Pricey OBSMAR Grad a Second Stakes Winner for Unified

OBS March bullet breezer (:20.2) Roger McQueen (Unified) fended of all challengers Sunday to become the second stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}). Third as the favorite on debut at Churchill May 22–one slot behind GII Saratoga Special S. runner-up Gunite (Gun Runner)–the dark bay stepped forward to air by five lengths here July 17. Displaying ample zip once again to attend the pace through a :46.99 half, Roger McQueen took over approaching the stretch but was immediately tackled by Lucky Boss (Street Boss). He continued to stiff arm that foe in the lane, and even-money Costa Terra (Gun Runner) joined the fray late, but there was no wearing down Roger McQueen. The winner is the most recent registered produce for his now 13-year-old dam, who was a stakes winner at two herself in New York. Unified has also been represented this year in Kentucky by Debutante S. winner Behave Virginia.

One Timer Makes It Two In A Row In Victoria Stakes

One Timer, under E.T. Baird, made it two impressive wins in a row, this time in the $125,000 Victoria Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

After dismantling his rivals to the tune of 12 ½-lengths in his 5-furlong debut at Arlington Park on June 26, One Timer delivered another outstanding performance, overpowering his rivals in the 5 ½-furlong Tapeta event for 2-year-olds.

Sent off as the 3-5 choice, One Timer, trained by Larry Rivelli for owners Richard Ravin and Patricia's Hope LLC, engaged Feelthebeat on the front end as soon as the gates opened. The pair were well in front of their five rivals as they took the field through an opening quarter-mile in :22.11.

The two continued their front-end tussle, but Baird and the son of Trappe Shot found another gear as they straightened for home and then easily widened their advantage down the lane.

One Timer, five ahead at the stretch call, crossed the wire 3 ¾-lenghts ahead of Twenty Four Mamba. Concealed Carry was third and Summer Sunset rallied to secure fourth.

The final time was 1:03.33.

“He's still not really comfortable being in there [starting gate],” offered Baird. “I think that's going to come with time. He's anxious… he wants to go. He just doesn't have patience for standing still for very long.”

Although it was another decisive score on Saturday, the veteran rider wasn't feeling confident in the minutes leading up to the Victoria.

“To be honest, I wasn't feeling really good in the post parade because he was getting awfully shook up. But you have to take into consideration that he shipped up here, he's at a different racetrack and he's never seen it. That being said, I think he did a great job. He's a really, really nice horse. He's got a high cruising speed.”

One Timer, bred in Kentucky by St. Simon Place LLC, returned $3.20 to win. Mowins was scratched.

Unified Colt Graduates at Ellis Park

The 3-5 favorite battled on the front end through a quarter in :22.29, took command after a half in :45.76 and pulled away to score by five lengths. Back to Normal (Liam's Map) issued a midstretch challenge before settling for second. Roger McQueen is the second winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}). He was a $77,000 KEENOV weanling and $190,000 KEESEP yearling before selling for $530,000 following a :20 2/5 work at this year's OBS March sale. King Of Miami Wins Mystic Lake Derby On Record Wagering Night At Canterbury

King of Miami won the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby by a head over favorite T D Dance on Wednesday at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn. The Mystic Lake Derby was one of six stakes races on the 10-race Northern Stars Turf Festival program that attracted a record single day handle of $3,795,180 surpassing 2004's Claiming Crown single-day handle of $3,632,958.

King of Miami, a 3-year-old by American Pharoah, was ridden by Jareth Loveberry and trained by Larry Rivelli for owner Patricia's Hope, LLC. Loveberry, leading rider at Canterbury in 2017, had not ridden at the Shakopee racetrack since last summer. He used his experience over the turf course to find his way through traffic. “I'd ridden here enough, and I was waiting for a hole to open. I was like, 'Open, open, open!' and at last it opened,” he said. Final time for one mile on a firm turf course was 1:34.76. King of Miami paid $32.60.

$100,000 Curtis Sampson Oaks: Saranya (The Factor) won the one-mile turf stake, restricted to 3-year-old fillies, by a neck. She was ridden by Florent Geroux, trained by Brad Cox, and owned by Peachtree Stable. The favorite paid $3.40.

$100,000 Dark Star Turf Sprint: Jazzy Times (Discreetly Mine) won the five-furlong turf stake restricted to 3-year-olds and upwards by a head. He was ridden by Chad Lindsay, trained by Canterbury Park Hall of Famer David Van Winkle, and owned by Dennis F. Smith. When asked how winning this race felt, jockey Chad Lindsay had just one word, “Huge.” Jazzy Times paid $22.20.

$60,000 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes: Star of the North (The Hunk) won the 6 1/2-furlong stakes restricted to 3-year-olds who are the progeny of stallions whose service was sold at the 2017 MTA Stallion Auction. Star of the North won by 7 1/4 lengths . The prohibitive favorite was ridden by Ry Eikleberry, trained by Francisco Bravo, and owned by Michael Grossman. Star of the North paid $3.00.

$100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes: Evil Lyn (Wicked Strong) closed to win the Lady Canterbury by a length over Princess Causeway. She was ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., trained by Michael Maker, and owned by Paradise Farm Corp. (Peter Proscia) and David Staudacher.

$100,000 Mystic Lake Mile: Hieronymus (Girolamo) set a track record for one mile on the turf, winning the Mystic Lake Mile by a nose over pace setter Cinco Star in 1:32.93. He was ridden by Florent Geroux, trained by Brad Cox, and owned by Godolphin LLC. This was the second win of the day for Cox. The 4-year-old colt paid $9.00.
