Serifos Bests Elders In Mile Championship

G1 Racing's Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) steamed home impressively from near the back of the pack to take the G1 Mile Championship at Hanshin on Sunday. Sent off at 8-1, he is the first 3-year-old colt to defeat his elders in the race since Stelvio (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in 2018.

Caught in midfield Serifos relaxed beautifully under Damian Lane as Piece Of Eight (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) raced hard on the steel while shadowed by Falconia (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), with that duo swapping positions in the backstretch. The pace remained hot, with Falconia covering the first 1000 metres in a blistering :58.5, and he continued to hold the advantage on the bend. Fanning across the track for the stretch drive, Falconia still led under pressure, but his position appeared tenuous, as Danon The Kid (Jpn) (Just A Way {Jpn}) and Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) were winding up with their runs. Lane had Serifos over nine paths off the fence, but once he saw daylight a furlong from home, he picked up the field in a matter of strides to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths.

His rivals played bumper cars in late stretch, with 2020 Japanese Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Danon The Kid best of the remainder, a half-length to the good of 2020/21 Japanese filly champion Sodashi, who was seeking her fourth crown at the top table. She, in turn, was a nose ahead of Group 2 scorer Soul Rush (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in a bunched finish.

“I'm very happy, the horse was super today,” said jockey Damian Lane. “He's very consistent and I knew he would improve after watching his videos. I wanted to show how really competitive he is. The pace was good and he was a bit keen early but I was always confident.”

A winner of his first three starts as a juvenile including the G3 Niigata Nisai S. and the G2 Daily Hai Nisai S., he ran second to subsequent 2022 G1 Japanese Derby hero Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. last December. Benched until the G1 NHK Mile Cup in May, he ran fourth, and filled that spot again in June in the G1 Yasuda Kinen. Given some time on the sidelines, he returned to take the G2 Fuji S. by a neck as the 6-5 crowd's pick on Oct. 22.

Pedigree Notes

Daiwa Major's stakes winners stand at 42, and Serifos is one of 19 group scorers for the 21-year-old. With his Mile Championship victory, the 3-year-old is his seventh Group 1 winner, anchored by three-time Group 1 winner Admire Mars (Jpn), who did his best running over a mile in Hong Kong and Japan. The much lamented Le Havre (Ire) is still in the early stages of his broodmare sire career, but three of his four stakes winners have struck at group level. Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), successful in the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. and G1 Coronation Cup, was Le Havre's first top-level scorer, and Serifos is his second.

Sea Front took time to come to hand, placing at two, wining twice at three, and then taking her first listed victory, the Prix Maurice Zilber at four. Also stakes placed twice more that year, she returned at five to take third in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil. Picked up for just €135,000 out of the 2016 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale by Haruya Yoshida, Sea Front was sent to Japan and covered by Orfevre (Jpn), who despite his slew of Japanese accolades, is best known for finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe twice. The resulting foal, the three-time winner Forte Dei Marmi (Jpn), won over 2400m on turf at three, and added a brace of wins on dirt at 1800m and 1900m at the tail end of last year and in January of 2022. Serifos is her second foal. The best foal out of the unraced Freedom Herself (Fr) (Freedom Cry {GB}), she has not produced a foal since.

Serifos's third dam, the multiple stakes-placed Redeem Herself (Ire) (General Assembly), threw Irish listed winner and triple group-placed Mediation (Ire) to the cover of Caerleon. That mare would go on to account for a brace of stakes winners led by GI Pacific Classic S. victor Go Between (Point Given), as well as the winning dam of the GI Chandelier S. and GI Starlet S. third K P Dreamin (Union Rags).

Le Havre Dies Weeks After Being Pensioned

The Prix du Jockey Club winner and Classic sire Le Havre (Ire) has died at the age of 16. The son of Noverre was euthanised at Sumbe's Haras de Montfort et Preaux in Normandy just three weeks after his retirement from stud duties had been announced.

Le Havre's owner Gerard Augustin-Normand told TDN at that time, “He has been the most important horse of my life. He was the beginning and it's very emotional for me. I wouldn't have been in the breeding business if he had not been there. Everything began with Le Havre and I wouldn't have started breeding horses without him.

“It has not been easy but it is the right thing to do. We love him so much and he has given us the biggest emotions. I hope he will stay with us as long as possible.”

Sadly, Le Havre was not granted a long retirement but in his 12 full seasons at stud he has to date been represented by 20 group winners and 30 listed winners. They are headed by two dual Classic-winning daughters. Avenir Certain (Fr), a member of his first crop bred by Elisabeth Vidal, became Le Havre's first Classic winner in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and swiftly followed up in the Prix de Diane. Two years later the Augustin-Normand-bred La Cressonniere (Fr) completed the same Classic double. Both fillies were campaigned in partnership by Augustin-Normand and Antonio Caro and trained by Le Havre's former trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.

Augustin-Normand said last month, “When Le Havre went to stud I wanted to give him the best chances, everything he needed to succeed. I was so grateful to him for what he had given me, and that has not stopped. To have won two Poules and the Prix de Diane twice [with his daughters] is incredible.”

Le Havre was bred by Jan, Maja and Anna Sundstrom under their Team Hogdala banner and was the first foal of his dam Marie Rheinberg (Ger) (Surako {Ger}), a half-sister to the Group 1-winning sprinter Polar Falcon (Nureyev). Bought by Rouget for €100,000 at Arqana's August Sale, he became the first major winner in Thoroughbred racing for his prolific owner Gerard Augustin-Normand, who had previously been involved with racing trotters.

A dual winner at two, Le Havre won the Listed Prix Djebel on his 3-year-old debut, beating the previous season's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Naaqoos (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) into second. He was then runner-up to Silver Frost (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains before his dominant victory in the  Prix du Jockey Club on what would transpire to be Le Havre's final start.

His retirement to what was then known as Haras de la Cauviniere in 2009 sparked a significant venture into the Thoroughbred breeding world by Augustin-Normand, who invested heavily but shrewdly in broodmares to support his young stallion.

The owner was soon rewarded with the aforementioned Avenir Certain, and Suedois (Fr) later became the second Group/Grade 1 winner from Le Havre's first crop when landing the GI Shadwell Turf Mile. La Cressonniere, Villa Marina (Fr), winner of the G1 Prix de l'Opera, and Wonderful Tonight (Fr), victrix of the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and the G1 Prix de Royallieu, followed on the roll call of top-level winners.

In a role in which we are likely to see him become more prominent in the years to come, Le Havre is the broodmare sire of G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}). A number of his daughters have been exported to Japan, including both his French Classic winners. Avenir Certain, who died after producing just two foals, is the dam of Des Ailes (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the winner of last year's G2 Hanshin Himba S. as well as the G3 Aichi Hai in February. Le Havre's daughter Sea Front (Fr) is the dam of the Grade 2-winning juvenile Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}).

Le Havre’s Glycon Takes The Grand Prix de Deauville

Haras de Saint Pair's Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) capped Deauville's August festival on Sunday with a win in the feature G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville. Asked to go beyond a mile and a quarter for the first time when taking the G3 Prix de Reux over this track and 12 1/2-furlong trip on his latest outing Aug. 8, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained homebred was patiently ridden in rear early by Cristian Demuro. Launched to take command 300 metres from the finish, the 9-10 favourite saw off The Good Man (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) to score by half a length, with Sublimis (Ire) (Shamardal) a short neck away in third.

Daiwa Major Colt Stays Perfect in Niigata Nisai

Successful when unveiled at Chukyo in a newcomers' heat in June, Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) made it two on the bounce with a first black-type and group score in the G3 Niigata Nisai S. on Sunday.

Sent off as the 7-2 third choice, the Oiwake Farm-bred took advantage of his rail draw and saved every inch of ground against the fence in midpack through the early going as Otaru Ever (Jpn) (Leontes {Jpn}) showed the way. After a half in :48.50, he was sitting sixth as that rival continued to lead.

Dashing up the rail with three furlongs remaining down the long Niigata straight, he gradually subdued Otaru Ever, and appeared to be home free. The 9-5 favourite, Arrival (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), made a late run, but finished 1 1/4 lengths back on the line. It was three-quarters of a length back to Otaru Ever in third.

Pedigree Notes

By one of the increasingly rare active sire sons of Sunday Silence, Serifos is the 38th black-type winner and 18th group winner for the 2004 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Daiwa Major, who stood at Shadai Stallion Station this season for a private fee. Serifos's broodmare sire Le Havre already has a pair of black-type winners in that sphere, this season's progressive G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Des Ailes (Jpn), a Japanese Group 2 victress who is by the late Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence).

The winner is the second foal and scorer for his dam, who won the Listed Prix Maurice Zilber at four and placed in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines at five. Serifos is the last reported foal for Sea Front, who was purchased for €135,000 out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2016 and sent to Japan.

Although Sea Front is the only black-type winner for her unraced dam, Freedom Herself (Fr) (Freedom Cry {GB}), the latter's half-sister Mediation (Ire) (Caerleon) won at the listed level in Ireland and placed at the group level there and Stateside. As a broodmare, Mediation has foaled GI Pacific Classic S. hero Go Between (Point Given), stakes winner Go Around (Medaglia d'Oro), the G2 Cherry Hinton S. third Extreme Beauty (Rahy) and the winning dam of GI Chandelier S. and GI Starlet S. third K P Dreamin (Union Rags).
