$375,000 Mare In Foal To Fast Anna Leads Wednesday At Keeneland January Sale

Baccari Bloodstock paid $375,000 for From the Hood, a daughter of Street Sense in foal to Fast Anna, to lead results of Wednesday's third and penultimate session of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigned From the Hood, a 6-year-old half-sister to champion Folklore, stakes winner Divided Attention and stakes-placed Delightful Quality, dam of undefeated 2020 TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and G1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Essential Quality.

A total of 255 horses sold Wednesday for $4,378,300, for an average of $17,170 and a median of $7,000.

Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, was the session's leading consignor, selling 54 horses for $1,108,800. With its purchase of From the Hood, Baccari Bloodstock was the leading buyer.

Through three days, Keeneland sold 708 horses for $39,793,100, for an average of $56,205 and a median of $20,000.

Today's session marked the conclusion of the Spry Family Farm Dispersal for which Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency served as agent. The second high seller on Wednesday, purchased by WinStar Farm for $180,000, was the Spry mare Heavenly Sis. A half-sister to Grade 1 winner Instilled Regard, Heavenly Sis is a 5-year-old daughter of Hard Spun out of Enhancing, by Forestry. She is from the family of champion Heavenly Prize and Grade 1 winners Oh What a Windfall and Good Reward and Grade 2 winner Pure Prize.

Another Spry horse to sell Wednesday was Mo Emma, a 4-year-old broodmare prospect by Uncle Mo out of American Cleopatra, by Pioneerof the Nile, a full sister to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. She sold to Zilli Racing for $120,000.

A total of 41 Spry horses sold at the January Sale for $1,405,900, led by Sand Hill Stables' purchase of the Maclean's Music yearling colt Mac's Prize on Monday for $200,000.

On Wednesday, two daughters of Into Mischief – racing or broodmare prospect Risk Model and broodmare Ten Demerits – sold for $160,000 apiece.

Hidden Brook, agent, purchased Risk Model, a 4-year-old filly consigned by ELiTE, agent. A half-sister to stakes winner Hi Holiday, she is out of the graded stakes-placed Proud Citizen mare Boleyn and from the family of Grade 1 winner Magnificent Lindy.

Trackside Farm acquired Ten Demerits, a 6-year-old daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Pussycat Doll, by Real Quiet, in foal to Girvin. Hunter Valley Farm, agent, consigned Ten Demerits, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Aquaphobia from the family of additional Grade 1 winners Hookedonthefeelin and Jimmy Creed.

At $70,000, the session-topping yearling was a colt by Laoban purchased by Rascal Bloodstock. Consigned by Bill Murphy, agent, he is out of Jade, a daughter of Colonel John and from the family of Grade 1 winner Play Fellow.

The January Sale concludes Thursday with a session beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The session includes 19 broodmares, yearlings and horses of racing age consigned by Lane's End, agent for the Complete Dispersal of the Estate of Paul P. Pompa Jr.

‘Eager To Go’: Derby Hopeful Keepmeinmind Arrives At Oaklawn Park

After traveling Sunday and resting Monday, Tuesday was a work day for one of the country's top 2-year-olds of 2020.

Keepmeinmind galloped approximately a mile under regular exercise rider Saul Salas on a cloudy, cold Tuesday morning at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. It was the colt's first trip to the track at a racing venue since breaking his maiden in the $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) Nov. 28 at Churchill Downs.

Keepmeinmind arrived Sunday night in Hot Springs after previously being based at WinStar Farm in Kentucky, where he had been in light training since a last-to-first victory in the Grade 2Kentucky Jockey Club, a 1 1/16-mile event that anchored Churchill's Stars of Tomorrow II program.

“He seemed all eager to go,” trainer Robertino Diodoro said after Keepmeinmind returned to the barn. “It was good to have him back in the barn. One step at a time.”

Diodoro reiterated there is no timetable regarding Keepmeinmind's 3-year-old debut, or even a regular workout schedule.

Oaklawn's first of four Kentucky Derby points races is the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 22, but Diodoro said Keepmeinmind is not a candidate for the 1-mile race. A late-running son of Laoban, Keepmeinmind raced four times this year (all routes), finishing second in the $400,000 Breeders' Futurity (G1) Oct. 3 at Keeneland and third in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Nov. 6 at Keeneland before his breakthrough victory as the 2-1 favorite in the Kentucky Jockey Club. His last three starts have been at 1 1/16 miles. Oaklawn's Kentucky Derby points series continues with the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 15.

“Nothing set in stone,” Diodoro said. “Like the old saying: 'Let the horse tell us when he's ready to do something.' ”

David Cohen, Oaklawn's leading jockey in 2019, has ridden Keepmeinmind three times, including his victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club. Silver Prospector won the 2019 Kentucky Jockey Club before finishing fourth in the Smarty Jones – his 3-year-old debut – and then capturing the Southwest.

‘One Step At A Time’: Derby Hopeful Keepmeinmind Heads To Oaklawn, Will Aim For Southwest Stakes

Keepmeinmind, among the country's leading 2-year-olds, is scheduled to arrive at Oaklawn between Christmas Day and New Year's Day to begin preparations for a 2021 campaign, the colt's trainer, Robertino Diodoro, said Saturday morning.

Diodoro said Keepmeinmind has been in light training at WinStar Farm in Kentucky since breaking his maiden in the $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) Nov. 28 at Churchill Downs. The trainer said he hasn't mapped out an early 2021 race schedule for Keepmeinmind, but he likely isn't a candidate for the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 22, a one-mile opening-day event that is Oaklawn's first of four Kentucky Derby points races.

“Probably too short for him, especially with the mile here,” Diodoro said. “It's a short lane and stuff.”

Oaklawn's mile races begin and end at the sixteenth pole in the stretch. Diodoro said Keepmeinmind will be considered for the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 15 at Oaklawn. Keepmeinmind has already banked 18 points to rank second on the early Kentucky Derby leaderboard, and the goal, Diodoro said, is a return to Churchill Downs this spring for the first leg of the Triple Crown. The colt also ran second at Churchill Downs in his Sept. 2 career debut.

“Just one step at a time,” Diodoro said. “It's easier said than done, keeping these horses happy and healthy. It's the same with all horses, but, obviously, our long-term plan is, hopefully, live the dream of being at Churchill in May. But that's a ways out. I won't say anything. Let the horse tell us. We're not going to force anything. He came back really good out of his race and is doing well at WinStar, so we'll just play it by ear.”

Diodoro said Dreamer's Disease, who finished sixth in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, is scheduled to arrive at Oaklawn in early January. Dreamer's Disease, also by Laoban, closed his 2-year-old campaign with a seventh-place finish as the heavy favorite in the $250,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes Dec. 6 at Aqueduct after stumbling badly at the start.

Diodoro, who has never had a Triple Crown starter, already has horses training at Oaklawn.

As we approach the end of the calendar, we turn our attention to the incoming sire class of 2021. We asked several judges who their favorite incoming sire is for next year and if there are any other stallions, new or otherwise, that have caught their eye as under-the-radar picks

ADRIAN REGAN, Hunter Valley Farm

War of Will (War Front), $25,000, Claiborne Farm

I hate singling just one, but War of Will made a lot of sense for me. I was very impressed with his physical appearance when we went to see him at the farm. With his performance on the track, he was pretty durable on both dirt and turf which I’m a big fan of. There’s not too many horses like that.

Complexity (Maclean’s Music), $12,500, Airdrie Stud

For under-the-radar incoming stallions, I was very impressed with Complexity. I thought he was a super physical. He’s got a beautiful frame and is an athletic, correct horse. He also was able to carry his speed on the track, which was a big plus. I thought he was good value.

Caravaggio (Scat Daddy, $25,000, Ashford Stud) and Laoban (Uncle Mo, $25,000, WinStar Farm) also both impressed me when seeing them for the first time. I thought they were both very good physicals.
