Laurel Cancels Again

Laurel Park cancelled live racing again Friday, Jan. 7, due to winter weather that disrupted the area and later added that racing would be cancelled through the weekend, according to a press release from the Maryland Jockey Club (MJC). A Monday snowstorm had resulted in the cancellation of training earlier in the week and the Maryland track also cancelled live racing Thursday. A fresh storm was sweeping through the area Thursday night and Friday morning, with Aqueduct also cancelling Friday's card.

Laurel will remain open for simulcasting, as will Pimlico, Rosecroft, and the MJC OTB Network.

Live racing at Laurel is scheduled to resume Saturday, Jan. 8, with first post at 12:25 p.m.

Laurel to Add Racing Days to Spring Meet

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Jockey Club announced the addition of racing days over the next several months to make up for multiple cancellations in the winter and early spring because of weather conditions and equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) restrictions.

MJC earlier announced that the Spring Stakes Spectacular program originally scheduled for Apr. 17 at Laurel Park has been moved to the following Apr. 24.

Racing will be held April 17-19 instead of Apr. 15-18. Extra races listed for Thursday, Apr. 15, will move to Saturday, Apr. 17, while the program slated for Friday, Apr. 16, has been moved to Monday, Apr. 19. The Laurel Park spring meet ends Sunday, May 2.

Only horses stabled at Laurel Park are eligible to enter and race through the end of the EHV-1 quarantine Apr. 17. The quarantine at Pimlico Race Course is scheduled to end Apr. 12.

Live racing had been scheduled for three days a week–Friday through Sunday—at Laurel Park in June and July. Seven Thursday programs have been added June 3, 10, 17 and 24; and July 1, 8 and 15. The summer meet concludes with racing on a Friday-through-Sunday schedule until Aug. 22.

Pimlico will race 15 days from May 5-31. The Laurel summer meet begins Thursday, June 3.

Laurel Cancels Weekend Due to EHV-1

Laurel Park has canceled racing for Friday, Saturday and Sunday after the Maryland Jockey Club was informed Thursday evening by Maryland State Veterinarian Dr. Michael Odian that a horse at Pimlico has tested positive for the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1).  The horse had been isolated for 72 hours prior to the positive test. The news comes from a press release from the MJC..
As a result of the positive test, and as a proactive measure to protect the horse population in the state of Maryland, horses currently stabled at Pimlico will not be allowed to ship to Laurel until a full quarantine is lifted at both properties. Previously, the two properties had been quarantined as one facility.  They will now be treated as two separate quarantine zones.
The news would have impacted fields for the races which were already set for this weekend, thus forcing the cancelation. The decision was made in conjunction with the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen, the release said.
“We extend our thanks the Maryland Racing Commission, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the horsemen at the Maryland Jockey Club and our fans for their cooperation and understanding during this difficult situation,” said the MJC.
