Leading Thoroughbred Breeders In North America For 2021: A Different Take

The Jockey Club recently released its list of leading Thoroughbred breeders for 2021, ranking the top 50 individual breeders by money won in North America. It also published a second list that includes breeding partnerships. Those lists can be viewed here.

High-volume breeder Calumet Farm got knocked off its perch atop the list the last two years, with Godolphin out-earning Calumet by nearly $2.4 million despite having less than one-third the number of starters. Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, WinStar Farm and Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey rounded out the top five by North American money won.

Calumet was represented by 549 individual starters, more than twice as many as the next largest-sized operation, that of the Ramseys, with 246 starters.

That's all well and good, but I think there are other ways to look at this list that might be more useful to the Thoroughbred breeder than seeing who won the most money.

The accompanying list ranks those same breeders (or at least breeders with five or more starters in 2021) by average earnings per start. (Note: The only top 50 breeder with fewer than five starters was Northern Farm, which won $2,080,000 with its two Japanese-bred starters, Breeders' Cup winners, Loves Only You and Marche Lorraine).

The two people topping the list, Angie Moore ($151,406 per start) and Gail Rice $97,318), each were carried by one major horse. Among her six starters, Moore bred probable Horse of the Year Knicks Go, whose victories in 2021 included the G1 Pegasus World Cup and G1 Breeders' Cup Classic. Rice bred seven starters, led by Medina Spirit, whose 2021 earnings of $3,520,000 include $1,860,000 from the G1 Kentucky Derby. Those earnings are in jeopardy because of the horse's failed drug test.

Third on the list by average earnings per start is the late Edward A. Cox Jr., who was also elevated by one big horse. Hot Rod Charlie's $2,127,500 in earnings made up the bulk of purse money won by Cox-bred runners in 2021. Same goes with St. George Stables, ranked fourth by average earnings per start. St. George bred multiple G1 winner Letruska, who earned $1,945,540 in North America in 2021.

Rounding out the top five on our list is Godolphin, which leads the list by number of stakes winners, 18. Godolphin benefits in average earnings per start and stakes winner through its global operation by only sending mostly proven horses from Europe to compete at the top level in North America.

The top five by average earnings per start also account for the highest average percentage of stakes winners from starters.

Other breeding operations that had a commendable percentage of stakes winners/starters are Sam-Son Farms (9.62%), Live Oak Stud (9.52%), G. Watts Humphrey Jr. (8.86%), Rustlewood Farm (8.82%), W. S. Farish (8.51%), Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings (8,39%) and Hinkle Farms (8.16%).

Godolphin Atop List Of Leading Breeders In North America

Godolphin topped the individual breeders list in North America in 2021 with $18,447,150 in earnings, according to statistics released by The Jockey Club Information Systems. Godolphin bred 172 starters with 136 wins, 126 seconds, and 115 thirds out of 804 starts.

Calumet Farm, which topped the list in 2019 and 2020, was second with earnings of $16,127,515 with 470 wins out of 3,516 starts.

Godolphin also led the breeders list that includes partners with $20,705,957 in earnings and 195 wins from 1,297 starts. Calumet Farm was second with $16,216,072 in earnings and 475 wins out of 3,555 starts.

Rounding out the top 10 individual breeders were Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $13,188,853 (160 wins / 880 starts); WinStar Farm, LLC, $9,146,093 (221/1,293); Kenneth L. Ramsey & Sarah K. Ramsey, $7,113,597 (232/1,644); Gary & Mary West Stables Inc., $6,830,991 (156/1,010); Brereton C. Jones, $6,703,710 (176/1,327); Juddmonte Farms Inc., $6,432,063 (84/419); Angie Moore, $6,207,646 (14/41); and Spendthrift Farm LLC, $5,462,547 (135/884).

Completing the list of the top 10 breeders including partnerships were Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $13,415,180 (162 wins / 906 starts); WinStar Farm, LLC, $12,074,918 (332/2,039); Kenneth L. Ramsey, $7,417,425 (238/1,722); Sarah K. Ramsey, $7,417,425 (238/1,722); Fred W. Hertrich III, $7,300,217 (165/1,109); Brereton C. Jones, $7,007,034 (191/1,425); Gary & Mary West Stables Inc., $6,831,934 (156/1,016); and Juddmonte Farms Inc., $6,432,063 (84/419).

Leading North American Breeders For 2020: A Different Take

Last week, The Jockey Club released its list of leading North American Thoroughbred breeders for 2020, proclaiming Calumet Farm as the top breeder for the second year in a row.

Sure enough, the historic Lexington, Ky., farm owned since 2012 by reclusive billionaire Brad Kelley was atop the list of individual breeders with more than $9.7 million in 2020 North American earnings by horses it bred. If you take partnerships into account, Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. – second behind Calumet on the individual list – was the North American leader with $11.7 million in earnings.

I don't judge the quality of restaurants or decide where to eat by looking at who generates the most revenue. If I did, I'd wind up at McDonald's three meals a day. So it stands to reason that there must be another way to look at this year-end list, which includes statistics for the top 100 breeders by North American earnings. The data includes starters, starts, wins, seconds, thirds, earnings and black type stakes winners.

I took the liberty of adding a few statistical columns that provide some context to the leading breeders list, including average number of starts per starter, percentage of wins from starts, average earnings per start and percentage of black type winners from starters.

The list below (which excluded a handful of breeders with fewer than five starters each) ranks North American breeders by average earnings per start. Topping the list in this category is Knowles Bloodstock ($55,847 per start), which had just six starters but included Grade 2 Louisiana Derby winner Wells Bayou among them. Second is Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, whose $22,705 average was buoyed considerably by the $7,170,000 earned by probable Horse of the Year Authentic.

Ranked 74th on the list of leading breeders by average earnings per start is Calumet Farm, whose 479 runners averaged $3,776 per start. WinStar Farm, with 214 starters, ranks 19th nationally with $8,122 earnings per start – more than twice that of Calumet.

Another way of looking at excellence in breeding is black type winners. Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin and Barbara Banke's Stonestreet led the way with each breeding 13 North American stakes winners. WinStar and Calumet were next with 10 each.

If you look at the list by percentage of black type winners from starters (minimum five starters), Knowles Bloodstock again leads the way with 33.33% (2-of-6), followed by China Horse Club International Ltd, with 16.67% (4-of-24).

Stonestreet ranks ninth by percentage of stakes winners from starters, at 8.55%, with Godolphin 12th at 8.02%. WinStar Farm is 33rd at 4.67% and Calumet Farm is 62nd at 2.09%.

So who was the top North American breeder in 2020? If you go by quantity, it's Calumet, which had 75% more starters than runner-up WinStar Farm. In my opinion, quality trumps quantity.

Calumet Farm Tops North American Breeders By Earnings In 2020

Calumet Farm has topped the individual breeders list in North America for the second year in a row with $9,768,957 in earnings in 2020, according to statistics released today by The Jockey Club Information Systems. Calumet Farm bred 479 starters with 336 wins, 289 seconds, and 346 thirds out of 2,587 starts.

WinStar Farm, LLC was second with earnings of $9,234,344 with 149 wins out of 1,137 starts.

WinStar Farm, LLC topped the breeders list that includes partners with $11,713,732 in earnings and 254 wins from 1,851 starts. Calumet Farm came in second with $9,869,125 in earnings and 343 wins out of 2,619 starts.

Rounding out the top 10 individual breeders were Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, LLC, $8,628,034 (51 wins / 380 starts); Godolphin, $7,032,428 (113/620); Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $5,911,505 (138/744); Kenneth L. Ramsey & Sarah K. Ramsey, $5,589,796 (206/1633); Brereton C. Jones, $4,933,211 (159/1,087); Gary & Mary West Stables Inc., $4,241,666 (126/762); Juddmonte Farms Inc., $4,034,079 (64/377); and Woodford Thoroughbreds, LLC, $3,601,327 (115/834).
