Gossip Girl: Chismosa Earns Graded Win in Las Flores

A week after a pair of California-breds battled to the wire in the GI La Brea S., the state-bred program was back in the spotlight again on Monday's holiday card at Santa Anita when Jaime Renella's Chismosa (Clubhouse Ride) capped a three-win day for her sire with a 1 1/4-length victory in the GIII Las Flores S. Sent off at 8-1, Chismosa settled just off the pace as favored Sweet Azteca (Sharp Azteca), making just her second career start, blitzed through a quarter in :21.96 and a half in :44.70 while chased by Hot Peppers (Khozan). The pacesetter drifted out badly into the stretch, allowing Chismosa to cut the corner and skip to the lead at the top of the lane. With a resurgent Hot Peppers to her inside and a determined Sweet Azteca to her outside, Chismosa refused to be beaten and was drawing away late.

“She is an amazing filly,” said Renella. “She's never had a clean trip in all of her races, and we finally got one today. Starting off the new year like this–there's more to come.”

Renella emigrated with his family to the U.S. from Ecuador when he was four, according to a recent profile by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Founder of Performance Tube Bending Inc., an Irwindale-based company specializing in creating customized intake/exhaust systems for automobiles, he claimed Chismosa's dam, You Can Dream (Cat Dreams), for $20,000 in 2010.   “She ran very game,” said winning jockey Kyle Frey. “As you saw, the favorite ducked out there at the top of the lane and I didn't want to lose a ton of ground by staying outside her, so I was able to cut inside, over heels and get to the inside. From there, she just kept grinding. Big effort.”

Winning trainer Rafael DeLeon added, “I thought Kyle made a good move. We talked in the paddock of how she is just one pace. If she picked up the bridle, she's ready to go. He felt right away the filly picked up the bridle and he was looking for room and he found a clear space inside the other horse. I'm happy he did that. I'm happy to win and I thank God for giving me the victory.”

Chismosa opened her career with three straight wins–including two stakes triumphs–versus state-bred foes at Del Mar in the summer of 2022, but she went to the sidelines following a score in the Generous Portion S. in September. She suffered her first loss when sixth on return in the May 6

GIII Senorita S. and, while her four on-the-board efforts in stakes company included a runner-up effort in the July 4 GII Great Lady M S., a series of troubled trips kept her out of the winner's circle in eight 2023 outings. She was most recently fifth in the Nov. 12 Betty Grable S.

“I gave her some time off because every morning I touch my horses and she didn't like when I touched her in a certain spot, so I sent her to my farm for a little while,” said DeLeon. “Once she came back, she came back to win.”

Pedigree Notes:
Chismosa is the third graded winner for Clubhouse Ride, who has also been represented by Warren's Showtime and Brickyard Ride.

You Can Dream, who was claimed by owner/breeder Jaime Renella for $20,000 in 2010, produced a colt by Acclamation in 2022 and a filly by that sire in 2023. The colt sold for $100,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearling Sale. The mare was bred back to Acclamation. The winner's third dam, Regal Band, produced GI Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos.

Champion Gamine Cruises To Easy Victory In Seasonal Debut In Las Flores

The champ is back.  Idle since winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland on Nov. 7, Bob Baffert-trained Gamine, in what amounted to a paid workout, broke alertly from her rail post and made every pole a winning one in taking Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Las Flores Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.  With regular rider John Velazquez up, she got six furlongs while well within herself in 1:09.52 and drawing off by five lengths.

“She came back so good,” said Velazquez, who rode Gamine in her final four starts of 2020.  “She felt as good as last year.  Bob thinks she's not ready yet, that's what he told me.  She does everything so effortlessly, it's just everything she does, makes my job a lot easier.  I just steer where I want to go and that's it.  That's the biggest point of her strength, I believe.”

With no place or show wagering, Gamine, who has now finished first across the wire in six of her seven career starts by a combined 38 ¼ lengths, was off at 1-20 and paid $2.10 to win, with no place and show wagering.

“I told Johnny before, 'With the one hole, make sure you don't let her make the gap (as the horses come out of the seven furlong chute onto the main track oval),” said Baffert.  “Ride her like she's 10-1.'  I'm happy for my owners and everybody involved.  They are excited, it's Easter Sunday, so it's a big win…

“They (the fans) saw one of the greatest fillies I've ever trained going one turn.  Hopefully, we'll stretch her out.”

Purchased for $1.8 million out of the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in Training Sale, Gamine, a 4-year-old filly by Into Mischief out of the Kafwain mare Peggy Jane, is owned by Michael Lund Petersen.  With the Las Flores purse of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $893,000.  With four graded stakes wins, three of them Grade I's, her official resume now reads five wins from seven starts, as she was disqualified from purse money earned in a first condition allowance win at Oaklawn Park on May 2, 2020.

Baffert's Qahira, who sat a joint second, about one length off the winner with Hang a Star and Biddy Duke leaving the half mile pole, proved second best under Flavien Prat as she finished 2 ¾ lengths in front of Biddy Duke.

Fractions on the race were 22.74, 45.77 and 57.54.

Champion Gamine Returns, Towers Over Field Of Four In Sunday’s Las Flores

Idle since winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Nov. 7 at Keeneland, Bob Baffert's brilliant 4-year-old filly Gamine towers over her competition going six furlongs in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Las Flores Stakes at Santa Anita.

Supplemented at a cost of $2,000, owner Michael Lund Petersen's Gamine will face three rival fillies and mares in what will be her first start at Santa Anita since she aired by 6 ¼ lengths in her 6 ½ furlong debut on March 7, 2020. A winner of both the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes going a one turn mile at Belmont Park on June 20 and the Grade 1 Test Stakes going seven furlongs at Saratoga Aug. 8, Gamine, who was purchased for $1.8 million at the Fasig Tipton Mid Atlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in May, 2019, has four wins from six starts with earnings of $883,000.

A disappointing third and subsequently disqualified to last in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks Sept. 4, Gamine and John Velazquez bounced back with a huge effort in a return to sprinting, as she sat second turning for home en route to a 6 ¼ length score as the even money favorite in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

With Velazquez set to ride for the fifth consecutive time, Gamine has been favored in all six of her starts—five of them as the odds-on choice. By Into Mischief out of Peggy Jane, by Kafwain, Gamine is a brilliant talent that will no doubt be pointed to the Breeders' Cup in November at Del Mar.

While Gamine lacks recency, her talented stablemate Qahira, who will be making her third start of the meet, does not and she is the clear-cut second choice. A winner of the 6 ½ furlong Kalookan Queen Stakes Jan. 10, she was subsequently third, beaten 4 ½ lengths by Baffert's Merneith in the Grade 2 Santa Monica going seven furlongs on Feb. 13.

Owned by Baoma Corporation, Qahira has been ridden in her last two starts by the now-departed Joel Rosario, so Flavien Prat has the call on Sunday. A close third going 6 ½ furlongs three starts back in the Grade 3 Chillingworth Stakes here on Sept. 25, Qahira, a 5-year-old mare by Cairo Prince out of the Bates Motel mare Motel Lass, has five wins from nine starts and she'll be seeking her first graded stakes win in the Las Flores.
