Joe Goes Wide, Drives Down Stretch To Take Maryland Juvenile

The Elkstone Group LLC's homebred Joe, a 2-year-old son of Declaration of War, drove to the front down the stretch under jockey Victor Carrasco to win Saturday's $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md.

After making his debut on turf Oct. 24, Joe broke his maiden Nov. 21 at a mile on the main track at Laurel by 3 ½ lengths. Carrasco, who has ridden Joe in each of his starts and works the horse, got the seven furlongs in 1:25.63.

“We knew we was a really talented horse,” Carrasco said. “The first time Mike decided to run him on the turf because he was bred for the turf. I said, 'Mike, I think he's better on the turf,' and he's showed – he's two for two on the dirt – he's pretty good.”

Breaking from the No. 12 post, Joe was four wide down the backstretch while a group including Royal Spy, Coastal Mission, Local Motive, and Mr. Mox set an opening quarter in :23.09 and a half in :47.26. Five wide entering the stretch, Joe drove past Alottahope and Local Motive inside the eighth pole and to the finish line.

“After I turned for home and got him in the clear I started getting after him and he moved on,” Carrasco said.

Coastal Mission ‘Ready To Go’ For Rescheduled Maryland Juvenile

An extra two weeks has done little to slow down Coleswood Farm, Inc.'s Coastal Mission or dampen the enthusiasm of his connections heading into Saturday's $100,000 Maryland Juvenile at Laurel Park.

The 40th running of the Maryland Juvenile and 35th edition of the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Fillies, both for Maryland-bred/sired horses sprinting seven furlongs, serve as co-headliners on a nine-race program that begins with a 12:25 p.m. first post.

Both races were originally carded for Dec. 4 before racing was paused to allow for maintenance on Laurel's main track. Live racing resumes Thursday.

Based at Charles Town with trainer Jeff Runco, a winner of more than 4,500 career races, Coastal Mission romped by 6 ½ lengths in his Sept. 25 debut going 4 ½ furlongs over his home course. He ran second, beaten two lengths, in the Maryland Million Nursery Oct. 23 at Laurel, his most recent race.

Pointed directly to this spot out of the Maryland Million, Coastal Mission has breezed three times since at Charles Town. All three have been the fastest on the day, including three furlongs in 35.60 seconds Dec. 3 in his latest move.

“He's doing great and ready to go,” Runco said. “These delays happen, unfortunately, but it gave him a little bit more time. He'll be ready for Saturday.”

By Great Notion out of the Crowd Pleaser mare Smart Crowd, Coastal Mission is a full brother to Runco-trained Lewisfield, a West Virginia-bred who earned eight of his nine career wins in Maryland including all four of his stakes victories as well as his career finale last November before being retired to Virginia.

“They're both good-looking horses but they don't have the same personality,” Runco said. “They're both very athletic and all that. Lewisfield was a pretty tough horse. He was kind of ornery. This horse isn't like that. He looks good and he's doing good.”

Another horse with strong lineage is No Guts No Glory Farm's Alottahope, a half-brother to stablemate Street Lute, an eight-time stakes-winning 3-year-old filly also trained by Jerry Robb. Alottahope has raced once, a professional 2 ¾-length triumph Nov. 13 in an off-the-turf maiden special weight sprint at Laurel.

Also entering the Juvenile off victories are Local Motive, Joe, One Ten and Royal Spy. Bird Mobberley's Local Motive is a two-time stakes winner, taking the five-furlong Hickory Tree on the Colonial Downs turf Aug. 2 in his second start, and most recently gutting out a head victory in the six-furlong James F. Lewis III Nov. 13 at Laurel.

The Elkstone Group's Joe, a homebred Declaration of War colt, was a popular 3 ½-length maiden special weight winner going a mile Nov. 21 at Laurel. One Ten and Royal Spy exit split divisions of a seven-furlong waiver maiden claimer Nov. 26 at Laurel, with Royal Spy winning in 1:25.35 and One Ten in 1:26.20.

Robert D. Bone and Edward J. Brown Jr.'s Shady Munni has encountered trouble in each of his two most recent starts, finishing third as the favorite after bobbling at the start of a one-mile optional claiming allowance Nov. 21 at Laurel. Prior to that he was bumped early and wound up fourth in the Nursery.

“[Last race] he stumbled a little bit when the gate opened and he grabbed himself a little and lost a shoe,” trainer Claudio Gonzalez said. “Even with that, he ran good. He came back good, and that is more important. He has been doing good to now. He's a nice horse.”

Trainer Jamie Ness entered the trio of Mr. Mox, a two-time winner that ran fifth in the Nursery, and Delaware Park maiden winners Uncle Irish and Crabs N Beer. Gallant Gold, Kobe Tough and Wish Me Home round out the group.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has kept the The Elkstone Group's homebred Jester Calls Nojoy on target for the Juvenile Fillies. A bay daughter of Maclean's Music, she will be getting some class relief after running sixth in the Oct. 3 Frizette (G1) at Belmont Park and fifth in the Oct. 29 Myrtlewood at Keeneland in her most recent efforts.

Jester Calls Nojoy shows a steady string of half-mile works over Belmont's training track since her last start, including 50.88 seconds Dec. 4 and 49.66 Dec. 11, as she chases her first stakes victory.

“We've been fortunate that we've been able to continue training as normal,” Pletcher said. “We've gotten two breezes into her since the race was originally carded, so hopefully we have her fit and ready to go.”

Luna Belle, Sparkle Sprinkle and Sweet Gracie all faced off in the Oct. 23 Maryland Million Lassie and are entered to meet again in the Juvenile Fillies. Eric Rizer homebred Sparkle Sprinkle was third by a length, a head in front of Luna Belle. Sweet Gracie wound up eighth after forcing eventual winner Buff My Boots early.

Deborah Greene and trainer Hamilton Smith's Luna Belle, a homebred daughter of Great Notion, returned to be second in the Nov. 13 Smart Halo at Laurel, beaten 3 ¼ lengths by Buy the Best but 7 ½ lengths clear of third-place finisher Click to Confirm, who also comes back in the Juvenile Fillies.

Tee N Jay Stable's Dazzy, like Jester Calls Nojoy, has maintained a regular work schedule at Belmont ahead of what will be her stakes debut in her second career start. The Divining Rod filly was a 12-length winner of a restricted maiden special weight Oct. 29 at Belmont and tuned up for the Juvenile Fillies with a half-mile breeze in 48.45 seconds over its training track Dec. 11, ranking ninth of 117 horses.

Completing the field is Three M's Racing and Rafael Lopez's Preparefortakeoff, a maiden special weight winner sprinting seven furlongs two starts back Oct. 21 at Laurel.

Jorge Ruiz Notches Four Wins As Racing Returns To Laurel Park On Thursday

Live racing resumed at Laurel Park on Thursday, Dec. 16 for the first time since Nov. 28. The main track at Laurel was closed for an examination on Nov. 29 after an alarming number of fatalities – four from racing injuries and three while training – occurred between Nov. 6-28. The Maryland Jockey Club followed that inspection by cancelling racing and suspending morning workouts to allow for repair of the surface.

It was the second time in 2021 that racing at Laurel was halted because of track conditions. The first occurrence was in April after a spike in musculoskeletal injuries, which led to racing being shifted to Pimlico on an emergency basis. Track ownership undertook a multi-million dollar track renovation project that wasn't completed until August, with racing resuming at Laurel in September.

With help from noted trackmen Dennis Moore from California, Glen Kozak from the New York Racing Racing Association, and former MJC track superintendent John Passero, Maryland Jockey Club officials explained at last week's meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission that the most likely explanation for the cluster of fatalities was that water seeped into a seam in the base material of the stretch before that base material was able to cure, causing a slight depression. That has been repaired, and several additional changes have been made.

“We've been out every single day, day and night, to make sure that we have the best racing surface possible,” Laurel's track superintendent Chris Bosley said during this Tuesday's meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission. “There's been a huge learning curve with this material and this track from when it was put in in July to where we are now.”

Jockey Jorge Ruiz notched four wins on the day, and Sola Dei Gloria Stable's Bustoff completed a daily double for teenage riding sensation Charlie Marquez and trainer Hugh McMahon with his front-running triumph in Thursday's feature race.

A 6-year-old Maryland-bred Haynesfield gelding, Bustoff ($7.40) completed one mile in 1:38.96 over a fast main track to win the third-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up by 3 ½ lengths. Torch of Truth rallied late to edge 20-1 long shot Whiskey and You by a neck for second.

The return of racing and condition of the track was met with positive reviews by horsemen.

“It's much better; like night and day,” trainer Dale Capuano said. A winner of more than 3,500 career races, Capuano saddled Taking Risks Stable and Louis J. Ulman's favored Zen Pi ($4.60) to victory in the opener, a six-furlong claimer for 3-year-olds and up. The winning time under jockey Jorge Ruiz was 1:12.55.

“We're tickled to death. Jorge said the track felt good,” Capuano said. “You can tell by the time. These horses should run [1:12] and change and that's what he did,” he added. “It's good. I think they're run on the right track. I think getting [consultants] John Passero and Glenn Kozak was the right thing to do. We're all after the same thing. We might have different approaches to getting there but we're all for safe racing and keeping our horses and riders safe.”

Ruiz's other winners Thursday were Tenax ($12.20) for trainer Ken Cox in Race 3, Bourbon Wildcat ($30.20) for trainer Jose Magana in Race 6 and Capuano-trained Boss Logic ($6) in Race 8. Ruiz ranks second to Jevian Toledo in wins at the fall meet, 44-42.

Toledo leads all riders with 102 wins this year at Laurel and historic Pimlico Race Course, two more than the 18-year-old Marquez. Angel Cruz is third with 84 and Ruiz fourth at 82.

“The track is now different. Before it was hard, now it's deeper and a little fluffier,” Ruiz said. “The horses hit the ground a little more softly.”

Notes: Laurel will host a nine-race card starting at 12:25 p.m. Friday … Saturday is Maryland Spectacular Day with nine live races including a pair of $100,000 stakes for Maryland-bred/sired horses: the Maryland Juvenile and Maryland Juvenile Fillies. Also on the day are Holiday Giving Tree and Give a Gift/Get a Gift promotions, as well as a 2022 Maryland racing calendar giveaway.

Under Microscope of Heightened Vigilance, Racing at Laurel a ‘Go’

Amid glowing opinions from stakeholders that the work-in-progress new dirt surface at Laurel Park has improved dramatically after eight equine fatalities from main-track fractures there this autumn, racing has been greenlighted to proceed as scheduled Dec. 16 for the first time in 18 days.

The Maryland Racing Commission (MRC) determined during a Tuesday tele-meeting that it didn't technically need to take a vote for racing to resume, but the board made sure to solicit ample feedback from jockeys, trainers, track executives, track surface consultants and veterinarians before issuing a verbal approval for Thursday's already-drawn card.

The meeting's most insightful commentary was provided by commissioner R. Thomas Bowman, a veterinarian who chairs the MRC's Equine Health, Safety and Welfare Advisory Committee. He spoke bluntly and candidly while outlining a plan for how future horse deaths might be prevented.

“Transparency and trust and cooperation have not always been part of the culture on the racetrack,” Bowman said, noting how the financial interests of horse people and track managements have too often trumped health considerations.

“The safety of the horses and the riders has quite often been put in the background,” Bowman said. “That's not an accusation, and it's not an indication of what exists now. That's just a fact of a way that we have evolved over a long, long time…

“There doesn't seem to be any indication, in my mind, that there is any party or parties that are not willing to step up and try to straighten this situation out,” Bowman said. “And it's a daunting task.

“One of the things that bothered me the most, and still bothers me, is the fact that this last collection of tragedies should have been forewarned when the horsemen started screaming that the racetrack was too fast,” Bowman said. “I'm not pointing a finger at anybody. I'm saying that the process with which this information filters upstream to the commission…was not effective, was not working. And it irritates me to death that we have to go through this.”

Bowman said that since the Nov. 29 shutdown of the track, he has worked with backstretch stakeholders and executives from The Stronach Group (which owns the Maryland Jockey Club [MJC], which in turn owns Laurel) to come up with system that will allow everyone involved to have safety-related input that will be monitored on a regular basis.

“If the trainers had felt that they could go to someone and their complaints were not just dismissed, possibly we could have circumvented a lot of this,” Bowman said.

Bowman said the idea of having a weekly required meeting to accomplish that goal was first proposed, but that he wasn't in favor of having stakeholders air concerns that way because public meetings aren't always conducive to people speaking candidly.

Instead, he said he's working on a plan in which Heidi Thomas, the MJC's senior veterinarian, will actively make the rounds on the backstretch to routinely speak with horse people, other veterinarians, riders, and track executives before fashioning what they say into concise feedback that will be directly related to the MRC and its own team of veterinarians.

“That will give some sort of public voice to people that are concerned,” Bowman said. “That will help out. But even more important is trying to get a process where we don't have to wait until we see the broken legs before we start recognizing problems, and that's some sort of an early warning system…

“I don't think this is the end of this process. I think it's the beginning of the process. But at least it will give horsemen a chance to express themselves and know it's going to go somewhere,” Bowman said.

MRC chairman Michael Algeo agreed: “This is a new beginning, as Tom said. Maybe a watershed moment. We're going to stay on this on a regular basis, because we can't allow [equine injuries or deaths] to continue to happen.”

The cluster of fatalities is the latest safety blow at Laurel. After years of freeze/thaw and drainage troubles, the main track was in such bad shape last spring that Laurel ceased racing Apr. 11 to begin an emergency overhaul, which involved a multi-million-dollar rebuild from the base up.

When racing resumed at Laurel Sept. 9, the main track had no apparent safety issues. But the onset of cold weather revealed problems with seams in the base of the homestretch, then the cushion atop that layer needed substantial reworking to give it more body and depth.

“There's been a huge, huge learning curve with this material and this track from when it was put in in July to right now,” said Chris Bosley, the MJC's track superintendent. “We know that we still have a long way to go. But we're working with every industry expert we possibly can [and] we're not going to stop until this thing is perfect. And once it is perfect, we're going to do everything that we can to keep it the same, to keep it perfect.”

Two among that team of consultants have firsthand knowledge of Laurel: John Passero, who used to be the MJC's track superintendent several decades ago, and Glen Kozak, who served in that same capacity in the mid-2000s before being hired by the New York Racing Association and eventually promoted to the senior vice president of operations and capital projects.

“This is a changed racetrack,” Passero said. “They're adding a more medium-coarse sand to give it some body. We're going back to a system that I used to use–plenty of depth. It seems to be very kind to horses. I look at it, and I look at the hoofprints, and I rode the tractors. I think we're definitely heading in the right direction [and] I think it can only get better.”

Added Kozak, “It's certainly trending in the right direction…. The products that are being used on the track are on-site, so this is something that can continue in getting this thing prepared for winter racing. It certainly is a different track than it was a week ago when I saw it, and it all seems like it's heading in the right direction.”

Tim Keefe, the president of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, said, “I think we're definitely in a much better place than we were.”

Jockey Xavier Perez said, “The difference on the surface of the track is 20 times better than what it was.”

Fellow rider Victor Carrasco concurred.

“I feel like the track is in great shape,” he said.

But Carrasco added that moving forward, it's the responsibility of jockeys and exercise riders to let trainers know if a horse has soundness issues or doesn't feel right instead of saying nothing and letting another person get on a potentially dangerous mount.

“It's not only the track,” Carrasco underscored.
