residing in the same stall during the same book as his seven-figure sire. Offered as Hip 58, the colt is out of the Grade 1-placed stakes-winning Lookin at Lucky mare Maybellene.

“He's just a nice individual, and the mare needs a runner, so we'll see,” Mitchell said. “She was a nice, well-bred racemare, and she had bad luck. Her first one by American Pharoah was in that fire accident that Christophe Clement had [Under the Oaks, who was one of 10 horses lost in a 2020 van fire], so that put an end to that really nice 2-year-old. The mare's had a little bit of bad luck, but this is a really nice individual, and she's still a young mare.”

The colt's tie to Leslie's Lady through Mendelssohn is perhaps his most notable pedigree note, but the female family that Maybellene contributes is certainly no slouch. The page includes champion Anees and the cornerstone sire Elusive Quality.

Mitchell has a unique perspective on some of North America's top sires, also throwing in California stallion Curlin to Mischief, having seen most of them develop from day one, even if one removes Into Mischief, who was born before Clarkland Farm bought Leslie's Lady. While we are all familiar with what the most famous offspring of Leslie's Lady look like at the public-facing stages of their lives – the sales ring, the racetrack, and at stud – Mitchell has a grasp of how they developed as foals, and how that might inform how their offspring will come up at the same age.

In addition to the two Mendelssohn yearlings on the farm, Mitchell said he also has four weanlings by the stallion, and they're setting an impressive pace.

“I probably liked them better than I did the first couple crops of Into Mischief, and we can't say anything wrong about Into Mischief,” he said. “Mendelssohn seems to cross with practically any type of mare you breed to him.”

That familiarity with the bloodline also gave Mitchell another perspective that only he and the other staff at Clarkland Farm might recognize.

“I see a lot of Leslie's Lady coming out in them,” he said of the Mendelssohns. “We've got a mare that's got an outstanding weanling on the ground, and is no kin to Leslie's Lady, but the foal looks like Beholder. I thought that was interesting to see coming out of them.”

Mendelssohn has 93 yearlings cataloged to his first Keeneland September sale, which is the most of any debuting sire this year. The veteran, and leading general sire, Into Mischief has 91 in the September catalog.

Mendelssohn has a hard act to follow after his record-setting big brother, but what he's already accomplished to get to this point has put 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady in an even loftier stratosphere. The “big stall” in Barn 5 has already panned out for the Clarkland Farm consignment, and now it could extend multiple legacies even further.

“It's unreal for a broodmare to have three horses standing at stud,” Mitchell said. “She's accomplished more than we think a mare could ever possibly do. If Mendelssohn hits even close to what Into Mischief has done, it'll be something to see, and the pedigree will go on for years and years.”

Half-Sister to Into Mischief Dies in Saratoga Training Accident

The unraced 3-year-old filly America's Joy (American Pharoah), a half-sister to Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday), Beholder (Henny Hughes) and Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy), out of the 2016 Broodmare of the year Leslie's Lady suffered a fatal injury Sunday morning during a workout at Saratoga, according to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm.

Pope purchased the filly for a record $8.2 million at the 2019 Keeneland September sale.

The news was a severe blow to her connections, who were anxiously awaiting the debut of a filly who appeared to have unlimited potential.

Trainer Todd Pletcher sent her out for what was supposed to be her last workout before beginning her career early next month at Belmont. Pletcher told Pope that America's Joy went down just after the work had been concluded and that by the time he reached her she was dead. It appears, Pope said, that the filly fractured her left front sesamoid, which caused her to fall and break her neck.

“She brought a lot of joy to everybody's life,” Pope said. “She was just a perfect horse in every way. She was so sweet and so kind. She was just such a classy, classy horse. I'm sorry that the racing world will never get to see all of the accomplishments she was about to make on the track and as a mama. May she rest in peace.”

Pope said that the filly was given some time off as a 2-year-old because of some growing issues. She had her first work for Pletcher July 5 and had a steady stream of works leading into Sunday's, which clockers recorded as a half-mile breeze in :47.80 over the main track. In an indication of what Pletcher thought of America's Joy, he had, on at least two occasions, sent her out to work in company with 2020 GI Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Happy Saver (Super Saver).

“She took to training early and right away did everything great,” Pope said. “We brought her along slowly and then sent her to Todd. He was very excited about her. He was working her with graded stakes horses because she was just playing with other horses. She could even outwork the stakes horses.”

America's Joy was consigned by her breeder, Clarkland Farm. Sheikh Mohammed of Godolphin and B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm were also bidding on the filly, but Pope prevailed.

“You can't fault her,” she told the TDN after the Keeneland purchase. “She's perfectly balanced, she's gorgeous, she's not too big, not too small. Obviously, we're hoping that Beholder hits it as a broodmare. She certainly has tremendous value should she not get to the races for whatever reason. Like everything else, it's a big gamble; fingers crossed, lots of prayers and wish us well.”

Leslie's Lady was pensioned from breeding duties this spring. She has also produced a 2-year-old filly by Not This Time and a yearling filly by Kantharos.

“There are a lot of people to whom I'd like to express my gratitude for having taken such good care of her,” Pope said. “There's Todd Quast, Lynda and her crew at Whisper Hill Farm. There's Lee and his crew at Whisper Hill Training Center and Dr. Greg Bonen Clark. I'd like to thank Fred Mitchell and Clarkland Farm, Todd Pletcher and her fan club.”
