First Black Type Winner For Ulysses As Piz Badile Prevails

Aidan, Joseph and Donnacha O'Brien were responsible for six of the nine runners in Saturday's G3 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax S. and it was the pair of juniors who played out the finish with the youngest prevailing after a thriller involving Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) and Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Flaxman Stables Ireland's Piz Badile had been a half-length second to TDN Rising Star Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the nine-furlong G3 Eyrefield S. here in October, but had a three-pound pull with that rival and a smoother trip tracking the leading quartet under cover throughout the early stages. Getting a charmed run up the inner to lead passing the two-furlong marker, the 4-1 second favourite was headed by Joseph's Buckaroo a furlong later but answered Gavin Ryan's call to get back in front near the line. There was a short head between them there and 3 3/4 lengths back to the 10-3 favourite Duke de Sessa, of whom Dermot Weld had warned would need the reintroduction and who was briefly held up in his run turning for home. “He's going to be better going a mile and a half, so it's nice to see him do that over 10 furlongs,” Donnacha said of the winner, the first in black-type company from the first crop of his Cheveley Stud-based sire (by Galileo {Ire}). “He's a beautiful horse and I think a lot of him, so I would have been disappointed if he wasn't there or thereabouts. He'll probably come back for the [G3] Derrinstown [Derby Trial] and then on to Epsom. He's still a big frame of a horse and I actually think he'll be better next year.”

Piz Badile, who had scored on his debut at Killarney in July and was considered unlucky on his only other start in the Eyrefield, hails from a high-class Niarchos family containing some of the operation's biggest names. He is the first foal out of the Listed Prix Zarkava winner and G2 Prix Corrida runner-up That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), herself a daughter of the talented Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector) who was successful in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and a regular at the top table for Warren Place. Shiva, who is also the second dam of the G2 Gimcrack S. and G2 Champagne S. winner Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), is a full-sister to the G2 Prix Foy winner Limnos (Jpn) and a half to the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo). She is the dam of Piz Badile's G1 International S. and G1 Eclipse S.-winning sire Ulysses himself, which gives this winner a 3×3 inbreeding to Lingerie (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Also connected to the leading performers Main Sequence (Aldebaran) and Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), That Which Is Not has the 2-year-old colt Yosemite Valley (GB) (Shamardal) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB).

Frankel’s Homeless Songs Bursts Into The Guineas Picture

Another Classic trial, another TDN Rising Star in the headlines as Moyglare's Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) surged to an impressive success in Saturday's G3 Ballylinch Stud “Priory Belle” 1,000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown. Things had gone awry since her debut defeat of Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio) over this seven-furlong trip and course in July, but Dermot Weld had the homebred fine-tuned for this competitive affair and all roads now lead to the May 1 G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Held up worse than mid-division by Chris Hayes after missing the break, the 6-1 shot let it all play out ahead until being unleashed two out. Producing a scintillating effort down the outer to swamp her old rival passing the furlong pole, the homebred had a length in hand at the line over Agartha, who was racing under a three-pound penalty with Villanova Queen (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) denying the 5-4 favourite Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) third place 3/4 of a length further away. “She'd been working extremely well and is a quality filly with a lot of pace,” Weld said. “That was a very good performance from her-things didn't go her way last year, but I was confident she would come back this year and show what she was capable of. We'll see how she comes out of this and I'll speak with Eva Maria [Bucher-Haefner], but I would say Newmarket is a strong possibility. She may well get 10 furlongs in time.”

Homeless Songs, who had slipped from the radar having been only fifth as Agartha filled the runner-up spot in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The Curragh in September and sixth in the course-and-distance G3 Killavullan S. the following month, is a half-sister to the ill-fated Listed Orby S. winner Reve de Vol (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) who was also placed in the G2 Champions Juvenile S. and G3 Royal Whip S. Bred on the same cross as Adayar (Ire), she is the second foal out of Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was placed in the G3 Concorde S., G3 Park Express S. and G3 Gladness S. before gaining that vital black-type success in the Listed Frankfurt Sprint Trophy.

Joailliere's unraced dam Majestic Silver (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) is also responsible for the G3 Dance Design S. and G3 Meld S. winner Carla Bianca (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and the G2 Beresford S. runner-up True Solitaire (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is out of the listed scorer Diamond Trim (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}), dam of this stable's star stayer Profound Beauty (Ire) (Danehill) whose winning exploits included seven black-type contests and who was also runner-up in the G1 Irish St Leger. Diamond Trim is a daughter of the Stud's famed In Anticipation (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), which connects her to the likes of Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill), Princess Highway (Street Cry {Ire}), Royal Diamond (Ire) (King's Best) and Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Joailliere has the 2-year-old colt Time Tells All (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and a yearling full-brother to Homeless Songs in the wings.

Newmarket Dream Closer For Dr Zempf After Trial Success

“I'd love to win an English Guineas,” Ger Lyons said after watching TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) collect in Saturday's Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2,000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown. Always travelling easily in second throughout the early stages under Colin Keane, Peter Brant's G1 Phoenix S. runner-up took control two out and held off The Acropolis (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) to reward takers of 11-10 by half a length, with a length back to fellow TDN Rising Star New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in third. Lyons was not getting carried away, however. “I do think he is a good bit shy of the favourite [Native Trail] at the moment, but at least that's the first box ticked,” he said reflecting on the Apr. 30 Newmarket Classic. “He parked in front–he only does enough and is one that wants to be arriving late on the scene. He had a good blow after, so there's plenty of improvement but if he's going for the big one there needs to be. We were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole over six last year, so I never thought going seven or a mile would be a problem. He has a good temperament and was just running a bit free early on.”

Dr Zempf's stamina has to be taken on trust on pedigree, being a son of the six-furlong G3 Prix Eclipse winner Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) who is a half to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S.-placed I'm So Glad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}). Related to the GII Schuylerville S. winner Distinct Habit (Distinct Pro) and the dual listed-winning sprinter and G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise runner-up Terroir (Ire) (Fairy King), the dam has a connection with the GI Preakness S. hero Red Bullet (Unbridled) and this stable's G3 Solonaway S. winner Brendan Brackan (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}). Souvenir Delondres also has a 2-year-old
filly by Kingman (GB) and a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB).
